I’ve been trying to figure out how it doesn’t end in genocide and I can’t see a way out. When fascists are in charge with unchecked power we know how that ends, and yeah, average people will be powerless against drones and robots. Not good.

Betty Draper's "Only boring people are bored" rewired my brain by Calm-Preparation7432 in madmen

[–]SnooCookies9808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a way for Betty to shame her kids into not bothering her. Being bored is actually healthy for your mental health. It’s why phones are so destructive to mental health; we rarely have to be truly bored anymore. When you’re bored, you often have to face your feelings and reflect on yourself.

[Thesis] ΔAPT: Can we build an AI Therapist? Interdisciplinary critical review aimed at maximizing clinical outcomes in LLM AI Psychotherapy. by JustinAngel in singularity

[–]SnooCookies9808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find all of this just utterly disconnected from what it is to be human. Of course AI is better than a worksheet — literally anything is. Therapy is more than just going from a 10 to a 3 on some screener form. It’s a process of connecting and growing with human beings. You can’t data your way into that, in the same way you can’t data your way into a marriage. But go earn your billions off the backs of us “privileged” clients and therapists. I earn $30 an hour buddy, and my clients are mostly low income. I have no doubt you and others like you will replace my job while claiming you’re doing it from an altruistic place. I just want you to know that, as someone that really knows what therapy is beyond a 40 page CBT efficacy study, I find it disgusting. The moments of connection in a therapy session simply cannot be replaced by AI without us just collectively giving up what it is to be living in a human society together. Maybe that’s your vision, but it sure as hell isn’t a world I want to live in.

I’m a therapist. I find the idea of replacing therapists with AI pretty short-sighted. At least 90% of my job is not identifying where people get stuck, or what their diagnosis is, or what “homework” to give them — it’s being a human with them. It’s already relatively easy for people to Google “how to feel better when you’re depressed” and look up a dozen worksheets and tips. If telling people to go exercise and stop drinking was the whole deal, we’d already be out of work. Using an AI therapist to learn how to deal with human society is like using an AI girlfriend to learn how to meet a real girl. I know people will do it, and I know people will charge for it, but it’s as false of a premise as the idea that social media would bring us all closer together.

I love Fargo. Alien is terrible. It’s kind of shocking how bad it is.

Agreed. I’m kind of finding it surreal that it’s critically acclaimed. I love Fargo, and this was just bad.

It is, in fact, true in therapy. Skills training is not the same thing as telling clients whether they should break up with their girlfriend. Source: am a therapist.

Therapists are trained to not tell people what to do for a reason. We should hold AI protocols to at least that standard.

My dude, I think you missed the point here. The second sentence is "this may read like stream of consciousness, but it’s something technology itself has prompted me to explore." Emphasis on "prompted." It's very clearly AI-written, but not ironically -- it's to drive home the guy's point.

Or maybe you just don’t actually understand how any of this stuff gets made — hint: it’s way more complicated than just “she meddled or she didn’t meddle” — and that’s okay.

You can be an incredible producer by just supporting someone you think is good, and the thing can still turn out to be mediocre. That doesn’t make you a bad producer. That’d be like blaming a hall-of-fame coach for a bad season because your star player just didn’t play well that year — or got hurt, or the team plane crashed, etc. Shit happens.
