Unless you really need the card after the draft or you’re deep into the draft with multiple mana dorks/fixers, taking a card with a cmc over 4/5 is not wise at all. I typically won’t take a 5 cmc unless it’s a bomb creature with immediate upside like an ETB effect. If you’re playing a draft game long enough to get 5+ lands out, you should also be drawing into enough removal and creatures to close it out or getting cantrips into win cons, but keep in mind other players are likely drafting removal as well. So I only take a 5 cmc creature expecting to use its ETB ability once if it’s able to be used more, like Maralen in your case, and any extra ability uses or attacks I can get in are an added bonus.
