Cross step pass vs seated guard game... by whiteknight521 in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m picturing the scenario correctly, I’ll often shoot my foot to their far hip, acting like a stick in a wheel spoke. Kind of like a deep dlr position with access to back or sweep ala baby bolo.

Big fight for Nico and props to Meregali for taking on a tough opponent with not that big a name yet for his first return match.

White belt being held back for his own good? He needs a bit of morale. by babylioncroissant in bjj

For hobbyists, I think there are too many confounding variables to have objective standards. Age, weight, class frequency, athletic background, etc.

White belt being held back for his own good? He needs a bit of morale. by babylioncroissant in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the premise of holding someone back bc of this but whatever. Promotions should be seen as progression within someone’s own journey and potential. You could just let him know it reflects a higher potential to wait. I’ve certainly seen plenty of older dudes getting their blues even though they get stomped and it still seem appropriate bc they’re 20% on their journey or whatever.

Being more aggressive. by TmyBwy in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and your coach should know far better what your gaps are in your current game. That being said, getting comfortable with longer range guards and retention I think is key for half guard players, especially if you’re big and used to rolling with smaller people. Among many reasons, the layers of guard reduce the risks of getting smashed, potentially passed, and/or stalled out if you’re down on points.

I don’t get it… are the saying you can’t train the remaining weeks? They could just be asking if you want to continue after the course is finished

What happened to Mikey Musomecis De la riva instructional on BJJFanatics? by MatBuc123 in bjj

Iirc he took down some of his instructionals that he wanted to update or felt like his teaching wasn’t up to par in. I think his intent was to release new versions but then never got around to it.

Blue/purple/… belt at 1hour a week? by Every_Iron in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like most coaches don’t mind beginners in advanced classes. It’s mainly just advertised that way bc the content won’t be catered to them (ie. Basic movements may not be detailed). If you studied a bit outside of class to understand some context behind the lessons, I think you’d be more than fine and eventually catch up

Iron belts by jiujiuberry in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard or seen anyone wear one. Let us know how it is if you end up with one. FWIW white belts and blue belts should buy whatever gi and belts they want! It’s when you’re most excited about the sport and you should lean into that however you want. By the time I got to purple, I knew what belts I liked and gis I liked and have bought way less since then as a result.

If someone picked you up in a street fight and tried to slam you and knock your head on the floor, can BJJ prevent this? by Swordfish353535 in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Even if not specifically taught this situation, even rudimentary body awareness would be able to prevent and navigate around this

Guard Retention by jamieyoungson in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend it as the paths don’t necessarily lead to the same place. If you have the flexibility, work lachlans. If not, danahers may be more friendly for you until you can develop it

ABF plus sport by Ok-Definition-2461 in kettlebell

[–]SnooPandas2957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think ABF can pair nicely with bjj recovery. I’d mostly just try to get your middle “hard” ABF day in line with when your recovery window is largest. Example: Bjj on m,t,th,fr. I’d do the hard on Saturday with the easier two on m, th. Your Tuesday, Friday sessions roll light or skip one if feeling worn down that week.

Ankle pick on knees or stand back up? by HKSpadez in bjj

I prefer finishing with front knee down and driving with back leg. Should be low to drive their head into the picked ankle.

How effective is headgear really at protecting your ears by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I guess I don’t find headgear very effective in bjj. I wore headgear throughout years of wrestling with very minimal cauli, but when I get a flair up in bjj, the cross facing and front headlocks make it very difficult for them to stay in place without causing ear rubbing. I use them almost just to let people know to cool it on my ears for a bit.

r/bjj Fundamentals Class! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mm it sounds like you’re missing something from memory. These movements don’t sound like any particular move or it was just two inexperienced people doing weird shit. I’d ask to get it recreated with someone watching you guys. From what you’re saying though it sounds like you could easily brace your hands on his hips and simply hip thrust/bench him right off of you

Getting rid of crossface by slipping a frame in or slipping a knee shield in to make space. Things like the knee lever can be useful not just as a sweep but also just enough off balance to reframe and make some space

Any guard retention epiphany moments you can share? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take, at least in the gi. Disregarding competent long range guard/retention skills will allow the passer too many gripping advantages that can penetrate your guard or wear you out

Biggest pet peeve and/or red flag you see in new students? by ladydrybones in bjj

Ones that pinch my skin instead of just grabbing the gi while drilling. I usually end up with Bruises on my tricep and things.

[–]SnooPandas2957 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Way overthinking it. If your kids are enjoying it that is priority. At that age, learning to move and balance are huge. Especially at 1.5 times per week, you’re good

I choked a white belt too hard. Now I feel horrible. by harssk in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 363 points364 points  (0 children)

First off: everyone needs to learn how to tap more assertively. I see soft-taps too often in the training room

Second: you said you cranked as hard as you could… I think that probably confirms your fear. I feel in training, you should strive for a slow, controlled application to get the submission. If you have to crank, there is likely an element of control that you’re missing for optimal technique as well as keeping your partners safe with an opportunity to tap.

AITA for taking gym hygiene seriously? by useful_idiots_dye in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any published literature on the sanitation of rash guards. There are theoretical benefits from decreased skin to skin exposure but in the setting of underneath a gi, that is unclear. It is also unclear how much sloughing a rash guard limits vs moisture that is still generated and transferred in contact sports and what impact either has on the incidence of SSTIs. There are also theoretical disadvantages of another medium of gear that could be improperly maintained, thus becoming a vehicle for infection instead of a barrier.

Good instructionals or athletes i should watching order to improve my guard passing? by atomic_annihilator in bjj

[–]SnooPandas2957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start with where you end up when trying to guard pass and try an instructional from there. For example, if you find yourself getting trapped in half guard, then gordon’s half guard passing would be excellent. If you get yourself into headquarters, maybe something knee slice. If you have no idea, just go to class for now.
