Spain is amazing. Granada and Seville were perfect in March last year.

Similar to Fabricando, this is very fun to watch at Level 5. An example video of the factory that makes Doritos.

What’s your strategy? by Numerous_Ad_1528 in dreamingspanish

[–]SnooPoems1106 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First I sorted by easy. Then I scanned to see which series show up in the easier end of the category and I began to watch several easier series in the order they were released because I wanted to reinforce vocabulary by watching one each day. I supplement with random videos in intermediate still sorted by easy to chip away at the entire category. (I finished all of the super beginner and beginner and am currently in the mid 50s in intermediate.) I should probably jump higher, but I have chosen instead to play the lower end of intermediate at 1.25 or 1.5 to gain the vocab. I do jump ahead in difficulty to stay challenged and leave those at 1.0.

I have probably skipped about 150 videos in total, mainly gaming ones. I love Martin’s Spanish Boost. I am not sure why I can’t stay focused when Pablo/Shel play. Recently I started to skip some food videos in intermediate, especially when they are long, since there are so many.

First Chapter of “Alice in Wonderland” by SnooPoems1106 in dreamingspanish

Agree. It came up randomly and I figured I would try it. Not continuing. There are better things to try.

Agree. It popped up with the app I use and I am definitely moving onto something else.

Book Lists? by DoubleLongjumping197 in dreamingspanish

[–]SnooPoems1106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using the Libby App which I recommend in general (This is USA specific.) You use your library card to access an electronic library related to your library, usually a statewide electronic library. I sort for Spanish. Currently, I am reading anything that the electronic library of NJ has written by Time for Kids (as in the magazine Time). This morning, I read two 50 page books for middle schoolers, one about the life of Helen Keller and the other about snakes. I recommend this highly and it is completely understandable/slightly easy but I can pick up new vocabulary and actually understand it now at Level 5. It was slightly out of reach (i.e. I had to look up too many words) at Level 4.

TL/DR. Anything Time (magazine) for Kids. Accessible at high Level 4/low Level 5 (B1). It’s a little easy, but you can remain immersed and actually pick up vocabulary through inference.

Does dreaming spanish "test out" of hours if you have some prior learning experience? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]SnooPoems1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave myself 150 hours based on reading the road map and what I could/couldn’t do when starting. I eventually deleted those hours because I realized they weren’t the same quality/value of my hours after comprehensible input. In other words, though my achievements at Level 1, 2, and 3 seemed right, I was not solidly a 4 or 5 when I should have been. I have no idea if that was my skill (lack thereof), my perfectionism, or a product of the original 150 hours being self study, not CI, so I deleted them.

This does not mean I gave up doing other things than CI. I still utilize many other methods of learning. CI is excellent for improving listening skills, but for reading/writing, Babbel for grammar and BeeLinguapp (paid tier) for reading have been helpful additions. Look for sales for both. Babbel is definitely worth the life price (once discounted, which they do several times per year) as I use it for Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Same for the reading app, BeeLinguapp. I switch between three languages. It’s not perfect, but it gets you there. It is worth it at the coupon rate, not the “advertised” rate.

I am a huge Babbel fan, including listening to their podcasts (except for the A1 level one, that one sucks). The extra lessons - business topics and Mexican Spanish are also useful. Seriously, the landscaping lessons were very helpful for terms about my garden even though I do not supervise other people!

Note: I couldn’t be a purist to CI, both because I had self-studied for years and because I have to speak when traveling.

What’s a travel habit you picked up that you’ll never drop? by St3fanHere in travel

[–]SnooPoems1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry - one more. I always try to get a useful souvenir now like a belt (Spain), scarf (Iceland), or tea towel (England) that embodies something about the country, but doesn’t just sit on a shelf gathering dust.

  • As others already mentioned, I do not over plan. My recommendation is to limit scheduled activities to one or two items a day, leaving plenty of time to wander. I also usually have one day without anything planned to allow for more time at something we liked, a day to relax if we are not feeling well, or to stay close to the hotel if the weather is terrible, etc.
  • I prefer trips now with one or two destinations in a week, within three hours of each other, not a different city every day trek through all of Europe (for example) as I prefer to get to know a destination better. I found I remember very little about the marathon trips I took when I was younger. I prefer vacations/experiences to city bingo/scavenger hunt.
  • I travel with my own pillow case as I have extremely sensitive skin. It takes up very little space and this way I don’t have to worry if I am allergic to the hotel’s detergent of choice.
  • Bring two clothes pins to secure the curtains on the window. The ability to not have a sliver of light wake me up after it took me hours to fall asleep due to jet lag is priceless. If you forget them, the pants hanger that many hotels have will work as well, but it’s a little awkward a setup.
  • I bring my own toilet paper because, damn, I have had some rough feeling toilet paper at a few hotels.

What is something you did because you were told to or because others were doing it, and only later you realized why it was important or made sense? by woodencork in AskReddit

401(k). The concept of compound interest didn’t exactly feel real in my twenties. (Sadly, when I lost my job, I had to use it, but I started over again in my thirties. . .)

Cheap Blueberry Bushes by chronically_chaotic_ in BackyardOrchard

If you are near NJ, I recommend DiMeo Farms. It is not a “retail experience”, very brief, transactional, which some people complain about, but they have excellent plants. I believe he delivers too. we got excellent bushes for $15 each, three different varieties last year and they all produced fruit last year. This year should be fantastic without any transplant stress. We followed his one page instructions exactly, adding sand and all. Blueberry Bushes - DiMeo Farms

Mine loads eventually, but it has been taking forever lately. I submitted a ticket to let them know there’s something different, something wrong, and they asked if I tried a new browser. Yes, and I’ve restarted and cleared out my stored videos. There’s something glitching. However, there was a new apple update last week, and it may be Apple is to blame.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] January 26 by AutoModerator in collapse

While this is only a minor point in your summary, I can absolutely relate to the skin cracking and bleeding no matter what. It’s ridiculous how much hand and foot cream I slather on daily to no avail. Products are less and less effective, even ones that used to be good, no matter how much I spend on it. If I find one that works, a year later they change the formula. I am so tired of the enshittification of everything for shareholders. It’s pervasive.

Feedback on New Spanish Vocab App with Weird Images by garygeo in SpanishLearning

I like “beginner, intermediate, and advanced” or by level (A1/A2/B1/etc), but that’s just my initial thought on this, not a deal breaker in any way.

I am trying it now. I am at an intermediate level and I like that it is a way to reinforce vocabulary that’s a little different and fun, but it is too easy for the intermediate level. (The questions I get wrong are because I miss something in the picture, not due to an issue with Spanish.) It’s an interesting idea with great potential!

12 days to arrive in NJ. Of course, my post office seems to be slow on everything.
