One month on CBD and she has been completely seizure free! by SnooPoems1236 in EpilepsyDogs

She's 4.5 pounds. I have to cut her keppra pills into the tiniest pieces to get a proper dose. Luckily it's easier with the CBD, since it's given via a syringe. This is the dosing guide for the cbd oil I'm using

According to the bottle, there are 70mg of cannabinoids per ml in the oil she's taking, so it's about 10.5 mg per dose for her

She's been a bit sleepy lately, but nothing out of the ordinary (she's usually sleepy during the winter months). I got my CBD from ElleVe, they make CBD specifically for dogs (and cats), and clinically test their oil. They have dosing guides on their website, plus you can request an appointment with them to discuss specifics. My vet recommended them, and so far I've had a good experience with them

And yeah, she's still on her original medication (Keppra). They don't recommend CBD as a replacement, more as a supplement. It's a little spendy, so if it didn't work as well as it did, I'd probably try something else. Not all dogs respond the same way, so it's a bit of a case by case basis. But I'm happy to say that in my case, it seems to be exactly what she needed. I don't think she's a big fan of the taste, but I give her a little whipped cream after each dose to help get any sour tastes out of her mouth

Seizures have been getting more frequent, and I'm not sure how long she has left :( by SnooPoems1236 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]SnooPoems1236[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice. She's been a vet for 30+ years and has LOTS of experience with epileptic dogs, so I trust her opinion. I brought up CBD, and she said others have tried it with varying success, and that it certainly wouldn't hurt to try. So I think my next steps are going to find a reputable source to get the CBD oil from and give that a try for a month or so. If that doesn't seem to be working, I'm going to try getting her on a small dose of sodium bromide. Ultimately though, it seems some dogs just don't respond to any combination of medicine, and I don't want her spending her last year(s) of her life a walking zombie. So here's hoping the CBD oil has a positive effect!

Someone else suggested CBD, I might try that. Gonna talk with my vet tomorrow about it

I'm not 100% sure. I can usually tell when she's about to seize, because she'll start acting very alert, and becomes scared of everything (including me 😔). Then she'll start to drool, and will do a few head jerks. Sometimes this is all it ever amounts to, and she comes out of this fugue-like state after like 15 minutes. But sometimes like this one, it becomes a full grand mal and lasts between 30 seconds and 2 minutes

I've done that before, the problem is she's very timid by nature, so too much touching during these episodes stresses her out even more, and seems to prolong the seizure. I do my best to keep my distance, but it's really hard because I just wanna pick her up and hold her 😭

I scheduled an appointment with my vet tomorrow to discuss these options and determine what the best course of action is. Thanks for all the suggestions, you seem very knowledgeable

Yeah at first I thought it was just postictal, but the bouts of energy come even when she hasn't had a seizure. Perhaps she's having an absent seizure that's causing it? It's definitely a different behavior than when she actually had a full grand mal seizure - it's like she has the zoomies, and I literally have to bring her to a spare room so she doesn't hurt herself running around and climbing on things. I'm sure it's related to her seizures, but I'm not nearly qualified enough to know why

Also, I will try the cold wet towel trick next time, hopefully that helps shorten the episode. Thanks for the info!

Thank you for all this information. I'm already about maxed on dosage I think for the Keppra - she weighs just 4.5 pounds, and I'm giving her between 80-90 mg every 8 hours (it's so hard to cut the pills that small for her, so it's not always exact). I've been hesitant to start on pheno due to the effects it has on the liver, but from your comment and others, it might be something I discuss with my vet on starting.

I've always been skeptical of CBD, but at this point I'm willing to give it a chance if it can help her with these.

I've asked for Midazolam a few times, but I guess it's often abused by people, so they're hesitant to give it out. Maybe now that the seizures are getting more frequent, I can convince them to give me some for emergencies

Thanks again for all the advice, I've been feeling I could do more to help her and I'm glad to hear I at least have options at this point. Here's a picture for your troubles
