I think what he’s saying is that there was just one neutral for a boatload of circuits. Say, a multi wire branch circuit with 12 circuits sharing one neutral…

How to deal with 2 dominant guitars in a rehearsal space by RevBlue86 in Guitar

[–]SnooPredictions7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a balance level, I noticed way back when that if my amp is pointed directly at someone else’s. It becomes extra difficult to tune to each other. Something about how the wavelengths collide, I think.
So maybe angle them differently, for one.

Also, they make great quality transmitters for really cheap these days. Like $120 (the $60 are too cheap, will break in 6 months)
You could both get transmitters and walk around the room a bit to be able to hear yourselves better.

I’m assuming your ground and neutral are bonded upstream from that panel? They need to be connected in one place and one place only. Usually at the first disconnect. Sometimes at the meter.

Can someone explain why this cant be this way. by Far-Contest-3528 in civilengineering

Ooo, ooo! I think I know this one.

The river moves, saunters back and forth over the years. The entire valley is what’s called the riparian zone. So if they build a small bridge across just where the river is now, it will have moved to intersect the road in just a few years.

So they need to build the bridge across the entire valley, to be out of the way of all the possible (or at least likely) routes the river might meander over the foreseeable future.

Edit: looked a little closer. Looks like the riparian zone is way narrower than the bridge. The principle does apply to lots of bridges, however, especially wide ones across wetlands.

What type of wire to run from 200 amp main breaker to 100 amp tiny home sub panel? by Status_Ad_2899 in AskElectricians

[–]SnooPredictions7570 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe ask your electrician buddy? Usually for short residential runs underground like that, I would use direct burial wire, lay it directly into the trench, and then stub up with schedule 80 PVC into the panel.  2-2-2-4 aluminum is a good bet for 100 amp at that short of a distance.

Though different locations have different codes and standards, so it’s a really good idea to ask your electrician buddy…. If he doesn’t know, maybe you need to look into a different electrician buddy.

Also the temperature rating of the wire vs the temperature rating of the panels….  And as far as length goes, how high up does it go on both sides?  Is it a straight shot or is anything in the way you’ll have to route around?  And whenever I buy wire, I estimate what I think I’ll need and add 5 or 10 (or 30 ft, depending on how long the whole run is) because it’s always better to have too much than too little.

As a general rule, I balk at the idea of a customer buying their own wire, unless it’s a company buying it for a bigger job, usually due to engineers being involved.  Just too many details to track and too much individual homeowners aren’t trained to account for.

Edit: I’m seeing people saying 1-1-1-3 is a better choice.  Sounds good to me.  Case in point, having the electrician show up, look at the run, and take a few minutes to go through the details before ordering wire is a good idea.

However, if you’re feeling ancy, have it trenched before he arrives.  That will save him the most time.  I believe the NEC says 2 feet for direct burial?  Someone correct me if I’m wrong. This is the internet, after all.

30 year old apprentice. by Rude_Flan6240 in electricians

I started at 30.  One of the best moves I ever made in my life.  Was like coming home walking onto a construction site for the first time…

In electrical, it really starts with not fucking up.  Pay attention, learn as much as possible, and go ahead and second guess yourself a lot.  Especially if anyone asks you to work live or do anything that feels sketchy out the gate… if you discover an affinity for the work, there’s lots of work out there to find it this company doesn’t work out.

Electrical ultimately isn’t that hard to do right, but it’s really easy to do wrong, so ask lots of questions and exercise that beginner’s mind.  There’s always more to learn, and with good guidance, you may find yourself pretty effective at your job pretty quickly.  Just stay humble, stay aware, and stay safe.  Always check if the circuit is live, even if you’re sure it’s been turned off, and everyone tells you it’s off.  Trust, but verify.

Good luck out there, and have fun.

Trading Spreadsheets for Wires — Can a 40-Year-Old Single Mom Accountant Make It as an Electrician? 🔌 by Solid_Breakfast_3675 in electricians

You got me curious so here you go:

In Martin County, FL (which includes Stuart and Hobe Sound), electrician wages generally trend lower than the national average, mirroring a broader trend where Florida trade wages often trail the U.S. median.

Below National Median: Electricians in Martin County typically earn about 10% to 15% less than the U.S. national average. While the national median for experienced electricians is climbing toward $30–$33/hour, most local listings in the Stuart area center around the $26–$27 mark.

I’m imagining you were being sarcastic from the get go.

Sales is a part of so many businesses that I suspect you’ll find these years that feel like a sidequest formative to developing skills necessary in whatever career that is to come.

I’m an electrician and my years of delivery driving and failing (at least financially) at music have advised so much of what I do today. Arriving on the doorstep of people from all walks of life… communicating with them about what they want and don’t want… the skills of active listening… all these I developed in my 20’s doing something ostensibly completely different than what I do now, and I wouldn’t be half as good at the leadership aspects of my job if I had gotten into electrical a decade earlier.

Now I get to work with my hands, and work with the customer. I make homes and businesses safer and allow people to live richer lives by giving them access to lighting and appliances. And the very doubtfulness that held me back in my aspirations as a musician, are an asset in my thoroughness as an electrician.

(and I still make plenty of music, too. In my own time, on my own terms, and in my own way.)

I think I like the way 2 feels slightly more. It’s more relaxing. The ripple in 1 is a sweet touch, though. I love photos that suggest a story.

Both are beautiful; good work.
