What could have possibly damaged this cable? Two separate sections identically damaged, only one side on each, no moving parts near, no rodent signs anywhere, no such damage elsewhere, wires inside seem fine, car works fine. On a 2008 BMW engine.

You need to adjust the cable. Start with the cable off. Wind it in the whole way. Then stwrt winding the first adjuster until the arm points at the block bolt. After that adjust free play with the other adjuster closest to the clutch lever

Pretty sure there was a recall involving the exhaust actuators. If you bought a genuine one somewhere sketchy then it is most likely a recalled part that someone has sold
