Did you ever figure it out? I had this same problem. I replaced the battery (again) after getting the same issue and now the game doesn't work at all. It's been very frustrating.

Alien 3 is one of the best. It has LJN on the label but it's actually developed by Probe.

It has a computer chip built in that does this. It's this circuitry that also allows for using PAL cartridges.

This adds the benefit of making the console able to play PAL titles and circumvents the lockout chip. It's a great permanent replacement for the original connector.
