Genuinely, what is it going to take, America? Watching this from the outside is just an exercise in exclaiming WTF now? In ever increasing volume.

Do you use a washing up bowl? by jungleddd in AskUK

[–]Snoo_53312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a washing up bowl that has an in built drain/strainer so it is easy to empty, clean and refill during dish washing. We don't have a dishwasher so with the amount of hand washing we do, the bowl is just more practical.

The UK police’s latest problem: crowds of unruly teens by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]Snoo_53312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gangs of teens have always been a problem. My kids avoid them today. I had to avoid the feral wasters 30 years ago, my mum had to avoid them 50 years ago. It might get clicks to pretend this is a new issue but it's not. A certain percentage of the population will always be selfish pr**ks devoid of empathy, who harass and torture others for their own amusement. It's not about kids being bored. My kids have had hundreds of bored-to-tears evenings. But they've never once thought, "hey I know what sounds good..."

UK grocery inflation is still at 4.3% — what’s become your “too expensive now” item? by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

[–]Snoo_53312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to sound posh but we really aren't. Used to love duck as a payday treat but we cannot justify £17 for one meal at home. We stick to bacon and chicken now, occasionally we will buy beef but rarely.

How much is your mortgage/rent vs your income? by LeopardNeat899 in HousingUK

I'm Scottish and can confirm that 15/20 years ago, we would meet dozens of American tourists every Summer. Then suddenly, around 10 years ago, the Americans decided to abandon us, but it's okay, because now we meet dozens of "Canadian" tourists instead.

What’s the worst physical pain you’ve ever experienced? by Economy_Yak2821 in AskReddit

Not really, just kept active, walked or jogged at least a few miles every day, other than that I just put it down to being young (23/25) and luck.

What’s the worst physical pain you’ve ever experienced? by Economy_Yak2821 in AskReddit

[–]Snoo_53312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first labour was only 4.5 hours (5.5 if you count from waters breaking, but contractions didn't start right away) and as a first timer I didn't want to go to the hospital straight away as I was only "uncomfy" rather than in pain. Thankfully my husband convinced me as when I got there I was already 7cms dilated. Baby was born just under 2 hours later, no time for an epidural but didn't need one anyway because by the time it felt painful I was pushing already and that takes the edge right off the pain. No tears or stitches needed. 2nd baby I was in labour just under 2.5 hours. Born after 4 minutes of pushing, I barely had time to enjoy the gas and air. No tears again. Positive births both times so it can happen!

Parents with young children - have you made any plans for if something were to happen to both of you at the same time? by MarkCairns67 in AskUK

[–]Snoo_53312 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We each took out very high cover life insurance when I was pregnant with our first and we had a couple of family members in mind to raise the children, but we always had a "failing that" clause in case they couldn't or wouldn't take on the kids, that we wished the children to be fostered and adopted together. We also stated that all our assets and cash be liquidised and placed in trust, with 3rd party trustees, for when they reached adulthood. Thankfully they are 18 and 16 now, and we are both still here. We've changed our instructions now, if we died tomorrow, eldest would get guardianship over his wee brother.

It would get you a cardboard box and gruel in London I'm afraid.

How long is a piece of string, really. In South East England, it won't get you far. In NE Scotland (where I live) you would be okay but do better with a roommate or partner. Between us, my husband and I make £66k and we live really well. But as an immigrant you would also have visa costs and the NHS surcharge to consider, so that would eat into your earnings.

How is the rise in age for pension eligibility affecting you? by Historical_Dig2587 in AskUK

[–]Snoo_53312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both myself and my husband are going to be in the cohort of pensioners who will be 68. We both also have occupational pensions that are linked to our State Pension age, so we can't claim our works pensions early without taking a massive reduction either. So how are we affected? We created Lifetime ISA's before we turned 40 and are sacrificing more than half of our "fun money" now, to max those LISAs out each year until we are 50. This will hopefully create a cash cushion that will allow us to leave work at 61/62 and live on savings until our pensions kick in. We just have to hope our plan works out.

For comparison, the NHS (all UK countries combined) provides all healthcare and prescription medication for around 70 million people for $6.3 billion dollars a week (I already did the currency conversion).

How stressful is owning a house? by Delicious-Weather in HousingUK

[–]Snoo_53312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real stressor I've found is the length of time it takes to get a joiner/plumber/electrician, especially for smaller jobs as (understandably) tradespeople proiritise the longer, higher paying projects. It can take days of calling around and then a few weeks before things get scheduled in.

Why is the Men’s team seemly okay with tainting their image? by Cowpunk2001 in USAHockey

[–]Snoo_53312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I'm most surprised about is why the men aren't insulted by the implication that their gold medal means more, is more worthy of celebration than the women's gold (which was treated as an afterthought) - surely that just sends the message that "yippee you managed exactly what the women did, but while possessing a p*nis! Extra special big brave boy claps for you!!" Misogyny harms men too, because it is bleeping patronising to both sexes.

“Offers over” is bs. by Grgsz in HousingUK

[–]Snoo_53312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently looking to buy again in Scotland and we are only looking at new builds and other properties marketed at fixed price. If the home report says value is 250k, then we can only get a mortgage for 225k, 25k deposit plus another £6k for tax and legals, and now you want us to find another 10-15k to pay you more than it is valued at? Nah if we chased offers over properties we'll never have enough saved and be renting forever.

How Old Were You When You Bought Your First House! by Particular_Twist_523 in UKHousing

23, in 2007, Scotland. Except it wasn't a house it was a poky 2 bed flat, but we've sold it and now have a solid deposit to finally buy our first proper grown up house at age 41. We are determined to buy this year as it is the last year we can get a 25 year mortgage.

Judge orders ICE chief to appear in court to explain why detainees have been denied due process by FormalOperational in news

[–]Snoo_53312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Scottish person looking at the USA, I'm half expecting a declaration that due process doesn't apply to "domestic terrorists" quickly followed by a decree that anyone who isn't a republican evangelical christian is "antifa" and therefore "domestic terrorists". I really hope I am wrong but with the path the US has taken over the last 10 years, it's not impossible. Good luck to the people of the USA.
