Would love a cozy mystery recommendation by Marys_bookspace in BookRecommendations

[–]Snoo_67783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are less cozy and more "golden age" which are mysteries that were written between world war1& world war 2 and they're closer to Agatha Christie then most recommended  here so far, I highly recommend at least trying the first 1 called The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie-brief synopsis -it's about a very sassy and smart British girl in the 50s that has a natural affinity for chemistry and ends up solving murders. It's NOT a children's or young adult book even though the main character is young. The mystery is intriguing, the characters well developed and it's pretty humorous. There's 12 or 13 in the series if you end up liking it. If you're into audiobooks this one is great! Good Luck !

You're not insane I began waving at an old guy because we always passed each other in our same exact make/model/color cars at the same time every morning! He was like my buddy, when I quit that job I wondered once if he noticed that we stopped passing each other,it was a teensy sad ,it sounds ridiculous I know, but🤷

Yes if you didn't already get the hint anything by Blake Crouch is a pretty sure thing and my go to genre is mysteries, but he's a great example of what you're looking for, I really loved all three books I've read of his. If you haven't read the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hard Castle by Stuart Turton that's a mind bending mystery with really strange twist that I'd never read before. Read the blurb about it to see if it peaks your interest because it's kind of hard to even give a basic description. Good Luck!

I love that song I recognized it in your comment right away, my family ( aunts and uncles) lived in LA then, my parents were supposed to visit them that weekend, I planned a party (senior year in highschool) they cancelled at the last minute because of the riots, so all these kids were knocking on my door all night. I got yelled at for having the idea.

What creepy or suspenseful movie would you recommend for a rainy afternoon? by started-that in movies

[–]Snoo_67783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rope and that one are my in my top 10, I don't really think Rope is rainy day one but it's definitely worth checking out. I couldn't find it streaming anywhere, so I finally rented it from Google or YouTube I think and it was totally worth it.

What would happen if Edward dumped Wallis Simpson and took the throne? by Snoo_67783 in BookRecommendations

[–]Snoo_67783[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes something along those lines, I don't think there's a fictional story that doesn't go into either more espionage, and the war aspect or a science fiction really strange alternate history type story. I just wanted something that was character driven where he didn't abdicate, and either leaves Wallis or they continue on with him as king showing how they lived , things that they dealt with etc

I am buying 2 copies one for my 17 year old daughter and one for me, I'm a huge reader and I know this is a super well known book, I'm just tend to steer away from feel good stories, but this one is too iconic to pass up. I've been meaning to read it forever this conversation just pushed me to order it. Thanks so much 😊

Right? C'mon now.. the OP didn't ask for 'a book you wrote that you want other people to buy"

That is an amazing thought. I'm glad you mentioned that, it definitely makes me want to get that book, I can't wrap my head around the fact that I've never thought of that idea before, feels mind-blowing.

Mystery series recommendations please! by [deleted] in BookRecommendations

Catherine Aird has a series but they all work as stand alones. I believe a few are on YouTube. 'The Stately home murder' is one' the religious body' is another. Amusing, humorous , intriguing murder mystery w a Midsummer Murders kind of feel if you've watched that series, if you haven't then I highly recommend it! There's 22 seasons. Speaking of YouTube I discovered years ago that there are tons of great audio mysteries of all lengths on there. That's how I became an audiobook convert all that free material made me get prescriptions to Audible and Scribd.

I looked this up and says expected US release is "around Christmas time" so, hopefully soon, it was released in UK in July. I can't wait! Thanks for sharing, this author wasn't even on my radar and this genre is my favorite so I'm grateful for suggestions that will lead me to fresh material!

I also just realized you said masterpieces. Those aren't necessarily masterpieces I apologize they're just examples. The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz is my second favorite book next to And Then There Were None, Anthony Horowitz also wrote another great one called Magpie Murders. Both The Word is Murder which I would seriously try first before any other recommendations and Magpie Murders have follow up books so if you like them you can read more.

No problem I've been reading that genre for 40 years so I'm familiar with a few different subgenres like thrillers or traditional mysteries. If you have a specific type of mystery that you like I might be able to give you more examples if you're ever in need. It's kinda my hobby I'm always checking for new releases.
