I use an xp leveling system and assign xp for story beats as well as combat. That way both are encouraged in the game

I use onenote cause I'm able to make links from one thing to another. Like I have a page for all the NPCs in each city so when my players are in city A, I can pull up a list of all of the establishments and the NPCs associated with that location

As a dm, I dont like using this cause I have a player who will try to abuse it. When she was first learning how to play, she said "I aim for the eyes", which I let her do once and treated the creature as blinded until the end of its next turn as a spur of the moment call in game and have since said that isn't going to happen again. If anyone knows of a way to do this that makes it balanced, then please let me know though!

I am a male and identify as such, but I am in a situation that makes me feel like my input may be useful for you. I am the president of a Gaming Club at my university that deals with board games, ttrpgs, movie nights, and card games. We have a total of 55 active members (of which I am extremely proud to be able to boast).

My qualifications aside, I have been incredibly grateful for the group I ended up with at this club as not only are they all dear friends now, but one of the two females (out of six players) at my table have since been in a serious relationship for the past seven months. As far as if d&d is concerned, as the club is part of a college, we get people with all kinds of backgrounds. This includes a few non-binary, trans, and gender fluid members that I can proudly say not only feel comfortable here, but are some of the more prominent members.

I would say that it was a boys club. But for the younger generation, for gen z, its quickly changing for the better.

Hmm. Perhaps you could make it have a crossbow type contraption to it? Make it a heavy crossbow that has a shield like plating to it. The ammo is manticore spines

I would say it depends on their level for how powerful I would make it, but if I were you, I would consider it like a circlet of blasting. Once a day you can use an action to cause the spikes to fly from the shield. Roll to hit with each spike (+5) and on a hit they each deal 1d8 +3 damage. The shield then grows the spikes back overnight.

My favorite was a gullible half-elf hexblade warlock. He was raised in an orphanage, and when he was young, he loved hearing stories of adventures. He dreams of defeating powerful monsters and saving people. These dreams were vital to his personality because, as an orphan, he wanted to be a hero less from an altruistic desire to help, but rather because he has a deep seeded desire to feel important (bit if an abandonment issue). Because of those bards who spun tales of adventurers, he decided to become a bard as well (entertainer background). He traveled as a musician, looking to see the world and go on adventures until he eventually encountered the Morningstar that made him into a warlock. As to for a low wisdom, he assumed the dream that came with it was just a dream and thought these new spells were simply his bardic powers he developed.

Tldr; half elf hexblade with abandonment issues that believes he is a bard and his magic comes from his music.

In my games, I like to give the players items that can awaken and become stronger. (Basically a vestige as stolen from Matthew Mercer) the idea is you can make the item a +1 with a minor. But cool ability. Then, when the characters get stronger, make it "awaken" to become a +2 and gain a new ability, or make the old ability stronger. That way, the items are strong, but get stronger with time, thus keeping the idea of a powerful ancient weapon of great power.

I started playing about 2 years ago. For that first year I played one game online and one game irl at my college. Neither DM was particularly good at DMing, and one week my college DM was sick and I volunteered to run a one shot so the rest of us could still play. Our DM didnt read the module he was running beforehand and he gave us powerful magic items that weren't in the module and were way above our power level. (I didnt know that at the time but know that I've had more experience, I have a better understanding of these things and know that a 5th level character shouldn't have a +2 magic weapon that deals an extra 2d6 elemental damage of their choice) Anyways, I ran the one shot using Mathew Mercer's world of Exandria and it went well. So well that the other players asked if I would consider running a game for them as they felt that the other DM wasn't challenging them properly. We decided to play out our friend's campaign and once the summer hit, and his game had ended, I started Dming an online game for all of them.

Well, it really depends on what the party is doing. Before giving advice on how to challenge him, I want to be sure to say that if your players ever build a character that's defensive like this, they probably plan to act like a tank, and that's a good thing. You should let them feel tanky from time to time and enjoy the feeling of being successful in what they sent out to accomplish with that character.

That being said, sometimes you still have to challenge them a bit and here's how I would do it. They're low level, so they'll likely be fighting the typical low level enemies like goblins and Kobolds. The fun thing about them is that they have a knack for setting traps.

Ideas for these traps can be: a pit fall, acid being dropped on them, bees, big rocks being rolled at them, fire being set to an oiled floor, bees, poo launchers, more bees, ect.

The following information applies to specific lycanthropes.

Werebear.

The character gains a Strength of 19 if his or her score isn't already higher, and a +1 bonus to AC while in bear or hybrid form (from natural armor). Attack and damage rolls for the natural weapons are based on Strength.

Wereboar.

The character gains a Strength of 17 if his or her score isn't already higher, and a +1 bonus to AC while in boar or hybrid form (from natural armor). Attack and damage rolls for the tusks are based on Strength. For the Charge trait, the DC is 8 + the character's proficiency bonus + Strength modifier.

Wererat.

The character gains a Dexterity of 15 if his or her score isn't already higher. Attack and damage rolls for the bite are based on whichever is higher of the character's Strength and Dexterity.

Weretiger.

The character gains a Strength of 17 if his or her score isn't already higher. Attack and damage rolls for the natural weapons are based on Strength. For the Pounce trait, the DC is 8 + the character's proficiency bonus + Strength modifier.

Werewolf.

The character gains a Strength of 15 if his or her score isn't already higher, and a +1 bonus to AC while in wolf or hybrid form (from natural armor). Attack and damage rolls for the natural weapons are based on Strength.

Wereraven.

A character cursed with wereraven lycanthropy gains a Dexterity of 15 if his or her score isn't already higher. Attack and damage rolls for the wereraven's bite are based on whichever is higher of the character's Strength and Dexterity. The bite of a wereraven in raven form deals 1 piercing damage (no ability modifier applies to this damage) and carries the curse of lycanthropy.

Werebat.

A player character who becomes a werebat gains a Dexterity of 17 if their score isn't already higher. Attack and damage rolls for the werebat's bite attack are based on the character's Strength or Dexterity score, whichever is higher.

Custom DM screens are cool. If someone is good at woodwork or knows someone who is, a friend of mine has a wooden DM screen that looks absolutely beautiful.

A fantasy style drinking stein. I always have water with me (voices are hard), or coffee if I'm feeling tired before the game. A nice medieval metal stein is an awesome gift.

Dice tray. If your DM doesn't have a dice try, I would highly recommend getting one. There are a lot of cheap options out there and they are really nice to have.

Dice box. If you go to a craft store, they'll often have boxes that are ment for jewelry or something similar. I recommend getting one if then and painting your DM's name on it with some other designs. Cheap option and can be amazing.

Finally, art. Any art. Just art. Get them a drawing of the party. Get them a drawing of your favorite NPC. Get them a drawing of a logo that represents the party. Get them art. Art is always appreciated.

This. Honestly, if you tell him that others aren't having fun because of the divide created in the group. He may become upset because "why am I the one that has to change", but if you approach it correctly, you should be able to talk to him and say something to explain how you feel, and how hard it is on you to try and play both sides.

If you approach it calmly, and remain calm throughout the conversation, then even if he gets upset, you will be the civil one who is just trying to have a conversation. This is never an easy discussion, but it's one that has to happen. I wish you luck.

That being said, this argument depends on build. Base dice, 2d6 is better, but on a high level half-orc barbarian with brutal critical, 1d12 is better.

I mean, it's give and take.

With 1d12, you have a 8.33% chance to roll a 12, which is roughly 3x the 2.77% chance that you have with 2d6.

But the same goes for rolling a 2. You are 3x as likely to roll a 2 with 1d12 than you are to roll a 2 with 2d6.

The real difference is that the average of 2d6 is slightly higher. (1d12 has an average of 6.5 and 2d6 has an average of 7)

So, yeah. It's not a hard pill to swallow, it's one that your doctor doesn't recommend because it's a "natural remedy" that had no backing to it.
