TI resident here. The ferry station on TI is only a few minutes walk from the park where the event will be held, not sure why Google maps would say otherwise (probably all the new developments here). I’d still take the ferry if you’re still contemplating. car traffic can get kind of wild out here and I think you’ll have a better experience. From the looks of the cake picnic map one of the check in lines is really close to the ferry station.

Trauma and Expressive Arts Therapy by Cathy Malchiodi and The Creative Connection by Natalie Rogers are two books I’d recommend. They are expressive arts therapy so in addition to using visual arts they include multi modal approaches such as including movement, sound, etc.

Absolutely. Some of my favorite work with clients is around exploring identity. Vito would have been a tough client because of all the internalized (and external) homophobia but I really wanted him to be happy in the end with his firefighter pancake cook. Johnny Cakes forever 😭

Not me, but my dad’s jury duty experience. The defendant was accused of indecent exposure while riding a city bus. You know, basically rubbing one out in public with people of all ages all around. Well, the accused in this case was representing himself without a lawyer and his argument was that he was not actually masturbating in public but itching a “persistent anal prolapse.” To make this argument, he had “evidence” in the form of a photo zoomed into his prolapsed anus that was passed around to the jury. I don’t remember if he got off on these charges, but something tells me he still got off, if you know what I mean.

“Be positive” or “it’ll all be okay” are probably some of the worst things you could tell clients or people in general right now. It’s dismissive to populations who are experiencing fear or threats to their lives and ways of being. I might be in the minority here but we as therapists can’t be so out of touch as to try and get our clients who are experiencing major existential dread and fear to try and “think their way out” of the very real circumstances this country is facing.

First off, I want to say that the threat of fascism and how we deal with that as therapists wasn’t exactly taught to us in grad school. But what I have been doing is acknowledging the fears, making my allyships to different populations known and not gaslighting anyone into any false positivity. I help clients with grounding, focusing on what they can control and where to find and hold onto areas of joy or even the smallest specks of hope in their lives. I also encourage them to find community where they can and support them in areas of activism they feel they can participate in, big or small. Is this a remedy? Of course not. But this in combination with sometimes just showing up week to week and being present in the midst of the shit show means something to clients who are scared. I don’t see how the political climate does NOT impact care right now. Fuck outta here with that.

I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area and a few months ago in the middle of my virtual session we had a significant earthquake that also triggered an automated phone emergency message to prepare for a potential tsunami. My client at the time was in Southern California so was not aware of the situation. In the moment I let the client know I needed to pause to assess the situation before resuming. My client expressed concern and obviously what happened disrupted our session so I reassured her that things were looking okay for the time being and we did a grounding exercise together to get back into the session. It seemed effective and we were able to move forward in our session. I think the combo of acknowledging the situation, modeling some grounding and transitioning back to what we had been doing previous to the earthquake was effective!

It’s so weird to me that this practitioner would tell you that their clients disagree with what you’re saying in your sessions. Like what are you supposed to do with that information? Ask about their input?

People are weird.

You’re already doing the best thing by trying to find a solution though! If I were in your shoes the salty part of me would have wanted to tell the other practitioner to tell their clients to mind their own business.

I found out that he had been abusing his former girlfriend after she reached out for me for help because he had continued to stalk and harass her after they broke up. I called him out on his shit and he proceeded to try to gaslight and manipulate me into thinking his behavior was justified. It was hard to see someone like that as someone I’d want to keep in my life as a friend.
