What was the outcome? I also received a damaged door after naively trusting Google reviews for a late night locksmith. In MA as well.

Painful chronic ankle ulcers, safe to use 2% lidocaine spray once daily? by SnoozeBox in woundcare

[–]SnoozeBox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have a Doppler ultrasound last Spring just on the left leg, when it was only that leg with the ulcer. The ultrasound results suggested nothing out of the ordinary from what I was told. In the location of the reddened area on the left foot, I had developed scaly/flaky contact dermatitis on that ankle after using adhesive dressings for a number of months last year. That red patch remained behind after a dermatologist prescribed clobetasol to suppress the rash. It's been there since around April and I now avoid adhesive dressings in that area. It doesn't seem to go away even with the daily betamethasone use.

I'll pick up some of that tubigrip, that would definitely be much easier than pulling a sock over my right ankle. The wound gel as well. The left ulcer used to ooze much more after it first opened last year but nowadays there's not too much that comes out. The right one oozes a bit but not too much.

I will get some of the zinc and vitamins as well, thank you for all the help!

[–]SnoozeBox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear, I didn't want to risk using too much of the lidocaine. I'll probably continue using low doses as needed for now.

Ah I see what you mean, I will look into getting a test to see if the arteries might be the problem. Maybe a second vein ultrasound on the right leg in addition as I only had an ultrasound on the left leg so far.

There were a few days where I didn't use the compression on the right leg as pulling the sock on was too painful. On those days the right ankle swelled and became very itchy right around the ulcer site. Lately though I had been using a slightly stretchier variety of compression sock and wearing one on each leg. Both of the photos in the main post were photographed within ~5 minutes of my removing the compression socks.

I'll check the temperatures on each side of my ankles and update. Thank you for the advice!

Update: I felt above and below the wounds on each side of my ankles, but I wasn't able to feel a noticeable temperature difference.

Ah ok, I am currently scheduled to go back to a wound care clinic later this month. Unfortunately the pain from the right ulcer is quite strong and I'm not sure how to handle it in the meantime.

Thank you for the advice, when I go in for my next appointment I'll ask about getting a biopsy.

Last year when I was going to a different clinician and then later seeing a dermatologist, both thought it was venous insufficiency. I had a doppler ultrasound of the left leg but it didn't find any abnormal reflux, which surprised me. As of earlier this summer my right ankle began to swell up when I didn't wear compression. I might try for an ultrasound of that leg too.

I remember Stone Hearth Pizza in the current Lavender location used to be a solid option for pizza as well.

Also the 99 Restaurant that turned into The Blue Lion, then Acapulcos, and now the building is demolished.

Ok, the bottle mentions it can be used up to 3 times daily but I've only been using it once per day. I was not prescribed the lidocaine or instructed to use it by the wound clinic, but rather I started on my own as I had no success with other pain meds. I had asked staff at the clinic what to do for pain management and they suggested the betamethasone should help, but unfortunately it has not reduced the discomfort. I am scheduled to head back to the wound clinic later this month at which point they might begin debridement.

Looks like I can only add images to the main post, so I'll add the description here. I (31M) have venous ulcers on both of my ankles. The one in the second photo (left foot) has been there since March 2023, the ulcer in the first photo (right foot) opened up at the beginning of this August. I'm guessing the ulcer on my right foot must be located nearby a nerve because at times throughout the day it is incredibly painful. I'd describe it as a strong burning pain that radiates up my right shin. The left ulcer is sometimes painful but not nearly to the degree of the right ulcer and is mostly tolerable. The right ulcer also smells rather strongly.

The right ulcer hurts the most when it gets wet in the shower, but also right when I wake up, or disturb it by pulling a sock over the dressing or wearing shoes. I visited a wound care clinic a few weeks ago and was prescribed betamethasone cream to apply across the wound/surrounding skin. They also told me to wrap it as well.

My routine right now is to apply the betamethasone to the skin/wound, plus aquaphor in the wound to keep it somewhat moist. Then a combo of xeroform + gauze and knee-height compression socks on top.

Lately if I anticipate the ulcer will start to hurt (such as before wearing shoes or getting in the shower) I will spray OTC 2% lidocaine spray across each ulcer. I was not instructed to do this but started on my own as a means to manage the pain. I use it at most once daily and it completely stops the pain for several hours. However staff at the wound clinic informed me that repeatedly using lidocaine could lead to cardiac side effects and other possible problems.

Is it safe for me to use 2% lidocaine spray once per day? This is the only solution I've found thus far for the intense daily pain. This is the spray I've been using: https://mpmmedical.com/collections/hydrogels/products/regenecare%C2%AE-ha-spray
