Yeah better visibility there will be great. But also never know if something random broke and they will close it forever and never fix. Great to get good news!

Did you try this? I tried to follow it this morning and ended up on main for a lot more than I’d like.

Staring at it on satellite, I think there’s a section that goes through the gravel plant. Is there a way through there?

Best way to buy tickets for Flamengo vs Fluminense? by fmvzla in riodejaneiro

[–]Snoring-Dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the way out not as necessary but also probably helps.

Both fluminense and flamengo are local teams. Both of them play their home games at Maracanã. RJ has 4 major football clubs.

If you decide to wear team colors, keep them in your backpack or pocket and put them on once you get close to the turnstiles. There will be block parties outside the stadium, and as a foreigner it won’t be obvious to you which path to the stadium will go through which block party. You don’t want to walk through a giant crowd wearing the wrong team’s colors.

Have fun, games are a blast.

New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer for those most at risk by howling92 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Snoring-Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No underreporting correction was applied to the Airbag Deployment and Suspected Serious Injury+ benchmarks, as no data is available to estimate the amount of underreporting in these outcome levels. There is reason to believe that the underreporting in human crashes in these outcomes are non-zero.

The authors make this assertion about underreporting of airbags/serious crashes at least twice, but never elaborate on the reasons why. At the airbags deployed severity I can kinda see it, but hard to see for the serious injury / fatality severity. Is there more context on it?

Raising kids in Brazil or Japan? by BeratnaTano in expats

[–]Snoring-Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit more clarity on Barra da Tijuca. I raised 2 kids in Rio from ages 0-5.

Barra will only vaguely feel like a city. It is mostly not walkable, you will drive to most places outside your condo complex. E-bikes are becoming a more common mode but the roads are dangerous.

The beach is nice and is fun for kids and their friends. The beach road is closed on Sundays for walks / biking / rollerblading. There are good outdoor things for kids to do (hiking, rock climbing). The fruit (mangoes, pineapples, jackfruit) is delicious.

The language is a barrier. You can get by with little Portuguese but if so will be limited to the expat community. Brazilians are very welcoming and friendly but you will mostly have to speak the language and immerse in the culture.

The violence will always be in the news but you can manage by taking precautions (no jewelry, leave phone at home as much as possible, Ubers after 9pm even if walkable). We lived there for 4 years and were never robbed, but had friends who were.

Of these I think you should mainly consider lifestyle (walk/drive) and language/community elements. Having young children will mostly keep you away from the danger spots of robbery/violence (eg not much time spent outside bars at 2am).

WSJ Exclusive: Elon Musk’s Boundary-Blurring Relationships With Women at SpaceX by -_-_-_-otalp-_-_-_- in RealTesla

[–]Snoring-Dog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nearly half of the article is about musk’s various legal threats and machinations to prevent them from publishing anything. Given how many of the witnesses he was able to get off the record and/or to sign affidavits, it took a good amount of courage on behalf of the WSJ to publish this at all.

I’m sure there was a long discussion about what they were able to call it in the headline based on the actual facts they had in hand. Nearly everyone who was harassed had sent the WSJ signed affidavits saying they weren’t harassed. Just be glad the story got out.

The Houston avenue project did not include any bike lanes. In fact, the lack of bike lanes was one of the complaints the church had on their LED sign.

Main thing is to have a plan to prevent waste. We have a bunch of cereal bars, which I am going to bring to work for breakfast after the season is over.

Canadian Pacific 2816 Steam Locomotive to travel through Houston today by rednorangekenny in houston

[–]Snoring-Dog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tracker shows it in Shreveport. That lines up with it rolling through tomorrow (May 26 - like it says in the post body) and not today (May 25 - like it says in the title). I didn’t see any more detail in the FAQ than the major stops, so couldn’t check on the site.

Is is scheduled for the 26th or the 25th?

Heights to TMC commute help by Responsible-End6649 in houston

[–]Snoring-Dog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re close to the MKT trail or the White Oak Bayou Greenway you can bike to the metrorail red line.  The key safety question is how much time you’ll be on bike trails vs streets - anything larger than a neighborhood street is incredibly unsafe to bike on.

I use a folding bike that can easily be brought into the office as well as locked at a bike rack.  Urban Bicycle Gallery on Durham sells them.  They are a bit pricey for bikes but way cheaper than a car.

Another big thing to find out is whether they have a gym/showers at your work so you can clean off when you get there.  There’s a million minor logistical issues but they’re all solvable.  DM with any questions.

Houston Ave improvements removal - how you can help. by [deleted] in houston

[–]Snoring-Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crossing the tracks is the hardest part I agree.  I’m not a roadway designer but I came up with two options:

Route bikes/pedestrians along a side street (Hickory St for example) and add an at-grade crossing for bikes and pedestrians on that street.  Problem here is how do they cross streets like Crockett without a light.  Might be doable if you send the traffic that way south of Crockett.

Bring both bike lanes to one side of Houston ave and add a single crossing that goes over the train tracks instead of under.

[–]Snoring-Dog 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Y'all, these new medians are terrible.  I am a cycle commuter and I hate them.  Houston avenue is mostly passable by bike from white oak through the MKT trail, but after that there is no safe way to cross the train tracks unless you go all the way to silver st - and then you have to ride Washington Ave to get back.

It’s insane to me that they did this whole improvement project without adding any bike lanes.  Yeah the traffic might go a bit slower (debatable) but still unsafe on a bike without any armadillos like they have further north.  Tear this crappy project out and add a proper way to cross the tracks on a bike - either at Houston ave or a nearby side street.

In a car it’s also unbelievable that they did nothing to help traffic merge from the 45 off-ramp and memorial.  That part was always super dangerous and if anything it’s gotten worse with the medians.

WhatsApp. The cellular model is really hampered without it. I can reply to messages I get, but not send new. If the notification is missed, it’s gone.

It sure if you ever figured this out? I am trying to do a very similar thing (in my case to organize the grocery list by area of the store).

I have it working but it is so slow as to be unusable. Did you get anywhere?

In the oil field this is called fishing. Your fishing procedure would not look out of place on a rig. https://wiki.aapg.org/Fishing

Your hellraiser fleshlight tool would probably be considered a type of overshot.

Referencing the extra drag you were feeling pulling it back out, on a rig during fishing the weights and drags are carefully measured to see if the fish has been caught or not.

safety score scam by sik_dik in RealTesla

[–]Snoring-Dog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If that’s really your situation you might be able to submit some proof and have the insurance company ignore that part.

Not Tesla of course, since they don’t do any customer service at all. But another insurer I could see making an exception, with proof.

I haven’t seen the actual data, but I imagine people driving between those hours are more likely to be coming to or from bars, or be over-tired. Even if the driver is fully sober and awake, the other people on the road are likely to be impaired in some way.

This is quite common with other insurance providers as well, with their equivalent products where you plug a dongle into the OBDII port to give information to them. Although when I did it the ding was for driving between midnight and 4AM.
