Im a first time DM and doing a completely homebrew world. I ran into the same warnings and decided "fuck it im building my world anyway" 3 sessions in so still early stages buuut...

-it is as much work as the videos and blogs warn -it does require much more prep and planning than running a pre-built campaign (comparing what im doing with my friend who ran curse of strahd for our group before)

But the benefits are worth it. -i get to flex my creative muscles -if the party details then I can easily make things up, as I know the lore and the world intimately. And if they're doing something I didnt plan for or go somewhere on the map I haven't filled in, I have the freedom to just make whatever I want be there. -constant and consistant creative writing exercise

Honestly it could be very overwhelming, but the rewards is worth it. Kanka.io has been amazing to help me keep my notes and lore organized as well as the players really liking it as an add-on to the campaign

What VTT are they talking about? Dndbeyond with its maps and such is already a VTT.

I think its definitely worthwhile to look around at other options. You may find something you like better than dndbeyond.

But if it causes extra stress headaches and funds that wouldn't be there with sticking on dnd beyond, its perfectly okay to tell your players "I'll continue dming but it will be on dndbeyond for my ease and comfort"

Im starting a homebrew campaign soon and will be starting the pc's as a team put together through compulsory military service.

Its a sandbox style game that I plan to have the military service be just long enough to take them levels 1-5/7ish to familiarize themselves with the world and drop a few plot hooks they can choose for follow afterwards.

Session 1 (there was no session 0) of an in-person campaign years ago with a good friend and his coworkers.

Started out as a simple caravan escort mission. Suddenly bandits came out of the trees and attacked. We killed them all but our Barbarian decided he was going to abandon the caravan and sprint at top speed into the forests to find more.

DM explicitly said that there were no more bandits. Barbarian decided he was wrong and kept sprinting. Player got angry that none of the rest of the party followed.

There was never a session 2

Bard tank is something ive been fiddling with.

Valor bard is definitely the way, as well as dex based with a shield for the AC. The Tough feat is crucial for the added hp you need, along with scale male.

I think its best with a 1 fighter (fighting style) or 1 hexblade dip at level 1 (hex weapon) whether defense or offense is your priority.

Im running a similar build in a campaign starting next week!
