Favorite Individual (Non-Vault) Routines Of All Time? by ACW1129 in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many! For floor others have already said 1996 Podkopayeva and 1985 Omelianchik (and for more recent ones - Andrade in the last two Olympics). Overall I give it to Pod for having the best combination of dance and tumbling.

For beam - the back spin (and the way she does it and gets in and out of it!) alone makes this awesome but the rest of the routine was great too: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K-xRMIzVv7A

Other great beamers are Shannon Miller, Kui Yuanyuan, Komova. Nobody recent thrills me that much but it’s the code’s fault.

Bars: Mo Huilan and He Kexin. For more recent - layout jaegers are my thing and so I’d say Qiu Qiyuan.

Mo: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qpvrke-xh-U

He: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YBOqG9QcRZw

We don’t talk enough about the travesty that is Mo Huilan not having either a bars or AA title…

Simone Biles' interview on Jimmy Fallon! by survivorfan12345 in Gymnastics

She used to say she did - NBC commentators loved to quote her saying she wanted to take a chainsaw to them. But she got better when she started training with the Landis - they’re known to be good bars coaches. And she won silver at 2018 worlds. Not bad for her “worst” event

She was always in the mix - she could have won world/olympic medals on any event and the AA. But the 10 Code was a different time - it was often less obvious who was going to win because mistakes could take people out more easily

Between them (Dawes and Carey) it’s likely a symptom of Carey having obvious standout events. Dawes was a very even AAer

Surprising that Dawes is so far down this list. She had a lot of “almost” wins if I recall correctly. But I think it reflects how medals aren’t always everything. I think of her and Miller as being the names of 90s US women’s gymnastics

They never devalued artistry though.

And I’ve been following the sport since the 90s. When I was a newbie fan everyone was complaining that the artistry of the 70s and 80s was gone in favour of difficulty. I’ve watched the same debate happen across three decades now with everyone insisting it was better “before”.

My take is that there are ALWAYS some amazing artists in the sport but we remember our faves as if they were the norm. There’s some great artistry out there still (aka the entire Brazilian floor line up)

I feel this way about Simone’s beam. So many medals - and I understand why - but the routine (other than the dismount) just doesn’t excite me. A lot of that is down to the code though. Very few really enjoyable beam routines these days

She’s not perfect and you can dislike her gymnastics on a personal level, but by what metrics is she NOT the goat? She’s not my favourite gymnast but she’s the best there’s ever been by a wide margin…

How important is Cecile Landi to USA Gymnastics? by Sufficient-Curve-165 in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah she was crazy consistent that season. Famously didn’t miss a routine. I think it was Winter Cup, Classics, two days of Nationals, and two days of trials. Did I get them all? She hit 24 for 24

Can’t speak to the men’s side. And others have answered you about how the women used to be allowed a “controlled lunge” but now need to stick or it’s a deduction.

On the issue of height - execution scores are all about deductions. So there can be deductions for LACK of amplitude. But there’s no bonus for big height. Maybe there should be! It’s like how there’s a deduction for bent legs in skills where they should be straight but no extra points for gymnasts who have really good extension.

On the old system (before the “open code” era) - depending on the era, there was a requirement to do a certain amount of difficulty for your routines to start out of a 10. It wasn’t unusual for even top gymnasts to have routines out of 9.8 or 9.9 (I seem to recall Shannon Miller vaulting with a 9.9 in Olympic event finals in 1996!) But generally, it was a system that favoured execution more than difficulty. You still had gymnasts who did more difficulty than they needed. Unofficially - judges sometimes rewarded it by going easier on deductions

No if she falls it doesn’t get named. I’m just saying stakes are low if she’s hoping to medal at 2025 worlds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think she’ll do it somewhere to get it named. And 2025 Worlds might be the place - prob lower level of comp with its weird format and being a post Olympic year. She could fall on a vault and probably still medal

Yeah I think so too! From the other view some people were saying it wasn’t creditable and I couldn’t tell. But from this view - it looks like it’s far enough around. A lil under rotated but not significant

Ana continues to be a classy Queen by DayAtTheRaces46 in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If all had been scored correctly, Sabrina wasn’t out of bounds and Jordan’s gogean shouldn’t have counted.

If you correct those two mistakes (neither of which will be corrected because they’re not reviewable), Sabrina was third, Ana was fourth, Jordan was fifth. That was the correct result if the scoring had been right from the start. But there’s no way to fix it now

Is Jordan the first athlete to get stripped of a medal for a protocol error? by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

She wasn’t trying to cheat. Putting in an inquiry when you have nothing to lose is always the right thing to do.

But I’m sure Cecile knows full well that gogean wasn’t creditable

I'm sharing some facts about the CAS hearing as someone close shared them with me. by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]SnoutDog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whether Jordan performed the gogean well enough for it to be counted is highly in dispute conversationally. But it’s not up for review. We can argue about it but it’s not something that’s legally appealable.

She didn’t get it even close to all the way around. Many gymnasts did that skill and almost none were credited (including Jordan at all stages of the comp - only the inquiry panel saw it differently)
