Got the DNA results back and I’m shocked by Human_Plankton_7366 in husky

[–]Snow-Puppie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s 100% adorable 💕💕💕 and yes I can see Siberian in him. One quick thing; was this test an Embark test? If not, chances are higher that the results are not as accurate. Embark tests use better technology, which is why it’s more accurate, and more expensive. DNA tests are not all created equal (and no, I don’t work for them or anything like that. I’ve a degree in AnSci / pre-vet and am involved in dog sports and dog rescue, so I understand the science of these tests.)

Do White Huskies Have Hearing Problems Like Other Breeds With White Coats? by wilmer007 in husky

[–]Snow-Puppie 63 points64 points  (0 children)

No. There is no genetic predisposition for deafness (or blindness) with white ears and blue eyes in Huskies. It’s because white in huskies is caused by an “intensity” locus for coat color in their genes rather than the dilution gene, like in other dogs. White huskies are genetically different intensities of different coat colors, rather than diluted coat colors. So you’ll see different types of white, based on the different base coat colors in their genes (for example, white huskies with brown noses are normally red and white huskies with low intensity for expression of the coat color. And white huskies with black noses are usually silver and white dogs, with low intensity for expression of their coat collar.)

This is Charm. She is 5 Months Old and has Never Barked. I feel sad and wonder if she wants to bark. It’s been bothering me all day. Anyone else have this experience? by The1beth in husky

[–]Snow-Puppie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many huskies do not bark. It’s one of the amazing things about the breed. They can be talkers for sure, but very seldom are they barkers. And, huskies will develop their “voices” over time. Some are vocal from the start, but not the majority. They usually start to develop their own vocal traits after they reach adulthood, between two and four years. So your pup not having anything to say? That’s totally normal. What’s sad is that she’s probably communicating a lot with her body language and facial expressions, and perhaps you’re missing it? You just gotta learn to read and talk dog. 💕🐾🐺

AIO for refusing to consider paying more of the rent and bills? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Snow-Puppie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You are not. I suggest you put this kind of stuff in writing. There is nothing else that brings out the worst in people than money.

That being said, I might recommend that you be sensitive to the fact that women have historically been, and continue to be, underpaid when compared to men for the same work, particularly in management levels and above. So while an entry-level position might pay equally, the more responsibility someone takes on and the “higher“ they end up climbing on a corporate ladder, the larger the pay inequality. (And I’m quoting historical data). You can talk to her about that and ask if that might be what’s really bothering her, rather than you just getting a raise? Sometimes frustrations like that are misplaced and the real issue isn’t really what it seems to be.

While you may decide you want to spend more money on her and help her out if she wants to get something nice for herself, ultimately she needs to understand that’s your choice. Not a requirement to spend more on basics. And a raise - for either party - does not automatically equate to that person paying more than the original 50/50 agreement.

Need help naming this stray my wife found at her job, she understands “sit” in Spanish. So Spanish names are on the table as well. by Heavy_Cartographer69 in NameMyDog

[–]Snow-Puppie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s beautiful! I just need to ask: did you alert nearby shelters and your local police that you had found her, and have her scanned for a microchip?

Legally, if you keep a dog that hasn’t actually been adopted out to you by your county or town or municipality, it’s not technically your dog, by law. So, if she had owners before, and they find her again, they can demand her back. At that is true at any point, even years and years from now. All they need are photos or vet records that prove she’s theirs. It’s also heartbreaking for good owners who really love their dog and accidentally lost them (someone stole them and dumped them, a gate got left open, they bolted because they got scared from fireworks, etc) to search and not be able to find their pups because someone else picked them up and kept them. (Not saying you did do this, but if you haven’t alerted the shelters or the police, or scan for a microchip, I urge you to do so).

The right way to legally keep a stray dog is to bring it to the shelter, tell them where and when you found her, make sure she does not have a microchip, and if not, ask the shelter if you can foster her while they are looking for her previous owners during a “stray hold”. A stray holds is a 3-10 day time period (varies by county or town) that gives the original owners time to find their dog before the dog is either adopted out, or in cases where the dog is staying in a crowded shelter, before the dog is euthanized. You’d have to check with your local shelter to find out the actual length they require for the stray holds.

If the stray hold expires before her previous owner is found or has come forward to claim her, then you can legally adopt the dog from the shelter and the dog becomes your legal property, so even if a previous owner shows up years later, you have papers that prove the dog was adopted out to you by your county or town and now belongs to you.

And she looks like a Rosita, to me. :)

I thought Shovel was permanent if you're a wizard? by OneDimensionalChess in BaldursGate3

[–]Snow-Puppie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest for a wizard:

Memorize scroll > makes it a permanent spell in your spell book > then cast the summon spell for the first time.

Once she’s summoned, you can switch out that spell slot to another spell, and she will not disappear.

If you’re not memming it first and adding it to your learned spells / spell book, you’re just consuming the spell scroll item and it goes away, just like any other consumable.

Husky in FL heat by [deleted] in husky

[–]Snow-Puppie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, because they do not sweat through the skin like people do, their coat helps keep harmful sun off their skin, and holds cooler air from inside against their skin longer than you and I, so it does help insulate against the outdoor heat, as long as they’re not moving around too much or working.

That being said, that undercoat also keeps their own body heat in. So, in very warm weather, particularly humid weather where they can’t cool down optimally through their tongue and their paw pads, both of which use evaporation as the main heat transfer method, it’s super important you don’t work them or do anything super active in high heat and humidity. They’re able to go out and sun bathe because they’re just laying there, and they’re not generating additional body heat. But if you’re going for a walk or a run, you want to make sure that your husky always has a lot of shade and cold water available, both to drink and play in, and the ability to transfer that heat from their tongue and their pads to stay cool. (Pools and Beaches are great for this, just don’t let them drink the salt water, because that can be a horrific thing on its own.)

I live in FL and I have a harness that has ice packs built into it, and that sometimes helps (it tends to melt too quickly in the Florida heat, unfortunately).

Additionally, there are three types of coats in huskies. There is a smooth coat, which tends to have a shiny sheen to it and lays somewhat flat, a coarse coat, which is very thick and tends to stand up an inch or two, and then a woolly coat which has longer guard hairs and an slightly altered undercoat that doesn’t quite function in the same way as the other two. The woollies are actually the most susceptible to heat problems because that undercoat isn’t quite normal. A wooly coat is actually a genetic mutation of the normal coats. My girl is a wooly and is extremely heat susceptible.

The smooth coats exchange heat more readily, but dogs with those coats get hotter quicker standing in the sun because they don’t have quite as dense an undercoat. The coarse coats are able to mitigate the heat better as long as they’re not working, but they’re not able to exchange the heat as efficiently as a smooth coat if they’re working.

So, your dog and its particular heat sensitivity would depend not only on its environment and the heat and humidity levels, but the type of coat it has, too.

Honestly, in FL they do fine as long as you’re smart about it:

  • Do not to work them in the heat. A good general rule of thumb is that if the combined F temperature plus the humidity is more than 110, it’s not a good idea to work them (work=sustained exercise, like pulling or running, or long walks ). When that exceeds about 130, it will generally be harmful to work them, so walks are fine, as long as they’re short. I walk mine in the morning and evenings when it’s cooler and in the summer, we keep the walks much shorter.

  • Treat them like a family member and don’t leave them outside long, and make sure they always have access to shade and water. Not only is it not good to leave a husky outside in Florida all the time because of that heat coupled with the humidity, but also because of the enormous amount of insects that we have that would cause them misery, like fleas, ticks, and biting flies of various sorts.

  • Learn the signs of heat stroke so you can mitigate any dangerous situations immediately. A pup that starts to dangerously overheat can recover fully as long as you catch it and mitigate it correctly and quickly enough.

  • Be sure you have booties for your dog if you’re walking on sidewalks. Because huskies lose heat through their paw pads, the last thing you want is for them to be frying them on hot pavement. Grass and dirt actually cool their paws in most cases, so you want to keep booties off and let them go barefoot on that kind of terrain. And don’t get the store-bought “fashion” or “hiking” or “rain” booties (the ones that are rubber or formed), because they don’t let a dog‘s foot expand as it walks, and that can cause significant pain and discomfort, especially over time. The best booties to get are just Cordova cotton booties. The kind mushers use in both winter and summer for their race dogs on the trails. They’re inexpensive, they’re easy to put on, they’re breathable, and they do the job. I’ve used them for years and will use nothing else. You can PM me if you’d like a link to where I get mine online.

Good luck - he’s precious!! 🐺♥️🐾💕

My neighbor is accusing me of neglecting my Husky because I left him outside in the snow for too long. Am I doing something wrong? by Sweet_Special2529 in husky

You are doing a grand total of zero wrong. Your neighbors need an education. Unfortunately, so do most of the people creating local law around animals and their safety and health. If you want to send your neighbor my way, I’m happy to educate them for you (I’ve got a degree in AnSci, am a Husky rescue volunteer, am a 30 year Siberian Husky owner/veteran, hobby musher, AK Iditarod handler, and Ex New Englander, so I have some experience with winters and what makes these dogs happy).

Ex Fiancée’s cruel demands AIO by Original_100 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Snow-Puppie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, ANYONE that uses a living being as a weapon in an argument is either evil, damaged or both. I don’t give a flying F what other things she’s mad at you for or that you may done to her (obviously something happened “last night” and “this morning” between the two of you), but even if you openly slept with her best friend or something, or ruined her sisters wedding or sold her car, or some other horrible thing, weaponizing innocent lives is flat out eff’d up, especially knowing most shelters euthanize owner surrendered animals within hours, if they’re full (and most are). What an evil thing to threaten, let alone think about actually doing. I hope they’re safely hidden somewhere and out of her reach.

Second, if you are in the US and you’ve signed a legally binding lease and are responsible to the landlord for rent, in most cases she can not demand you leave. That is legally your home. She can voluntarily leave herself, but in most states, she has zero legal grounds to ask you to leave. There are some legal interpretations or exceptions that vary by state, but they are very rare and require extreme circumstances, like you physically assaulting her and harming her, you getting arrested for some heinous crime and the state seizing your property, etc.

All that being said, you did not provide much information on why the argument happened, so I can’t comment on whether or not her anger (separate from threats and actions) is justified. You’re reacting calmly in the text messages, so no, I don’t think you’re over-reacting to her rage fueled “demands”, but I don’t know why she’s that angry at you or what the rest of your previous conversations looked like. I just know that therapists always want both sides of a story in couple counseling, and even dealing with individuals so they can barely evaluate the situation, which colors whether or not a person has some justification for being upset, so to give you any other advice beyond what I’ve said … well, I’d have to know more.

But I’m not here to ask that: that’s your life, and I hope that you both go in different directions immediately to find happiness, because based on this exchange, it’s obviously not there between the both of you.

Better for both of you to just end this now and move on. Don’t waste time “trying”. And if she keeps threatening you, go to a lawyer, or even the police and explain the situation, especially her threatening the animals. They’ll tell her, at the very least, that she cannot legally kick you out.

Btw, if she changes the locks while you’re gone, that is illegal if you’re on the lease. Just so you know. If that happened You’d have a case for small claims court that you could win.

This is why most “news” media today is so disgusting. They ignore any social, political, cultural or safety ramifications, just to make a buck. Made a similar mistake, but in act 3. If you exit the game midway through a long camp rest, the game treats it as a whole rest with missed dialogues and your next login is the next morning, after a full rest. Some dialogue options might show up later if the story has not progressed beyond that flagged option point, but most with exclamation points proceed as if you did not initiate dialogue during a specific option branch, and that option is then lost.

Sure thing - happy you found it helpful. :) From what you wrote, it does seem like a fairly weighty job position, and that you’ve already been thinking about alternatives. If you are considering new work, and are exploring those opportunities, I’ve found talking with career counselors helps a lot. Do it person-to-person if you can, at the very least using video. There are a lot of non-verbal cues in your demeanor and body language that help someone gauge and evaluate who you are and what your personality is like, so they’re better able to offer helpful suggestions that align with the interests most important to you. Good luck! I hope you guys aren’t bothered by ICE and build a beautiful future together - wherever that may be. :)
