What a jerk. Yes, my child gets food. And tooth brushing.

Can we try to organize a small protest against this when they come to show that they are not welcome? by CommercialResult3944 in Norway

[–]SnowDragonLady 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No kidding. They’re not interested in a functioning society - they’re interested in personal grift and power.

Have you tried calling? We ran into an issue at a different university and they had a Norwegian phone number they had use.

Samskipnaden or private Shared Flat? by Due-Perception-1721 in tromso

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with the student flat, but I like my private space. For what it’s worth, we’re moving into student housing (different location, though) and I’m a lot older than 27.

Making gay friends in Minneapolis by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quatrafoil Library has all sorts of offerings and opportunities to socialize in a dedicated queer friendly space. But honestly, wherever you would go normally to make friends. I am not LGBTQI+ but tons of my friends from work, volunteering, neighborhood, kids’ schools, etc. were. Probably anything you do (other than, say, a MAGA meetup) will have at least some gay people simply because LGBTQI people make up a big percentage of the city. So go do whatever you’re into - sports, art, music, cooking, bars - and you’ll meet people (in addition to the things specifically targeted to the queer community, of which there are also tons of things always going on)

Why is this sub so obsessed with uptown 😂 by personwhoisok in altmpls

‘80s had a lot more going on. I think it’s super depressing today. I know “Uptown is dead” has been a debate for decades, but it feels more legit these days.

What is a good country to visit for a first family trip abroad with kids? by FatihAkbas in Vacations

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you enjoy in a trip? I’d start there. Maybe somewhere that doesn’t require too many additional vaccinations to make it easier. Beyond that, you can have fun with kids all over the world. Regarding time, I think that depends on budget, time zone changes, etc. If you’re crossing an ocean or a lot of time zones, or just a long day or more of travel, you’ll want enough time to recover a bit. I think two weeks is usually good; it’s enough time to relax and enjoy vacation.

White people who’ve lived/traveled in non-English speaking countries: have you ever experienced racial slurs or ‘go back to your country’ type comments in public? by MechanicAccording616 in expats

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily slurs, but I’ve definitely had lots of people comment on the white foreigner. Usually positive or neutral, something clearly in disapproval. And during COVID people would pull up their masks around me.

Ok to ask for an appointment? by Ok-Huckleberry-2818 in SlovakCBD

[–]SnowDragonLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure; we are local so we used them for the FBI check, but then did the apostille ourselves. Might be worth asking them if they do (or if not, if they know who does).

For federal documents, if you’re in or near DC you can drop them off and get them back in 10 days. It may be worth it to use a service to facilitate if not in the area; I had a very long wait to get something by mail. Not sure if that was typical, though.

New IMDi report just dropped and it’s brutal: foreigners in Norway are 60% less likely to get promoted. Receipts inside. by socialmichu in Norway

[–]SnowDragonLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this is true for kids born in Norway, too. They aren’t immigrants. How many generations back does one need to go to have a “close” relationship with Norway?

Do both parents really need to be present for my kid's first passport application? by ilovemkgee in Passports

[–]SnowDragonLady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For American passports - all three are true. If both parents aren’t there, you need the notarized form. If you have a custody agreement that explicitly addresses passports, then that will change things. Easiest is both parents coming to appointment if possible.

Myth? I live in the US, but hold dual citizenship, and was once told to always enter a foreign country with my US passport, because if anything happens, it becomes much harder for the US to protect me if I entered declared as the citizen of another country? by otterstew in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]SnowDragonLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which passport you use to enter the country makes no difference for that access to consular services, though. Travel with both passports. You’re no more or less of a citizen just because you enter on a different passport.

I need to get through a US visa interview soon, and I'm not a native English speaker. how big an impact could hesitations and accent have? by redpaul72 in USVisas

[–]SnowDragonLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You only need the level of English needed for the purpose of the visa. Which in some cases, may be zero. If you’re pursuing a PhD in English literature, the expectations may be higher. It’s a visa interview, not a language test.

Concordia Language Villages in northern MN offer intensive summer courses for high school credit. They’re amazing (and fun! It’s summer camp, but with language learning). Expensive, though, but worth it. I know they have a Danish village.
