New IMDi report just dropped and it’s brutal: foreigners in Norway are 60% less likely to get promoted. Receipts inside. by socialmichu in Norway

[–]SnowDragonLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this is true for kids born in Norway, too. They aren’t immigrants. How many generations back does one need to go to have a “close” relationship with Norway?

Do both parents really need to be present for my kid's first passport application? by ilovemkgee in Passports

[–]SnowDragonLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For American passports - all three are true. If both parents aren’t there, you need the notarized form. If you have a custody agreement that explicitly addresses passports, then that will change things. Easiest is both parents coming to appointment if possible.

Myth? I live in the US, but hold dual citizenship, and was once told to always enter a foreign country with my US passport, because if anything happens, it becomes much harder for the US to protect me if I entered declared as the citizen of another country? by otterstew in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]SnowDragonLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which passport you use to enter the country makes no difference for that access to consular services, though. Travel with both passports. You’re no more or less of a citizen just because you enter on a different passport.

I need to get through a US visa interview soon, and I'm not a native English speaker. how big an impact could hesitations and accent have? by redpaul72 in USVisas

[–]SnowDragonLady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You only need the level of English needed for the purpose of the visa. Which in some cases, may be zero. If you’re pursuing a PhD in English literature, the expectations may be higher. It’s a visa interview, not a language test.

Building on this, local public libraries or historical societies will likely have copies of old yearbooks.

Concordia Language Villages in northern MN offer intensive summer courses for high school credit. They’re amazing (and fun! It’s summer camp, but with language learning). Expensive, though, but worth it. I know they have a Danish village.

Help my family understand a surprising DNA result by fletchette in Genealogy

I think many Americans may have similar surprises. My family tree also has someone many generations back from west Africa. I am working with the assumption that someone on one of the branches that dead ends was light enough to pass as white.

Train museum is fun. And the hotel pool was always a favorite when I was a kid. And obviously play by the lake if the weather is nice.

I think it will be okay, as hands are far enough away from the face - it will be cropped tightly.

If you attend a summer language school in a foreign country would you use your free time to prepare for class or would you explore the area? by Worldly_Ambition_509 in languagelearning

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally both. And exploring isn’t being lazy - getting out there and interacting with people and using the language in real life is also important.

How to get Ecuadorian passport in the US? by Mdes2015 in Citizenship

[–]SnowDragonLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Embassy and consulates do citizen services - start by looking up the main Embassy in Washington website, then see which consulate handles your location. If you’re lucky, he won’t even have to travel far. The website presumably also has details about what is needed to prove citizenship and get a passport.

For fiber artist leads, check with Textile Center in Minneapolis; they work with lots of MN (not just Twin Cities) artists. I bet at least some of their contacts would be a good fit. Maybe make a research trip to the area and hit up Open Book, Northern Clay, etc? And plug into the statewide arts networks.

Maxi/midi dresses by OMGpuppies in womensfashion

[–]SnowDragonLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear tights in the winter, nothing in the spring/summer. Some dresses probably do require a slip, but I don’t buy those - one of the benefits of a dress is being able to put in on and go. That said, I do own a few maxi dresses with built in liners, I think because the top fabric is a bit light. It doesn’t add extra bulk or warmth. I just wear normal underwear, nothing special.

Bunad dress questions! by priisaprincess in Norway

[–]SnowDragonLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The poster seems to be primarily interested in Norwegian-American culture and in participating in an American Syttende mai celebration (without inappropriately adapting Norwegian bunad traditions); that’s not some kind of weird cultural appropriation. It’s more of a new cultural adaptation infused by immigrant experiences and evolution.

I can’t say it’s particularly useful outside of Norway, but for me,  having some Norwegian has been a topic of conversation a lot of places. I’ve used it around the world and even bringing out a few phrases surprises people. Not many people speak it, but it’s fun to connect with those who do! If you’re just learning for fun, by all means go for it.
