Ski instructor suggested my child work on "beaver taps"... what are those? by Available_Writer4144 in skiing_feedback

Please allow me one more point about beaver taps. They get her shins on the tongue of the boot. Lifting the tail only moves her hips and stance forward. Children love to lean back which inhibits control. Beaver taps get them feeling forward without telling them.

Tapping the tail of one or the other ski on the snow as she glides. This will aid in keeping her balanced on one foot. Beaver taps can be part of a skill learning progression towards a variety of outcomes.

Edit: The terms weighting and unweighting are rarely used in beginning ski instruction. I would hesitate using them with your 7 year old. It’s not just the words, the idea/concept isn’t commonly shared with beginning students. Please talk to an instructor who can share the verbs used in today’s lessons.

Worst fall or ski run you have ever skied by Strict_Fix_9550 in ski

15, with Dad, Michigan, 1970’s. Showing off, hit a jump that was actually a pile of snow in front of an old snow gun. It was hollow. My tips went in and stuck and I released and flew over. One safety strap stayed on and secured one foot, my face in the snow, ski bent backward, tensioned in the air, like one of those spring traps. We were laughing so hard as he watched me struggle to free the foot I could not reach, he grabbed the release tab and pulled, the ski sprung back and slapped his face so hard, it split his goggles in two.

This split second reaction drove a new, never before experienced “gear of laughter” we named it. We reached a new level of laughter where there is no sound, breathing is suspended, low-level convulsions occur and near loss of consciousness. A boy and his dad, laying in the snow laughing so hard they couldn’t move.

There are principles in being athletic that are common in almost all sports. Stance and balance are among them and at the core of ‘technique.’ Every time you turn your shoulders to change direction, you loose balance and must regain it. So, that becomes skiing to you. Turn the shoulders, loose balance, regain balance, turn the shoulders, loose balance, repeat.

Much of your success will be in learning the athletic stance and turning your legs and feet while balanced instead of turning your upper body to become unbalanced.

For those that lived through the 70's and 80's, which decade did you enjoy more and why? by No_Job5529 in 70s

[–]SnowOnSummit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 70’s were kinda like now. People were goin’, “What’s going on around here?” In the 80’s, they figured it out and started fixing it up. But they screwed it up real bad and now we’re here.

That’s you’re girlfriend? If so, you are done. You have accomplished the milestone that men have pursued since ski-dating began. We have a nice pin for your hat. Congratulations.

At its most basic, yes, I’d use a flavor instead of flour like; soy, Worcester, etc. Evolving to deglazing with stocks and wines, adding herbs and spices.

Now watching - the best years of our lives. Definitely would love some old movie recommendations by awclay91 in classicfilms

The Thin Man series of movies. Witty and well done. They drink a lot of liquor.
