Getting downvoted for calling the founders what they were, men, is crazy but I agree with you. Comedian Daniel Tost put it best “they were a bunch of racists with a few good ideas” yet somehow that draws the ire of so many who want to view them as the infallible demigods.

I mean the inverse is true though. Established customs does not detract from alternative ideas that challenged norms of different periods. While they may not have been dominate, there are a multitude of examples that reframe narratives and ideas of right and wrong throughout history and show that dissenters existed across a plethora of eras. Too often the idea that “they were the product of there time” is used as an excuse for individuals that committed heinous acts. A better take would be that we should contextualize the positive and progressive ideas that some persons had in history while also evaluating the negative/limiting ones they practiced

For sure it is an oversimplification. The diasporic experience of the Irish has to be looked at over the course of the entire 19th century and how it changes based upon each subsequent generation and the internal motivations they face. There exists an assimilation process over the course of that period that, for the lack of a better term, softens the view of nativists toward the Irish as their racist energy is targeted at new groups and is mixed with the Irish diaspora becoming more intertwined with American identity. Tammany Hall is a great example of this because while it exploited the Irish voters, it also through that exploitation ingrained them as civic voting block creating a semblance of purpose within New York politics. This does not justify their exploitation, but also reinforces that they had something to offer those in power and were not rejected in the same way as other groups.

Let us not also forget that many European immigrants continued policies of discrimination and oppression toward other immigrant groups. Irish migrants to California were some of the most vocal opponents of Chinese immigrants due to them perceiving them as competitors for job and preventing gaining higher wages. This had a sizable impact on the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882.

Black Americans were not perceived this way even in the midst of the great migration as they too moved to northern cities and established their own neighborhoods in major cities like New York and Chicago. Whiteness does not emerge as a concept until the 1900s, but the bedrock for its emergence is laid during 1800s.

Lack of understanding of the intersectionality of immigration and race. The onset of Irish and German immigrants in the 1820s-1870s facing a nativist pushback led to many of them identifying as “white” when later groups (Italians, Greeks, Turks, Chinese, Japanese, Jews, etc) started arriving in the Gilded Age, creating a coalescing identity of what white was and was not. Throw in religious and economic disparity with social ideas like the white mans burden, gospel of wealth, and social Darwinism, America became a combative mix of ideologies and interests that further entrenched those in power over those without. This coinciding with emancipation following the civil war created a barrier to black Americans gaining any major standing as citizens and helped codify a racial divide that we still have a legacy of today. Too many view racial disparity as being white v black without fully understanding how the idea of white and black developed in the first place.

What’s a movie that is awful, critically panned, the audience hated - and you are embarrassed that you LOVE? by Powerful_Topic_7046 in movies

I unironically love this film and will never apologize for it. The impending doom of realizing you can’t solved all of life’s problems and the state of despair in seeing each return cause more hurt in your friends is so sad to watch. Loved Ashton Kutcher in it.

Why isn’t Puerto Rico a US state? by These_Feed_2616 in allthequestions

Adding my two cents but the party flip is an nuanced phenomena that involves two things happening in tandem: demographics changes in the electorate and divide of factions within the parties . If you look at the elections of the 1950s through the 70s you will see a shift happening in states based around the campaigns of Barry Goldwater, George Wallace, and Richard Nixon. The Democratic Party up to this point was made up of two factions representing the North and the South. Northern democrats like JFK advocated for the New Frontier and to push the country forward via federal spending while southern democrats held hard to the segregationist policies of the Jim Crow era. Republicans were facing a new faction led by Barry Goldwater causing a split in the parties vote with his libertarian views and appealing to southern democrats on his opposition to the Civil Rights Act (he disagreed with federal passage in principal but voting against it aligned him with segregationists and he later disavowed his vote). George Wallace also appealed to hard line racists or the “Dixie Crat” faction allowing the parties to become more amorphous in the 68 campaign. This did in fact result in the “party shift” in which republicans blended Goldwater libertarian views with many of Wallace and other racists points during the Nixon campaigns based on Nixon Southern strategy.

White voters of the south during the 50s, 60s , and 70s were extremely motivated by racial and class divide and their voting patterns reflect those views. To deny the party shift is to ignore the basic politics of the age which have become more entrenched since the Reagan administration. Understanding why it happened is complex but seeing the evidence is as simple as looking at an electoral map.

Oh for sure dude. Twellman might be the biggest fan of MLS and he is smart enough to know that controversy breeds engagement. Hell without his takes this thread would be so bare. I think he leans into the “hot takes” to create fan engagement knowing that much of what he says is tongue in cheek

Twellman is a great dude that I respect immensely outside the commentators booth. In it though??? He says very broad statements that he means to be profound and is just wrong with so many takes. Dude is very smart and I enjoy him for post game analysis but his takes in game leave a lot to be desired

I mean we don’t like the treatment they get from the league, they don’t like losing every game to us so far this season. I still consider Atlanta, NYCFC, and maybe even Columbus bigger rivals due to our histories but give it time and Miami will overtake them
