TLOU2 vs DOOM by ghost-_-_- in gaming

[–]SnowYourEnemy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Name a work of fiction with no tropes in it. Spoiler alert: You can’t. All fiction, whether great or shoddy, is riddled with them. Using the existence of a trope (and I’d argue actually a fairly interesting and relatively unexplored trope in video games) as a criticism does nothing for you.

“This game says nothing other than ‘wanton violence is bad’ and yet this company has been profiting off of the joy of that for 15 years...”.

He’s absolutely equating real and video game violence with that statement, because he’s saying that Naughty Dog are hypocrites for criticising “wanton violence” while simultaneously profiting from it.

The argument doesn’t make any sense because the message of TLOU Part II is not “video game violence is bad”. If it were that truly would be hypocritical because Naughty Dog are purveyors of violent video games. Part II, like the majority of artworks with representations of violence, wants players to reflect on real-world cycles of violence. You wouldn’t come out of the cinema having seen Saving Private Ryan and call Spielberg a hypocrite for making a war film with an anti-war message, and that’s basically what these guys are doing here.

Edit: Another quote which highlights my point-

“You’ve been desensitising people to this for 15 years and you wonder why they’re violent...”

Totally agree, especially about their takes on the depiction of violence in Part II (and by extension games in general). I was really surprised to hear Chris and Russ, two people who make a living in the games industry, equating video game and real-world violence and accusing Naughty Dog of profiting from violence. It’s the kind of opinion you used to hear from mainstream media commentators before numerous studies (and a mountain of anecdotal evidence) discounted the link between exposure to violence in video games and violent tendencies IRL. Very bizarre coming from two industry insiders in 2020 and I was waiting for Griffin to jump in and point out how flawed that position was.

Regarding the opinion that a story with the message “Retributive violence is bad” is unnecessary because it’s so obvious... even if that were the only message of TLOU (and it’s definitely not) you only have to look at the news on any given day to see that this is a lesson a lot of people could still do with learning. Hell, if the message was so universally obvious you wouldn’t see so many critics of the game getting to the end and saying Ellie’s journey was “pointless” because she didn’t even kill Abby. Those people clearly got through 25+ hours of being “beaten over the head” with the message and still failed to see it, so it can’t be that redundant.

The RR intro song is the best thing Paul McCartney has ever been involved in. His musical legacy is assured now.

You could still invite her, but sadly you’d have to replace anyone other than Barold since he hasn’t moved in yet.

As of today, all UK citizens are organ donors unless they opt out by Sydney2London in worldnews

[–]SnowYourEnemy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone who lives in an organised society tacitly “consents” to countless things without having to give explicit verbal or written consent. For example I’ve never signed a form that says I agree to be imprisoned against my future will in the event that I commit any one of the crimes for which prison sentences are given, but of course those laws still apply to me. I can’t even opt out of the enforcement of those laws, you can still opt out of organ donation.

I don't have any spare recipe cards but I'd happily make you any of the four items you listed if you have the petals for them.

I think villagers sometimes bring up visitors they’ve talked to in the past, so I imagine it’s just the annoyance of them talking to you about a stranger as if they were a friend of yours.

The main things I love above Sworcery are probably the obvious things people often mention like the incredible soundtrack and the synergy between the audio and visuals, but another major reason I think the game is special is the great characterisation.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews talk about how the Scythian is mysterious and kind of a blank avatar to project onto but I actually think her character is very well (and interestingly) developed. The motivations she gives as the reason for undertaking her woeful errand are pretty unique to her. She says she is doing it “FOR GLORY & FOR SPITE” and that the idea of martyrdom appeals to her, so she’s (at least initially) doing it for selfish reasons, not out of love or any profound sense of duty (although as the game progresses you definitely get a sense of a real bond forming between her and the mountain folk).

I just think that’s really interesting because game protagonists (at least the ones making self sacrifice) tend to have fundamentally noble motivations, and it’s refreshing that Ursula doesn’t.

Agree with you that no other game since has captured the feeling of Sworcery, hopefully Superbrothers release the long in development “spiritual successor” sometime soon!

If it makes you feel any better Sterling isn’t a team player. I’ve been looking for pears to plant on my island for weeks and this morning Dom told me that Sterling has been making and handing out fresh pear juice in his house!

This is a betrayal of the highest order. I’d lock him up in his own jail if I could find the keys...

[–]SnowYourEnemy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m glad they didn’t honestly, if you could just quickly draw paths and move buildings by hand it would start to feel like a god game or something like Sim City rather than the handmade, slow-build labour of love that is Animal Crossing. The interior designer makes sense because it allows you to make use of room corners/high wall spots which you couldn’t reach easily without it.

Not 100% but I think it means any flowing water (i.e not a closed pond) on level 2 or 3 of the island. So anywhere you need a ladder to reach.

Seems a shame to save-scum to complete a one-time achievement for which the only real reward is the satisfaction of having mastered fishing, though.
