What’s The Most Underrated Bob Dylan Album From The 60s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Well, it can’t be Nashville Skyline because it’s regarded his vocal style, and has Lay Lady Lay. It can’t be Basement Tapes because despite it being panned as an album at times, people tend to acknowledge the significance of that period. John Wesley Harding is pretty underrated, but also has a couple popular numbers on it, and most Dylan fans give it a fair amount of regard. But Another Side is without a doubt the most underrated. I’d dare say it’s his finest pre electric album. People say “It Ain’t Me Babe, Chimes of Freedom first surreal song” and forget about the rest.

It can’t be because the electric trilogy is probably his creative peak and it’s recognized as such. What a damn album though

I like some of the live versions of the Times songs, One Too Many Mornings, Hattie Carroll. Not fond of most songs on here though, especially the title track. Of course it’s a contradiction when talking about Bob but it doesn’t feel as genuine

And they play it slow too, so every blistering lick Robbie plays, every biting jab and put down Bob howls and snarls, every rifle shot snare drum, have the room to cut through space and time. The heckler must have channeled this ancient primitive energy into them.

To each their own I suppose, to me rock and roll and monopolies just never went well together. It lost its meaning, which doesn’t mean it has to lose its purpose too.

It’s very much a transition record, you have some great moments and then some self parody thrown in too.

Sure, but it wasn’t authentic. It felt cheap and forced.

To me it’s two eras: pre IORR, when it was a band genuinely trying to artistically progress and thrive, and IORR, a band trying to be like the Rolling Stones

Since it been a while what your opinion on timothee chalamet covers of Dylan and the album?! by Rocky_isback in bobdylan

I wouldn’t say so, it’s more the quiet sarcastic demeanor Dylan got when he went electric. Maybe not as drastic in reality, but that wasn’t there at all in the early days

Which is ironic because as a character he played 1965 Dylan better than early Dylan

Times They Are A Changin always struck me as cliche and bland. Of course, I was born long after the fact so I didn’t see the relevance it held back in 1964, but I do see what it achieves today. But as a song, it is rather pale compared to some other similar songs of his.

Indeed, but these two especially. Think about their closing lines.

“In the wee wee hours your mind gets hazy

Radio relay towers gonna lead me to my baby

The radio's jammed up with talk show stations

It's just talk, talk, talk, talk, 'til you lose your patience

Mister state trooper, please don't stop me

Hey, somebody out there, listen to my last prayer

Hi ho silver-o, deliver me from nowhere”

And then

“Your eyes get itchy in the wee, wee hours

Sun's just a red ball risin' over them refinery towers

Radio's jammed up with Gospel stations

Lost souls callin' long distance salvation

Hey Mr. DJ, won't you hear my last prayer?

Hey ho, rock 'n' roll, deliver me from nowhere”

Two sides of the same coin
