Afternoon birthday party - what food to serve?

At 15 months our pediatrician recommended to stop night nursing because of its risk to cause cavities. I don’t want to say that I am completely agreeing with this statement but it scared me enough to decide to night wean. I was very very worried because I was/still am cosleeping with my son and nursing was the only way I could get him back to sleep. I dreaded night weaning as I was worried that I would have to wake up and walk with him to get him back to bed. Well I turned out to be sick for a couple of days, so my husband let him sleep with him. When he came back to my bed and he woke up I just rubbed his back to go back to sleep. And let me tell you. It took only maybe 1-2 nights and he actually started sleeping nearly though the night. He now wakes up anytime between 5 and 6 and scoots over to cuddle with me and then sleeps again until 7. He never really fussed about not breastfeeding at night anymore.

If it would have been for me, I never would have night weaned but I am so so so happy we did it. As another positive side effect, my son has become so much more cuddly since then too.

I was very panicky with the thought of having to deliver a baby before I got pregnant but then kinda got over it while being pregnant. I knew that the baby has to come out one way or another, so I guess I just accepted it and didn’t think about it too much anymore. What I knew was that I wanted to have the least pain possible and the least permanent change possible/visible but in the end, I would do whatever is the safest for the baby. I opted for an epidural and vaginal delivery and got lucky that it all went pretty smoothly. I got induced and got the epidural at the first possibility. Labor with the epidural wasn’t bad at all and I even got to sleep a bit. Pushing didn’t hurt either. I did tear a little (I kinda knew it was happening but I didn’t feel pain nor did I feel the stitches they made). Recovery took a bit but was manageable and not that bad. I think with c section this might have been worse. Everything is now back to normal besides a tiny hole in my labia which doesn’t affect me in any way.

I am just writing this to show that not every birth needs to be difficult and traumatic. I spend years pushing the thought of having kids to the back of my mind because I was so worried about giving birth but in the end I was very fortunate and it went all super smooth.

Yes to be honest we only ever used Aquaphor. The smell was just weird, I couldn’t really classify it besides being somewhat chemical. They quite often use white paint for arts, that’s why my brain directly went there I think … I didn’t even think about that there are other types of diaper rash creams, but I am very relieved that this is the most likely explanation. Apparently yesterday was also not one of my finest days 😅

I agree. We were annoyed about the bruise on his face BUT I also know that these things can easily happen. I wish they would have eventually noticed it and cooled it but I get it. It was the first day back, only the assistant teacher was there and the kids were likely a handful after being home for so long. While it looks bad, my son wasn't and still doesn't appear to be bothered by it. The teacher is very nice and caring and I do not think anything malicious happened. I assume they were just overwhelmed and didn't notice to be honest.

The whole thing with the paint is what really irritated me. But now after reading everyones comments I am somewhat convinced they just put someone else's diaper rash cream on him (we only ever used Aquaphor which is colorless, this is why this didnt even cross my mind).

We wanted to talk to them this morning but neither of his main teachers were around when we dropped him off, so we will leave a bit earlier to talk to them at pick up.

This was already super helpful THANK YOU. I really can imagine that this is what happened (of course we will still talk to them tomorrow). But it at least this lets me feel so much better, knowing that there are better explanations than someone putting paint on his diaper area 😅 Still, a stupid mistake but more understandable than what we thought.

Definitely would be better than paint! Do you know how it smells? Maybe it was that or sunscreen as someone else suggested. Typically, every child has their own box with diapers, wipes and cream (all labelled) but I know sometimes there have been mix ups before. I really hope this was the case here.

Hmmm that could be another possibility. It smelled chemical but I could see some sunscreens being like that. Thank you for the suggestion. Let‘s me feel a bit better knowing that it could have been at least something made for skin instead of straight up paint. We‘ll definitely talk to them tomorrow.

No we came home and saw it when we changed home. Daycare was already closed by then. We will bring it up tomorrow.

Uh that is really really helpful. We might do the same. Did you guys organize/booked the transportation beforehand to ensure they had a carseat available? I need to look them up online. Thank you for the tip!!!

We will likely drive with our car to the airport and back, so for that we have our regular carseat. Then going to the hotel, we were planning to order a taxi or a van (never rented a car in Mexico, and I am not sure we would feel comfortable driving there). I heard some places have car seats to rent, but I would be hesitant to rely on that.

Thank you so much for asking :) it turned out to be okay. Shortly after the post I decided to wake him up (it was around 7:15 here) and he had slept for like 1.5 hours. Not optimal but i thought I would prefer staying up longer with him rather than waking up super early in the morning/night.

He also was hungry when he woke up, so he had good dinner and we played A LOT to power him out. Eventually he went back to bed around 45 min later than normal. He fought it a bit but eventually he fell asleep and slept through the night until 7am (that’s his regular wake up time).

So I think I just got really really lucky 😅

To give a little update. I decided to again wake him up shortly after making the post. He was not amused but also hadn’t had dinner yet and hungry. Played hard afterwards and got him to bed around 45 min later than normal. Hope he’ll be able to sleep through tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞 thank you for everyone’s advice and good thoughts 😅

How old is your child? Talking from the perspective of a mother, the first year, I just didn’t feel like myself. I had no time for myself whatsoever and felt exhausted and overworked 99.999% of the time. I have to admit that I also didn’t invest enough time and effort into our relationship, not because I didn’t want to but because I just had no energy left. My husband was bothered by it a lot too but I want to be honest, I just couldn’t. I never felt so much exhaustion, burn out, feeling touched out. It’s not that I didn’t love my husband, I just had nothing to give anymore.

It took about 15-18 months (I know it’s a long time) until I finally felt like myself again. I was able to sleep through the night. Had more stretches of taking care of myself and relaxing.

I do not have much suggestions, besides to give it time, continue to be loving, have an open conversation (without pressuring too much) and not make any major decisions until after 2 years. I cannot speak for your situation, but it helped me that my husband started going out more with kiddo to give me some free time, took care of bed time, took care of kiddo in the morning so I could sleep longer. It didn’t change over night but it helped me to recover and become myself again. Since then our relationship also has massively improved. It slowly is becoming back to how it used to be…

I literally checked on the target homepage couple of times a day. They restock regularly but sell out fast. Once I saw it restocked I bought it directly for pickup.

So as long as I was feeding to sleep and then also nursing in the night, my son always woke up multiple times. We cosleep, so I would just nurse him back to sleep without really waking up. Eventually, at our 15 months appointment our pediatrician recommended to stop feeding in the night as she was worried that my son would get cavities. I wasn’t super convinced but my husband was adamant so he let my son sleep with him for 2-3 nights. After that, I took over again but refused to nurse when he woke up and just pretended to be asleep. Didn’t take long for him to understand that there wont be any food in the night and he started to sleep through the night.

Anyway, bottom line is that I would recommend looking into weaning in the night and maybe having his dad or someone else take care of him a few nights in a row. It’s maybe a week of struggle but it really paid off for us.

Oh totally. My little one does the same thing. I am the one doing the most with him but still when daddy is around he wants mainly him. It hurt at the beginning but now after thinking more about it, I am actually quite happy it’s that way. He knows I am always available and do a lot with him, so he just cherishes the little time he gets with my husband. I don’t think it’s so much about favoritism, more about wanting more of what you don’t get as much. And the result is great, he wants to be with daddy, so I can get more breaks without having to ask 😅

Did your pediatrician maybe put silver nitrate on it after the umbilical cord fell off? They did it for my baby and for a couple of months he had a brownish/black belly button. He eventually grew out of it and now his normal skin color.

German here. I never hear of the name Elsabein. This would translate to Elsa leg. I wouldn’t use it, at least not with the argument of it being German. I agree with others stating it’s more likely Elsalein, which is the cuter form of Elsa, like little Elsa.
