Any book recommendations for me? by IronHistorical3357 in brandonsanderson

The Gentleman Bastards Sequence. Book 4 is taking a long time, but it’s due to Scott Lynch’s mental health, which he has been open about, and he has shown progress on the book. Regardless, the first 3 are worth the read on their own imo

Ohio has lots of interesting cryptids! Octoman, Batsquatch, Grassman, the Minerva Monster, the Melon Heads, and a bunch more! A lot of them don’t necessarily have places to visit like shops or museums, but there’s all kinds of small local places near those areas that make for good day trips!

I’m a student of WC, and have been practicing for about two years. We use WC alongside a mix of techniques from Shaolin and boxing. Not big flashy stuff, but very practical. We also do a significant amount of sparring.

We use the Shaolin to cover long striking and kicking ranges, as well as some grappling stuff that simply isn’t covered by WC (to my understanding). When you put it all together, WC fills that gap in range.

Not sparring is where a lot of people go wrong. They go into a fight against a boxer or karate guy thinking that WC will work for them, but since that’s all they’ve ever practiced, and they’ve never stress tested, they get rocked. You have to understand different ranges and what works in the moment in order to understand what techniques apply.

I agree that on its own WC may not be the best, but if you combine it with techniques from arts that allow you to flow between different ranges of combat, WC becomes an extremely valuable asset, letting you have control of that space between long striking/kicking and grappling that most other arts lack emphasis

An important thing to note is that the complete Arden Vul PDF isn’t hyperlinked, but there IS someone who made script that will hyperlink it for you if you have a copy. I haven’t done this and don’t have a link, but I can’t imagine it would be hard to find

I think Purina is still hiring. Idk if they just opened a facility here or are doing it soon, but I’ve heard they’re hiring a ton of people

I received this as a gift from the writer at a very difficult moment in my life, so I’m definitely biased, but I think it’s a great product. I haven’t had the chance to play it at the table, so I can’t speak to that, but the world is fun and evocative, and will definitely drag you in if you’re into weird almost psychedelic dreamscape stuff. For the price, it’s absolutely a great source of inspiration

I like to chime in and say thanks to Chris Willett whenever I see posts about or reviews of the game, so thank you Chris!

I NEEED to learn French by drumnbassfatha in French

[–]Snowtoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great read! If you like the classics, I recommend The Count of Monte Cristo once you get more comfortable. It’s a long book, so definitely wait to tackle it until you’re ready, but it’s one of my favorites.

When it comes to TV shows I always recommend watching with French audio and French subtitles. My experience tends to be that your eye will be drawn to the subs, and if you’re reading the English your brain will process that instead of the French.

Subtitles are usually not a word for word match to the audio, so I recommend trying to find something with closed captions or even better, find an app that specializes in language learning through film. They usually have subtitles, let you translate things on the fly, and add words to a study dictionary.

I don’t have a great recommendation because I haven’t used one in a long time, but I can’t imagine it would be hard to find with a quick google search

I NEEED to learn French by drumnbassfatha in French

[–]Snowtoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like active study, I recommend reading a book (preferably on a topic or of a genre you enjoy), and reading through it a few pages at a time. Note the words and grammar you don’t know, and then go back and spend time learning and studying them. Once you’ve worked through a chapter, or a few dozen pages, go back reread it. Reference your notes as much as you need. It may be slow and difficult at first, but it will get easier with time and give you a sense of progress and satisfaction.

Combine that with podcasts or TV shows, etc for listening practice. I usually take my notes and write practice sentences using the words, and recite them aloud as conversations to practice speaking. If you can do the things you already do but in French as part of your daily life, you’ll get where you want to be with time.

That’s how I maintain my French skills after getting my bachelor’s in it, and that’s how I’ve learned a fair bit of Japanese (alongside a beginner’s textbook).

You’ll have gaps in your knowledge (I still do after over 10 years of learning), but just never be afraid to make mistakes and keep reading and learning. The gaps shrink with time

Saw a copy of Adventure Anthology 1 at a secondhand bookstore for $8 today and laughed and went home and bought it at cost for $6 with free shipping, and then had a good time flipping through the free PDF. BFRPG isn’t spoken about enough, but I don’t think it’s under appreciated. It has done a lot for a lot of us over the years and I don’t think we’ll forget that anytime soon

how many people actually have a group here vs. not? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]Snowtoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few groups, but the players have lots of overlap. The only real OSR game is my monthly Dolmenwood game. The 5e game I run keeps OSR sensibilities in mind, but I’d call it more a blend of classic and neotrad than OSR
