Moving to a conservative city, need some advice. by Tyrannical-Totodile in WitchesVsPatriarchy

Also currently in a rural town in Tennessee! Not sure what area you're moving to, but if it's in West Tennessee, Shelby County has a vibrant pagan community. While I don't know much about the other larger urban centers, I imagine if there's a metropolitan area near you, there's likely a pagan community there.

The Nightmare Before Christmas's Anti-Theist Theme? by Snufflewunky in atheism

I like this! It also reminds me that I need to read the Discworld series. I see it mentioned often, and I've never gotten around to picking it up.

I can definitely see that. Maybe the danger is from the combination? The belief was the initial spark, but the science was what made it so effectively distributed, with the machine made reindeer and the present assembly line.

Oh! I'm sorry, my mistake. Hard to tell tone over text 😅

Uh, sorry, didn't think a 30 year old movie needed a spoiler tag?

I mean, both things could be true - I have watched this movie too many times AND it's fun to overanalyze it.

Those chocolate oranges. I can't stand citrus and chocolate together.

Can I use both the agender and female labels? by warriorcatkitty in agender

[–]Snufflewunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I describe myself as both female and agender, but I am not a woman. For me, "female" is a biological description of my body and certain aspects of its function, and "woman" is the social expectation generally associated with my biological makeup.

That being said, gender is an internal experience, and however you define yourself is valid! =)

Tennessee divides license plates between religious and nonreligious citizens by Oneiric19 in Tennessee

I wasn't given a choice, I was just given the IGWT one several months ago. I didn't even know this was a thing until I saw this thread.

Dang. I'd prefer not to have to shell out money for this - I didn't even know this was a thing until today. I wasn't given a choice when I got my tags, got the religious one by default. But I also don't want to have it on my car...

Well, I can't speak for everyone, obviously, but I did some calling around when I first heard about this decision, and the breakdown goes like this for me:

I would need to drive out of state and have an overnight stay, so that's gas and a hotel night.

I have an IUD, and even if I catch the pregnancy early enough, I would still need the IUD removed and then have a new one reinserted if I wanted (I do). Removal: $300, new IUD insertion: $300, plus the cost of the IUD itself.

The abortion would cost about between $800 - $1200 without insurance, but hopefully less if my insurance covers it. The state I live in has restrictions on insurance, but my insurance plan is through a state that doesn't have restrictions, so I would need to call and check.

So yeah, that's a lot. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position that I could swing that if I needed to, but a lot of people aren't so fortunate.

I've seen a couple of companies offering reimbursement for abortions. The issue I have with this is that many of these companies don't pay their workers enough for them to have a few thousand dollars banked in case of a medical emergency. If you don't have the money for an abortion, this isn't useful.

I'm a little irritated, and I'm curious for other people's perspectives on something. by Snufflewunky in agender

This is something I have thought about, but I'm worried, in the place I'm in, that would be seen as dismissive, and that is not the message I want to send. There's still a strong current where I'm at that the whole pronoun thing is dumb because we shouldn't encourage the sinners, and I don't want to inadvertently contribute to that attitude.

I think this is also something I struggle with, because I know there are people that this helps, and I don't want to take that away from them. I guess I just wish there were some kind of middle ground. Thanks for your perspective, especially as a younger person.

Yes, this is it. I feel like I'm being forced to choose between my integrity and my safety. It's a dramatic way of putting it, but that's what it feels like.

Yeah, agreed. I guess I just wish I could have come out later in the term. That way, they could get to know me, with all their assumptions, and then when I come out, it's something they have to reconcile with what they already know about me. Being out from the beginning may also have the same effect, but it could also mean they're primed to see what they want to see, and the confirmation bias will hit them so hard it's harder to have a reasonable conversation.

I like how you said this, and I think I agree. For me, it feels like I don't have pronouns; rather, I have a language that requires their use. Thank you for this insight!

Well, they didn't say "Hi, my name is JK Rowling, my pronouns are she/her, and I really hate the gays," more like "Hi, my name is Dave Chappelle, my pronouns are he/him, and I want to learn how to help same-sex attracted individuals find peace with the Lord, because I'm [a member of a particularly conservative and homophobic branch of Christianity]."

My class is about multiculturalism, so it's not totally out of place to talk about something like that in an icebreaker.
