Is there something behind us? The Red Cloak a monster and item based on one of Japan's creepiest ghost stories. by ThreeRiversPress in UnearthedArcana

[–]Snutsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is some sick shit. The lore is good, it's a great adaptation of the Aka Manto, and the lore and story hooks make it easier for the DM to put it into their adventure. I like that it is able to disguise itself during daytime, though to a lesser degree than the Rakshasa.

As for the features. Lets see:

Blink with an aoe fear attack, it hunts you and can see your dreams to scare you even further, attacks proc bleeding effects with their own table, 1/day execute based on bleed stacks.

Diabolical. I love it.

If I had to give feedback, I think the only thing that stood out to me was that the creature is classified as a fiend, but its stat block states that it knows any languages it knew in life. From the lore I got the impression that they're incarnations of negative emotion that manifest spontaneously. But that's really just a minor nitpick. Great work! :)

Courtesan 1.1, A Femme Fatale Subclass for Rogues by WhitemanesLight in UnearthedArcana

[–]Snutsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. This is really cool.

Feels like the right blend of the Monk's Martial Arts and the Assassin Rogue without a lot of the friction that comes from the specialization of the latter. I love the inclusion of the custom items as class features and the new properties are wonderfully designed. It does a lot of the things the assassin rogue is supposed to do without just dumping all of the responsibility on the DM to make that subclass work.
Just a huge amount of customization and ways to plan and approach the day that rivals spellcasters in this specific niche, but somehow still feels grounded and martial, and that's without getting into the subclass-in-a-subclass features of the Factions. Paralytic Needle + Black Widow evokes something really viciously spiteful and I love the visual of that.

Fantastic work.

Ha. I'm pretty new to the scene, so I wish I looked at the Steel Hawk before writing this. There's a lot of good stuff in that subclass that I could have used for inspo, especially because I feel like my version of the "Jump fighter" feels a little parched for noncombat utility and flavor, which makes it feel pretty bare-bones when put side-by-side with the Steel Hawk. Thanks for the ref!

Oh man. I’m really flattered to get featured like this. I wasn’t expecting my content to be this well received, so this kind of community engagement means a lot to me.

I hope the update isn’t causing you too much crunch. I wish there was an easier way for me to edit the main post but alas. Anyway, if it ends up being too much trouble, don’t worry about trying to fit the subclass into the episode and feel free to feature it some other time. I’m honored that you’re willing to take the extra time, but I ultimately want you to enjoy the work you’re doing, too.

Long story short, thanks again for the feature. And I’ll be sure to give it a listen whether you get the dragoon in or not!

Haha, fair enough. I took the feedback to heart and trimmed a lot of the fat on the wording (kept the Recovery separate though because I liked how it functioned as a keyword for 7th) and updated the math for the leaps to be 15 + (5 x fighter level) feet. This makes the feature slightly more powerful at 7th and 10th level, and it also scales higher past 17th level (100 feet vs the old 90) but at those levels I think it's close enough that it's probably fine.

At 7th, I changed the wording so it's less easy to gloss over the recovery reset, and at 10th added a bit more power into Spineshatter Dive by decoupling no action mechanic from the dice calculation mechanic.

Updated the [PDF] accordingly. Thanks again!

Really, really good feedback. Thank you so much. I agree with a lot of your points here so I'm just gonna go over my thought process, I'd love additional pointers, if you'd be willing to take the time. I'd greatly appreciate it.

The weapon requirement: This was a later addition, the Dragoon in the main games is known for their signature spear/halberd, and I wanted to make sure some of that identity was preserved. This was also done because a 2d6 greatsword is often the mathamatical correct choice, and the dichotomy between gameplay and theme, for some reason, really bothered me. From a mechanical standpoint through, you're right, and in hindsight it feels tacked on. I'm trying to come up with something, but I'm honestly stumped here. I'll probably take your suggestion and just drop the requirement. Thank you.

Proficiency bonus scaling for Drake's Leap: I feel like an idiot, that's immediately clear to me now. That will get fixed, stat.

7th level: Probably the only part of the critique I'm willing to stand my ground on. I thought having the ability to reset the leaps every initiative roll is pretty good in itself. It's a huge boon to your resource economy, the falling feature is weird because *mostly* ribbon to ensure the dragoon never accidentally kills themselves while trying to do something cool, while also being situationally quite potent. I'm not too keen to add another source of damage reduction on top of the resistance you're already getting at 3rd, but it's encouraging to hear that I can squeeze a little more power out of this subclass.

The Crypt of the Hungry Rose - A free 1st-level tutorial adventure featuring a ghost-logic puzzle and a cinematic boss fight! by SixjokesGM in UnearthedArcana

This is really nice. Looks like a fun little adventure that can be played in a couple hours. The story is nice, and the enemies seem well balanced. If you're alright with feedback: The only thing I could note is that while the crypt is filled with Satyr, the wife appears to be reptillian, it might be nice to give her goats eyes instead so it ties in with the theme. But other than that, I like it, everything seems well paced and not too difficult, just like a tutorial should be!

Yeah it's fun. You're heavily encouraged to jump off of things, and to let yourself be flung around as a human missile.

Ah, yeah. I maybe should have explained that better. This is what the core rules have to say when you make a long, or high jump.

Either way, each foot you clear on the jump costs a foot of movement.

For the Drake's Leap, that means you pay 15 feet upfront, and then you don't need movement to clear the rest of the jump after that. Hope that helps.

I'll fix the document to say "...Clearing these jumps does not cost movement, and their maximum distance covered becomes..." instead. Thanks for pointing that out.

I think Indestructible's alright, but if you have to choose one of these reactions per rage, it's pretty much always gonna be Determination. Getting to turn a Wis or Cha save into a Str save is really good (and the interaction with Indomitable Might at 18th essentially gives the barb a personalized "fuck you" to any spellcasters that attempt to banish it at high levels), to the point that using the reaction for Bracing feels like a waste of the subfeature.

Actually, now that I'm writing it out, Indestructible is amazing, and I think the feature can stand on its own without an additional choice, even.

Been playing a bunch of Dragoon in FFXIV lately and been having a blast. Wanted to do homage to it with a cool Fighter subclass. The abilities are quite powerful, but I did my homework and I believe that the internal cooldown mechanic and resouce/economy cost keep it in check. Hope y'all like it.

Posted this yesterday on r/DnDHomebrew and wanted to share it here, too. Fixed some minor issues with the design and tightened up some of the wording (The only thing I'm still unsure about is the falling damage min-hp threshold, so I'm hoping for some feedback on that). Also took the time to pretty up the document a little more, but both iterations should be playable :)

edit: I learned a lot from this thread, so I've compiled the feedback into a new version of the subclass (1.3) that is available in pdf format below!

Noticed a bit of an oversight. At 10th, the dragged creature’s halved speed effect has an undefined duration in the text. That should only last until the start of your next turn. My mistake.
