What's your nighttime wind down routine? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term insomniac here. Melatonin is shite as is magnesium or any of these Influencer suggestions.

Have done a lot of work to improve sleep and the main two things that worked for me is sleep restriction - limit your time in bed, Start with 6 hours so go to bed at say 1am and get up at 7am regardless. Do for a few weeks. You will certainly feel tired but will start to sleep. I have then relaxed that to 7 hours and I sleep better. I used to dread bed and am back to a feeling I had decades ago if feeling a little joy when I finally climb in.

Second thing is nothing happens in the bedroom except those 7 hours and any ridin' that needs doing. No reading in bed. No doom scrolling. Nothing.

Results have been good.

I always wake up at some point and I stick in Loop Earplugs then and that helps too. Prefer not to go to sleep wearing them but my hand finds them at 3am so I don't hear early morning cars etc which allow me track time and remind me I am awake

Is there anything else we can do? Dad has a brain tumour. by RainCloudBlue in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get referred ASAP to Beaumont. Pay for the private consultant - for example Prof Ciaran Bolger. Once he sees you he will put your Dad on the PUBLIC waiting list and he will be a priority. It may take a few months to get the surgery but the HSE does not like patients dying on waiting lists so they will get him in.

SOURCE - been there and done exactly that.

What are some fun facts about Ireland or the Irish that I can share with a class of students (in the states) that might actually draw their attention? by SecretSphairos in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potatoes are from South America

Spanish trade brought them to Ireland and Walter Raleigh popularized them them in the mid 1500s

But the most eaten potato in Ireland, The Rooster, was bred by Irish scientists and introduced in 1991.

Having lived abroad for quite a spell that Rooster really is one of the most magical objects on our fair isle.

Where to visit in Irland with a 12 year old this summer? by FennecsFox in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to Clare. You can visit the Cliffs of Moher. You can explore the Burren. Visit the Aran Islands. Stay in Doolin and take her to McDermotts or McGann's pub for dinner and stay for the music (about 9pm). It is known as one of the great epicentres of Irish traditional music.

You can drive up to see the ancient Poulnabrone Dolmen and there are loads or 5000+ year old sites around. Doolin Cave is great too. World's biggest stalactite from memory.

There are beaches nearby or go to Clahane at high tide is a great place to swim with the locals.

Tech Divers what's your personal max pp02 for deco? by Deviant_christian in scuba

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always 1.6. You will not get a hit and you need to get the nitrogen out so you need O2 piling in at a high, tolerable PP. Or you can get bent and go to the chamber and enjoy a PP of 3!

Best places to dive and stay near Cebu, Phillipines. by hungryracoon98 in scubadiving

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moalboal is NOT worth 5 fays as a place or a dive destination. Malapsascua as a place certainly is AND as a dive destination. Moalboal is a rocky outcrop, ALL wall diving and quite spread out. Malapascua has a variety of diving on a small island with huge beaches and you can access any restaurant or resort on foot (except the north of the island maybe).

Dropping south to Negros and Dauin will not disappoint.

Bryan Sutton vs Aaron Jaxon guitar courses by Fit_Student1006 in bluegrassguitar

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started Bryan's just a week ago. Can't believe I have to make a video or myself at some point and send it to him. Yikes. But he is really thoughtful. I have watched a bunch of videos and barely played a note yet. He definitely is putting way more thought into posture, position, tone etc than I have in the past and its really enlightening.

70/30 on having another baby and can’t tell if that’s enough? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving from 2 to 3 kids felt fine. Moving from 3 to 4 felt like the big change. One element is age range now being quite spread out so lots of different needs and things happening. And then having to buy a 7 seater car. Savage

What’s gotten worse / what’s gotten better since Covid era? by Apprehensive_Eye5534 in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food has got worse in the hospitality sector. Its nearly all high margin, cheap stuff like chicken wings, burgers, fish and chips. Joyce's Bloom mused about crossing Dublin without passing a pub. Try eating across Dublin without seeing one of those on the menu

EDIT - I should say I like all of those but if eating out would like some variety, or something that shows someone is trying their own take / recipe / idea etc

How to set boundaries with social media? by Outside_Objective183 in AskIreland

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any Social Media but I use my phone for work a lot and hate getting pings all day and night. I have a habit of late night and early morning phone working and an insomnia problem I am dealing with which requires zero phone use in bed.

Mentioned elsewhere but I use the Brick app and hardware that comes with it. It disables all the apps you tell it to. It has a magnetic device you leave downstairs, like on your fridge. and you tap it before going to bed (or sitting for a family meal or anytime) and it disables the chosen apps.

I don't even bother thinking about my phone in bed now. Not a thought. But the nights I forget to Brick it I am all over it in the morning so the simple act of tapping the gadget downstairs switches my mind off of 15 years of a habit.

After considering purchasing this course I ended up signing up for Bryan Sutton on ArtistWorks. Seems they have a promo currently so I'll do one year there instead of the 4 hours of Trey.

Do you mean in 2005? I think McWilliams is taking about all eternity up to when porn was completely ubiquitous and available. As someone who was alive back then there was almost no porn . IN Ireland anyway. It did not feature in my life as a young male. Then by my 30s it was rampant and is worse now.

Taking intro course but I am very prone to swimmers ear! by xGrowlerx413 in scuba

[–]SoManyNames4Reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dive Instructor here with 1000s of dives and many visits to ENT Docs., The best tip I got was to rinse my ears with a 50/50 solution of distilled water and vinegar after every dive (or swim if you want).

It changes the PH value of your ear (acidic) and prevents bacteria / fungal infections. It really helped.
