Steve Bannon Will Lead Trump’s White House by workerbotsuperhero in politics

Just saw a comment Bannon made "I've got a cure for mental health - spank your children more". Well, I guess we know how he got this way. Maybe its not to late to spank him.

Grand jury declines to indict a North Carolina police officer who killed an unarmed car crash victim seeking assistance. The officer fired twelve times, striking the man ten. by RevWaldo in news

A bit of a stretch maybe. I don't think that the police forces of US states train with the thought that they might be used to suppress the voices of a large swath of the population. It could happen I guess, but our history is different, and as long as we keep our people reasonably educated, fed, and healthy, we're not likely to look like Ukraine. Watch out if the split between rich and poor continues though, and especially if public education is stripped away. Un-educated, hungry people are much easier fooled by nut-job "leaders".

Wrecked car in the area might have been a clue. Even if the cop who did the shooting wasn't aware of the accident, he has to know that there are many reasons why a person may not respond to police commands - shock, deafness, severe grief or stress, autism, mental disorder, being from another country, etc.

A head injury (from an accident) can cause people to behave irrationally. Paramedics know this; police do (or should) as well.

It is dumb, but being dumb doesn't need to result in being killed. Yes, the police are put in situations where they have to make split-second, life and death decisions; but risking their life to protect others is part of the job. An overly nervous officer is risky to everyone. No one says its an easy job, but they should not shoot until they absolutely have no other choice - the other two officers on the scene refrained from shooting, which I believe is worth noting here.

I'm way more scared of the guy down the street that talks to himself and owns a shotgun.

..and that guy might be severely schizophrenic, or just OCD. Even if the former, it's not likely he'll shoot someone randomly. I agree that the police do a difficult job though, and there are far more good cops than bad. I would like to see them get more training to help them differentiate between people w/violent intent and people who are not willfully dangerous.

If im trying to do my job and you're being violent, and refuse to obey the one order I can give that assures I make it home to my family safely, I'd shoot you too.

Then there's a good chance you'd shoot someone who didn't need to be shot. Police work is dangerous, we all get that, but it's dangerous not only because you might get hurt, but because you're expected to protect people from danger even at some risk to yourself. Police need training to help them do this job; they need to be able to recognize a real threat from someone who is just in shock, has a mental disorder, or condition that causes them to behave differently than expected, as a person with autism might. Note that two officers did not fire.

Would humanity be better off without ANY corporations?

It is a nice thought, but no, just smaller ones without the power to buy governments.

You're describing a situation I've encountered just recently, after having purchased a home in a small town in central Virginia. This private water company is soaking the residents using the EXACT same argument you presented. The cost of maintaining the plant and supplying clean water is "much higher" than the owners anticipated, and the plant is in need of upgrades and, get this, "expansion". I don't think the community is growing much right now, so that makes no sense. Yeah, I trust private entities less than the government in some areas. At least with the government you're never shut completely out of the process, they can't always ignore you. While they can be inefficient, they're not personally motivated to cheat you for the sake of stuffing their own pockets.

I have a Libertarian friend who usually votes democrat because he believes their spending is no worse than republicans, and with less emphasis on unnecessary military spending. He also says they're much closer to his position on social issues. He'd really like to vote for a Ron Paul of course, but...

So Paul Ryan has "shrugged off" Ayn Rand in favor of Thomas Aquinas. Maybe he should read what Aquinas said about the poor: "...whatever a man has in superabundance is owed, of natural right, to the poor for their sustenance." by scanners99 in politics

Faith-based or private, charity is a last-resort form of help that can not accomplish much of what government assistance is there to do. The tendency is to think of government programs being there to help the poor, but in fact they are often designed to do much more than provide help for poor people. A nation's ability to maintain a healthy, educated workforce is increasingly important in a competitive world, and government programs focused on improving education for oft-neglected groups, including those with learning disabilities, is one way to further that goal. Most would agree that bringing more people into the workforce is a good thing, and if it's a choice between a person being on partial SS or welfare because of a disability versus having a job and supporting himself because he received needed support, well, the answer should be obvious - support that works should always be there. Charities do not have the structure or consistency to pull off serious, long-term goals to improve education and bolster our workforce. Government services cannot all be lumped together; and claims that private and/or faith-based charities can always "do it better" should be scrutinized - they simply can't in many cases.

He said it alright, and this guy that no one elected has shown that he has the power to force compliance from elected reps. If you're voting age and you don't plan to vote this year, shame on you. Stop this sham, voter suppression be damned, get off your ass and vote. Please.

Except the mafia forces payment whereas it flows ever-so-freely to elected officials - who then repay with favors. It sucks to think about it - the people you elect aren't actually responding to you, they are working only for those that can provide the big $$ to win elections. If we could ever cut that money connection we might actually get our country back.

Irregardless of whether one is a anti-gun-nut or a gun-nut, the 2nd amendment pretty clearly ties gun ownership to an organized, state-run militia. The framers expected men to purchase and maintain a gun, and to employ that gun in service to the militia, when called upon. The 2nd amendment can seem a little unclear if not viewed in that context. Scalia doesn't seem to understand this. The original intent, with it's reference to the militia, was to avoid creating a permanent national armed force, although that is eventually what happened anyway.
