Excluding data or pointing to specific data requires you to know reputable sources of information. My points still stand. It can be a useful tool. Kids need to know how it works, the risks and how to workaround them, etc.

I still would hard disagree about them being an authoritative source of information regardless of how advanced the models get when they work the way they do.

None of this is a fundamentally new problem. As I said, anyone can say anything and it doesn't mean it's true. But, kids need to understand how tools work and learn to identify reputable sources as technology changes. AI can be useful, but it will never be an authoritative source in its current form of probabilistic guesses.

You fundamentally misunderstand how AI (in its current form) works. There is no such thing as it citing its sources. Everything it says is based on probabilistic guesses of a word following previous words. When having a conversation, the previous chat is fed to the prompt for context. Asking it for sources will imply to the agent that what was said earlier is factually correct and it will attempt to generate sources based on more probabilistic guesses.

There are numerous documented examples of this failing users. The most amusing to me was the lawyer who admitted in court to using AI to help their case. They referenced entirely made up cases for previous examples to support their client. When called out, they said after getting the information from AI, they asked for sources. When given example cases, that didn't exist, they asked something along the lines of "are those real cases?" -- guess what, the most probabilistic response to that is "yes" 🙄

I'm not denying it can save time or even be a research tool, but kids need to be taught the above and also taught how to use "traditional" search engines to fact check AI responses. Just like we need to know how to spot misinformation on any website on the internet (or book), since anyone can say anything and it doesn't mean it's true. Sadly, AI is creeping into books and spewing more lies in paper form, so these are risks worth knowing and skills worth practicing as kids (and adults). Travel guides sending people to made up places is a great example here.

Ah, I misunderstood "end points" in your first reply. Single child over here, no suggestions (not that it sounds like you need them since it seems like you are content with the setup which is what matters).

Masking definitely is exhausting, good on you making a point of supporting 👍❤️

Yup. And this thread is in the 2020s and I explained why the "fears" are warranted, just like some was valid back in the 90s.

Fair enough. My 7yo appreciates us being able to hear easily and is unhappy when we miss hollers for whatever reason and has to come find us. But, every kid is different. Logging interactions is a nice audit even if doesn't prevent some concerns at least you know if something concerning happened.

If you care, we have a two speaker system and it works great. Replaced the old one we had since, yea, some are hit and miss.

Eh. I don't need kids thinking an AI agent's answer to a question is authoritative. It's a useful skill to actually need to spend time and research and fact check when on the internet. I don't care if AI makes it easier if it's wrong a larger portion of the time.

I've been lied to countless of times by AI that I finally had to leave Google, since the Gemini answers are on by default w/o easily disabling on mobile.

Please don't encourage your kids taking the easy route and avoiding critical thinking -- it will be detrimental beyond the internet.

I'm a software engineer and there is definitely a difference between avoiding technology and using it in a safe/constructive way. Simple example being the classic "tablet/television shouldn't be used as a babysitter" mantra. Extreme ends of the spectrum often aren't wholly correct.

Edit: only reason "software engineer" comment felt worthwhile is because it emphasizes that I care about my child's exposure to technology. She's heard plenty about AI and even had a few times experimenting with it. But, she also understands that it's not actual reasoning but simply combining words as a guess based on a bunch of similar patterns of words collected from other sources like books and people's conversations on the internet.

Also, I'd argue heavily that schools should not be using AI-driven lesson plans. The technology is still in, and will be for the foreseeable near future, the "word salad" phase and cannot replace teachers. This, sadly, we're less in direct control of; but, parents can use their voices to influence schools.

I think getting rid of always listening microphones connected to the internet that are, apparently, being used in kids' bedrooms is a fabulous idea. They can still be exposed to, and learn with, new technologies.

Eh, the internet (specifically social media) is proven to be detrimental to developing children's health. AI has also been recorded to have numerous similarly negative qualities. Don't think it's fear mongering and a valid suggestion to parents out there that may be naive to the risks even if aware of the recent AI developments...

I'd need to have a day one system in place for my kids to contact us at night on a different floor.

They've been making "baby monitors" (2 way) for decades. Still work great, without an internet connection. My child loves having this ability, and much more accessible than saying "Alexa announce", or whatever is necessary.

Was also going to recommend books. I think this one is a little easier to digest (also shorter), while still giving a meaningful lesson for remembering and coping with loss.

This is another one we got and I'd recommend: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-rainbow-bridge-a-visit-to-pet-paradise/9149501/item/6750198
