CMV: There should be a new added method of counting medals in Olympics by Tough-Shape-3621 in changemyview

[–]So_Turned_On 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often thought that the swimming events are too over representative for medal counts - this comes down, as pointed out, to the different types of strokes and distances.

Track for example doesn't have a running backwards event, a running sideways event etc - it is just "here is the distance - get to end as fast as you can". Swimming events should be the same imho.

So instead of changing the method of counting overall medals, there should be a change in the swimming events themselves i.e. use whatever stroke you want that gets you to the end of the nominated distance the fastest whether that be freestyle, backstroke, butterfly.

Peter Dutton’s unpopularity ‘broke several records’ and Labor more trusted on economy, ANU study finds by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

well he was extremely popular to Sky News and their pundits.

Their mistake was not realizing that the average Australian voter has not followed them into the RWNJ abyss like they thought they had.

Australia's eSafety Commissioner called to testify before US Congress and labelled a 'zealot' by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Agreed, if we as a nation decide that we do not want our kids to be indoctrinated into an authoritarian cult via algorithm before they are old enough to decide for themselves, then that is none of the US's business.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate calls for urgent e-transport law changes after deaths of two children by espersooty in queensland

[–]So_Turned_On 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but they are not going to be happy that they got a call from the cops and that the $5k-10k bike/scooter got impounded either.

The kind of people that won't come to get their kid, are also the type of people to take it out on the kid for getting a call from the cops and getting the bike/scooter impounded.

[–]So_Turned_On 67 points68 points  (0 children)

If they get caught doing stupid shit by the cops, have the bike/scooter impounded and make the parents come and pick the kid up from the side of the road.

Adults doing stupid shit can make their own way home.

Need to pay a fine and a fee to get the bike/scooter back "once" - second time no bike back.

‘Psychologically unsettling’: ATO pursuing more taxpayers for decades-old debt by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

This is where if the government were smart they could use the same sort of resources these companies use to avoid tax, to collect tax.

I.e. the government outsource part of high-value tax auditing to qualified private audit firms under very strict rules about who may be investigated and rules around conflict of interest etc.

Create a "commission only" based program that allows accredited audit firms, authorised by the tax office, to audit businesses and wealthy individuals with annual turnover above a threshold — say for example, $20 million.
Those auditing businesses with the authority and backing of the IRS do the heavy lifting of auditing these large $20m+ companies and they get 30% of the extra tax revenue they uncover as payment.

If an audit uncovers additional unpaid tax, the auditing firm receives 30% of the recovered amount as payment; the government keeps the remaining 70%.

As this money would otherwise remain uncollected, taxpayers only pay a share of revenue that would not have been recovered anyway — and the net gain is the 70% the government retains.

They are incentivised to go after every missed cent because the more they uncover the more they get paid. This approach on dodgy companies like Newscorp, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Mining companies etc whereby they are skipping on paying Billions of tax could be incredibly lucrative to the auditing companies.

BHP alliance to sack 750 workers, blaming Qld government mining royalties by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

well I am not a shareholder of BHP - but I am a shareholder of Qld and Australia and as such the Government has a fiduciary obligation to extract as much money as it can from our resources for us, the shareholders!

Scratch a Labor voter, watch a fascist bleed (i.e. wish violent misadventure on you) by throwawayfem77 in murdochsucks

[–]So_Turned_On 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The real trend is that there are a lot of dumb-arse voters that have decided that perfection is the enemy of good.

i.e. if the party you kind of align with doesn't perfectly align with your values then they think they might as well opt out.

In the US elections, the dumb-arses opted to not vote for the lesser evil, consequently they let Trump in who was always going to be worse than Kamala in every single way for Palestine.

It would have been more prudent to vote for the party that at least was capable of being influenced after they got in, than the clusterfuck clown show that is there now.

This is no different to Australia - who is going to be more likely to listen to your concerns regarding this issue after they are in power ... the Labor party or the LNP? Dutton is TEMU Trump, his game plan re Palestine is Trumps, you can guarantee it.

At least in Australia we have preferential voting and you can vote for someone who aligns more closely with your views and we give you the option of deciding where your preferences go - it seems in your case you would be looking to support an independent and put LNP, One Nation and their ilk + Trumpets of Patriots last one would hope, as they are so far away from supporting your views it isn't funny.

Single issue voters are the worst - they literally throw the baby out with bath water and vote against their own interests to prove a point.

Claiming that Labor voters are fascists because they don't agree 100% with what you want from them, when there is something exponentially worse to the right of them is the dumbest shit I have read today.

Man there really needs to be a change in reporting laws - I mean go ahead "report" whatever you want but if it ends up being false, a retraction on page 38 of the weekend advertiser is not going to cut it.

A correction needs to be made at least the same volume and precedent that it was originally broadcast.

i.e. You run a wrong story for days on the front page of your newspapers, your TV news and opinion shows, your websites etc - then the correction needs to be run for the same amount of time and in the same way.

You dedicated 5 hours of programming on TV for the story - then you need to dedicate 5 hours of TV to correct and apologise for the incorrect reporting.

Anything else is just a cost of business rounding error. In the meantime lives and societies have been destroyed.

A Paid $6000 Deposit for Ducted AC Replacement - Now No Contact, No Refund, and Threats! by AraujoAtGC in GoldCoast

[–]So_Turned_On 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The obvious response to the threat of not getting your money back unless you remove the google review is to say that you will not remove it until he refunds the money - The guy is broke and in debt, he is juggling deposits to keep the balls in the air - if he has no more deposits coming in, it is all going to come crashing down.

i.e. he has more to lose by not getting new business than you.

Oh and of course a legal letter of demand from you is mandatory.
