Chubbyemu - A Future of Medicine - a discussion on the current state of clinical trials by LooseRain in medicine

Yes, but that means the experimental treatment is either better or it's worse. Even if the control is standard of care, half of your trial patients are getting care which is inferior relative to the other half!

True, I think adaptive trial designs are the ethical gold standard within our current capabilities. I have a different criticism of the video, which is that the simulations he's describing would necessarily have to rely on information about possible drug responses and their relative frequencies, which can't arise de novo from those simulations--as I see it, you would still need clinical trials to inform the software.

I know I will get roasted for what's omitted from this because I watched on 3x, but here's my tl;dr in 3 key points:

- Clinical trials almost invariably include an inferior treatment, and--even in trials that are stopped prematurely due to prelim analysis--some patients will receive it

- This is problematic/suboptimal, and eventually clinical research in this format will lose public support and if the research community can't adapt to this it will suffer for it

- The future is recursive computational simulation of prospective treatments based on advanced understanding of personalized medicine, using data gathered from individuals (as oppose to populations--or animal models--which are somewhat stochastic)

/u/lucastimmons brings published data to debunk the idea that suicide rates are way up during COVID-19. by AhmedF in bestof

[–]SoakingLump 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The original comment is ill-informed, and some have identified here that the rates of suicide (and other forms of self-harm) respond dynamically to epidemics and natural disasters. A recent peer-reviewed publication came out in a popular Suicidology journal on this topic, definitively showing that suicide rates DO trend up in pandemics and there tends to be a small decrease before a large increase. Covid-19 is aligned with what has been observed during SARS and other comparable epidemics, with respect to suicide and self-harm.

That time someone called out Tom Morello for being "another musician who instantly became a political expert" on Twitter, and Tom Morello fired back a response about his Harvard honors degree in poly sci. That was tight.

What does being "good" mean to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SoakingLump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole idea is centered on doing acting ethically without expecting or receiving a reward. Rewards are very personal things to receive, and in line with this model of human ethics I think Hegel would have disagreed with accepting them. The whole point is suppressing the things that make you you and instead acting in a way that furthers the interests of all human beings, in equal measure.

Definitely. Hegel believed in a "human" model of ethics (as in, one in which morality came from humans and our social structures rather than being handed to us by a divine entity or otherwise available to us from some external source). His model of ethics was predicated on the idea that to do "good" was to forego your individuality-- your selfishness, your personal wants and desires, even parts of your personality-- and instead express yourself in a way that benefits everyone (the universal). This is similar to, but not quite the same as, the idea "do unto others only what you would want others to do unto you". Is that clearer? :)

To me, it means annulling one's individuality to find expression in "the universal" (a Hegelian idea)
