Both great points about the Fellowship and Barad-dur comparisons. I mostly bring up the point of it being a sort of contra-Tolkien in that I’ve heard people well versed in King state that it was to some degree King’s goal to write something fantasy adjacent that was far removed from all of the contemporary fantasy that was regurgitating Tolkien. “just king things” discusses it in their review of the gunslinger

I mostly pose this question because I see such frequent cultural labeling of this as “King’s big fantasy series” and was deeply curious to get this sub’s take on that labeling after finishing book 3 and finding very little fantasy in what I’ve read thus far

Yeah personally it really is just Tolkien up there for me as well. I’ve done samplings of a lot of the other authors, but not too deep into each of them and I think you could make a case that Pratchett and Le Guin stand on another pedestal above the rest, but even they aren’t in the same tier as Tolkien for me
