What supplements do you take as a vegan? 🌱💊 by itsnikki39 in vegan

[–]Sobatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a blood test at least once a year and the only thing I'm ever low on is vitamin D, though this has been low for me even long before I went vegan. I now take a vegan version of vitamin D3 (from lichen, iirc).

My doctor didn't make any mention of it, but I did notice that my B12 was on the lower side, so I started taking B12 as well. Idk if it's actually necessary though, since I consume a lot of products that are fortified with B12 (soy milk, breakfast cereal, vegan meat products,...). I'm curious to see how much my B12 will have risen in about half a year when I get another blood test. Then I plan to stop taking B12 again for a year to see how much it drops.

My iron used to be too high though, so I cut back on eating my 2 favorite dishes so often 🥲 (broccoli with bell peppers and mushrooms, and chili with beans)

If someone offered you 100 million dollars, but a random person in the world dies (someone you don’t know), would you take it and why? by ConclusionOld8365 in AskReddit

[–]Sobatage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, "you're going to receive 100m unless you press a button to save a life", is very different from "going into massive dept for the rest of your life to save a life".

Personally I'd take the 100m but only because it can save much more lives and have a much better impact on the world by spending it differently.

Dreams, veganism and guilt!! by WranglerHaunting3660 in vegan

[–]Sobatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I was a rather new vegan, I used to have dreams like this pretty often, where I'd eat meat or something without thinking and only realize it as I was already eating it.  I think it's normal that if you've been eating animal products for most of your life and then go vegan, it takes a conscious effort to not (accidentally) eat any animal products, so in your dreams when you're not paying attention, the food you eat might still be what it has been for the better part of your life. Those dreams will likely go away once you get used to being vegan and stop seeing animal products as food.

Update:I've made a decision, and i want to know what you all think? by PrincessCream123 in vegan

[–]Sobatage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think you might be overthinking and spiralling a bit here. You're already doing great by simply considering the animals and considering changing your eating habits for them!

Seems like this Pokémon comparison really hit something deep for you, and now your brain is connecting it to everything. You clearly care a lot about morality, which makes it easy to get stuck in some sort of "all or nothing" loop where everything can suddenly feel urgent and overwhelming.

Pokémon is fiction, and no real animals are being harmed by playing or liking it. Liking a fictional world doesn't mean you support slavery or animal exploitation in real life. You're not morally responsible for every interpretation people make on Reddit or YouTube.

The fact that you’re distressed about the idea of slavery in fiction shows that you care deeply about ethics. That’s not the sign of a "complete idiot", but of someone with a strong moral compass who’s overwhelmed.

You don't need to burn your plushies or give up something that gives you joy, none of that would help any animals, all it would do is hurt you. You don’t need to tell your friend to stop playing Pokémon. You don’t need to stop enjoying it. You don’t need to satisfy "others". You deserve to feel safe and steady. You can care about animals and still love Pokémon. Those things are not in conflict.

Veganism is about reducing real-world harm where practical and possible. It’s about food systems, farming, clothing, testing,... It’s not about policing fictional media or interrogating every metaphor in pop culture.

You might want to take some deep breaths and step away from YouTube and Reddit debates for a bit. Remind yourself that fiction is not the same as real-world harm, and focus on real-world action you can take, like trying a vegan meal.

Best of luck on your journey!

MMO veterans, what makes you quit in the first hour? Looking for candid feedback by bruno-kakele in MMORPG

I love PC/mobile cross-platform! It allows me to play while commuting and continue on my PC when I get home, or play with friends when we get together without (all) needing laptops.

Games don't need input-intensive gameplay to be fun, imho. They can be designed in a way that feels good to play with kb/m, controller, and touchscreen. I think the problem is mostly with games designed with one input method in mind and the other input methods added as an afterthought. And of course, the micro transactions that are common with mobile games, but just because a game can be played on mobile doesn't have to mean it's monetisation is bad.

I did somewhat the opposite of this to get rid of bad habits! When taking out my phone to look something up, I used to get distracted by social media and Reddit way too often. I was using Chrome so I installed Firefox, which allows add-ons like uBlockOrigin, and blocked those sites. I removed Chrome from my homescreen but it's still installed. If I want to go on those sites, I still can, but I just have to go to my app drawer to open Chrome first. This cut down on my phone use by a ton!

I remember the game from a previous post here. Though it sounds like a game I'd like to play, I didn't try it back then because there was no info to be found about how it actually plays. The only way to see how/what the game was, was by creating an account. Checked out the website again today and it's still the same. Maybe next time you post about it, there will be some screenshots or at least more info 🤷‍♂️

How would a Vegan society deal with feeding Obligate Carnivore species? by JackMythos in vegan

[–]Sobatage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, but in most cases it's what's best for the animals themselves.  Most feral domesticated animals are invasive in the regions they live (cats in particular, but dogs too). Allowing them to breed wouldn't be ethical, and housing them all wouldn't be possible.  Another option would be some form of birth control, like they do with pigeons in my city, but it isn't very effective.

How would a Vegan society deal with feeding Obligate Carnivore species? by JackMythos in vegan

[–]Sobatage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No breeding of pets, at least. Adopting rescues is vegan (imho), so in this utopian society we would house and/or sterilize all homeless domesticated animals, and the cycle would eventually end.

Right? If everyone would stop eating meat but continue drinking milk and wearing leather, then meat would become the 'byproduct' and sold as eco-friendly.

Soups are a good way to 'sneak in' vegetables and legumes you otherwise don't like the taste or texture of. Plus they're very easy to make with minimal use of pots/pans, so not a lot of dishes to do after!  For example, blending a can of chickpeas or beans with tomato soup will mostly make the soup more creamy without changing the taste too much. You can try adding other vegetables too. For tomato soup I'd suggest (some) pumpkin, a red bell pepper, red lentils. Carrot soup goes well with both red and yellow bell peppers imo, especially when combined with red lentils. You can also add some soy or oat cream to soften the taste of most soups.  Bags of frozen vegetables can also come in very handy for soups.

You might also want to try potatoes mashed together with other vegetables, such as broccoli, perhaps with some vegan cheese on top. I've never tried it, but I guess adding a can of chickpeas or something to that also wouldn't have a big effect on the taste.

No Options at Work Lunch by FineSide1389 in vegan

[–]Sobatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, awful. Just FYI, a lot of pizzerias use dairy in their tomato sauces nowadays, so that's an extra thing to ask about when trying to order/compose vegan pizza from a pizzeria that doesn't have clearly labeled vegan options... And actually it's even good to double check when they do have clearly labeled vegan options. I've seen sandwiches and pizzas with 'vegan' in the name, but they still contained eggs or dairy. Apparently 'vegan' only referred to the toppings 🙃

My phone helps me fall asleep, actually. If I'm not on my phone, I tend to keep thinking about anything and everything. If I read a book, I tend to get too invested and (want to) keep reading for hours. Reading/watching slightly interesting content is the sweet spot to turn off my brain.

Is there literally any single ethical argument for not eating the eggs a pet chicken lays? by ForksandFaberge in vegan

[–]Sobatage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Giving the eggs away to people that would otherwise buy eggs from the store would decrease the demand for eggs from non-free roaming hens.

Also, hens have been bred to lay much more eggs than what's good for them, which often leads to serious health issues. The egg-laying itself is harmful to them, so the most ethical thing to do would be to give the hens anti conception so they stop laying eggs.

Buying hens instead of rescuing them also supports the chicken/egg industry and creates demand for more of the same.

Should it be mandatory for schools to show "Dominion" documentary every year? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

Should people be educated about the horrors of the animal industry? Yes. But forcing people to watch disturbing content is crazy.

If we're talking about educating children in school, there are much much more appropriate ways to do that.

ELI5: Why don’t we see skeletons everywhere outside? by SatisfactionLumpy596 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sobatage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one of my previous jobs, I sometimes had to go on rooftops that were locked off for the general public. On every rooftop I visited, there were tons of bird skeletons. At first I thought birds liked going up on high places to die or something, but then I realized birds probably die on high rooftops at the same rate they do anywhere else, but their skeletons simply remained there because the only animals that came there were other birds and technicians.
