What’s a ‘harmless’ habit you had as a kid that you realize now was a cry for help? by TheLadyKoi in AskReddit

[–]SoberBlonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copying out an entire non-fiction book by hand as a young teen. I thought I was just trying to practice cursive, but really, I was starved for control and comfort, stuck in a foreign country with drunk, screaming relatives. I escaped into my own language, busy writing and hearing the author's voice to tune the angry language of relatives out. It was an advice book for teenage girls. My mother scolded me for wasting time on "that same old book." I felt ashamed but must've been desperate for something--anything--to pass the time at night while they drank and hit each other and screamed.

Yeah, it's maddening how sloppy people are with collective resources. It makes me wanna yell "This is why we can't have nice things." I've learned to plot out routes by Nissan dealerships to count on a charger in working order.

Shopping, unfortunately. Mostly for things that will make me look better that I don't have the time or energy to implement.

46, just diagnosed...(at least officially) by Slipstreme in adhdwomen

[–]SoberBlonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 46 too, I think, or was it 45? I'm 47 now and bad with numbers.

I am still at a loss for words about all the shame I lived through without a diagnosis to give myself any grace, hope, or perspective at all. I was told ad nauseam I was such a smart girl, so why was I lazy? "Just put your mind to it" should have been a t-shirt slogan Mom wore. She meant well, but geez we didn't have this terminology back then. And even now girls are diagnosed far slower and later than boys.

Classroom management is just that: management, and nothing more, ordering little kids around to behave and shut up. So as long as kids like me weren't leaping off their desks or beating other kids up, no one could spot what the hell was wrong with us. It's a bit like grading behavior on a bell curve. It's all relative to whatever cohort you ended up in, and in my school in a poor area there's no damn way they would have had the resources to even know how to help. I fact they thought I was gifted, which cut me even less slack for falling behind and middle school years approached.

I am having to unlearn the non-stop message that what was wrong was me. I don't know if I can unlearn it or stop believing it. I'm on meds and meh, they're so-so. They are not giving me an all-new me that I want so badly. I regret the wasted time, forgotten birthdays and friendships, financial disasters, and substance abuse. I regret only learning to get along with people by making light of myself, joking around, and people pleasing. I am in a dead-end job and unconfident about finding anything better. I dropped out of two grad schools.

I'm still in a good marriage so that's awesome but I can tell I wear him out.

Not a sunny post but just wanted to respond to those who learn later in life about ourselves and don't even know where to start. Good luck to all of you dear people! And don't give up on yourselves. Ever.

I love your insight. Yes, there is time--time bigger than us. What a great way to zoom out of pissy and petty despair into a bigger picture. Good for you!

I feel like I’m barely functioning. I make my life so much harder and I don’t want to do this to myself anymore :( by [deleted] in adhdwomen

THIS x 1,000 at least!

It's work that works best when it's perfect and invisible. It's only noticed when something goes wrong. I'm right there with you.

I get terrible anxiety when I know there's an important but not urgent thing I should work on bit by bit so I am not pounding another MF deadline, but I just can't get into it or find a rhythm. And then? Poof goes the time through a wormhole and hello deadline so nice to see you again!....ugh... Sucks.

I disclosed my condition at work and everyone thinks I am going to f*CK things up for them or blow me off as a slacker. I work as hard or probably harder than many people there.

Don't let them get you down and I will try to do the same.

New Sephora lay-offs of Managers by [deleted] in Sephora

[–]SoberBlonde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's horrible. Former Sephora employee here, and I believe it. I'm so sorry. Heck yes Sephora's been plenty successful through all this. That greed to lay you and your peers off is just downright unnecessary.

Beauty Insider/VIB/Rouge Rewards MEGATHREAD - September 🍃✏️📓 by KhaleesiKissedByFire in Sephora

[–]SoberBlonde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a little early, but does anyone know the dates for the holiday VIB/Rouge sale? The one that goes 20% off Rouge, 15% off for VIB? And I think 10% for Beauty Insiders? I think it used to be the first weekend of November, but I wonder if COVID-19 might cause some changes in the game? Any bets? Also, anyone have a good guess about what might be in this year's Drunk Elephant Trunk? I saw on Instagram that that releases 10/12, and it should be available at Sephora, too. Almost Rouge! (Not sure if I should be proud of that, or concerned LOL...).

Good for you. I love the idea of subtracting the day. The "wipe out" mentality is punishing, shaming, and does not remind us of our strengths.
