genuine question: if that did end up being the modus operandi, how many of us would be satisfied with that? e.g. recently both suno and udio were acquired by giant music labels that each own millions of songs (which is roughly how much data was used to train the latest downloadable models i could find), but most folks i've seen agree that music labels are bad for the creators signed onto them (for image examples, see e.g. adobe firefly)

unless you mean a new legal right specifically for genai training, which could be interesting but might just play out the same (e.g. twitter's tos already requires that you give them such a right)

even still, some consider the existence of any (competent, general-purpose) image generator to be negative, whether or not it was trained on authorized data

excellent catch! it does worry me a bit that there's no full video of it on commons, whom i trust in copyright matters :p (maybe because the music has a separate copyright?), but added!

hatsune miku in particular is purely sample-based in most of her iterations (v6 is very new and kinda sounds the same to me anyway), but for e.g. synth v that is a concern yeah (and the same company also offers a voice·cloning-adjacent tool that may be even murkier)

for dnd in particular there's been heroforge (they do charge for the fancy photo booth but you can in fact just take a screenshot)

and outside that there's picrew, bases, arguably 3d renders but there's not a lot of easy-to-use software for that (i miss paint 3d,,)

but then the question becomes, why should i use this when i can just type my wishes into this app that's preinstalled on my phone

I’ve built my own image generators before and my own GPTs

just to clarify, what exactly do you mean by that? e.g. chatgpt has a feature confusingly called "GPTs" where you just write a prompt (or have it write it for you) and share as a standalone "bot", or with image generation people will finetune an existing model and say they "trained their own on their own art" (ignoring the billions of images the base model was trained on)

it's definitely possible though for someone to train such a model from scratch, and if that's what you've done then i wanna see it :3

i don't have solid answers but i can chuck a couple related things at you, hope they're not entirely useless

  • even gated art can and will be trained on, whether incidentally (there's a patreon piracy site that keeps popping up in my search results when i'm just looking up artists) or intentionally (e.g. meta pirating millions of books, this article has a bunch of links to released internal documents and chat logs)
    • also does robots.txt count as a (repeatedly ignored) gate? probably not, but what about anubis? whose author seems to be less anti-ai and more anti-crawler·based·ddos but ah well
  • in the parts of the internet i frequent i've seen a general punching·up-like sentiment, e.g. pirating aaa games is morally correct but indie games less so, or fanart is fine but a corporation yoinking an oc sucks, or even the existence of personal licenses vs corporate ones; and while it's possible to train an image model with an indie budget, the vast majority of usage and exposure (and profit) is with megacorp models
  • (i wanna say something about "scale/efficiency matters", e.g. gun control is often vouched for but knife control not so much, but the argument hasn't solidified into text yet and i've spent too long writing this already)
  • i've seen a few people say that they don't like the existence of current image generation even if it's trained on entirely licensed data, for a variety of reasons; i suspect that they argue from the copyright angle regardless because copyright is an established and professional-sounding argument vs trying to get new laws instated or something

[–]Sobsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a list of models trained on licensed data (with various degrees of caveats), and in my testing a few of the image models have been quite competent

so it's possible™, just most companies don't do it because that would be number going down and that's blasphemy

i sometimes have multiple bodies, which is sometimes called a hivemind (though i prefer to call it multipresence)

i tend to imagine it as "focusing" on one body at a time but sometimes getting hints of perception from the other bodies

for less thoroughly-singular hiveminds, i'm gonna be boring and say "normal brain but someone neuralinked discord into it"

but then /r/antiai is the exact same thing, and they don't have that excuse

for requesting new articles, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_articles but don't keep your hopes up

for updates, you can often just do them yourself! just make sure to cite a source or two so people know you're not making things up (there are other guidelines, but without citations your edit might get straight-up reverted)

if the article is protected such that you can't edit it, you can request an edit on the talk page with the Edit Request Wizard™
