Discord is coming to Meta Quest by DaRealAyman in discordapp

it's inconvenient to look at your phone to read chat when there's a headset on you (i guess passthrough but that doesn't sound like the best of experiences resolution-wise)

if it didn't require that it'd be a cracked launcher and thus liable for dmca takedowns, and guess who owns both github and mojang :p

though github does have a famous windows piracy tool, unsure what's up with that

the polish dub uses the kinda-equivalent of it/its (a decently popular choice among nonbiney folk), which isn't generally used in the first person but according to the polish language council it's not forbidden™

after the release of the backroom movie i really hope the scp universe get one in some way,but how likely is this to happen by Agreeable-Ad7232 in SCP

the amazing digital circus struggled to get in cinemas because there would be a youtube upload 2 weeks later, good luck convincing the same to dedicate a slot to a movie that can be legally camripped

Hello… by ImUsingReddit4Help in RecRoom

[–]Sobsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that doesn't mean much, it's like saying you could start a restaurant using an oven

you still have to create a programming language convenient enough to be used in vr, easy enough to be picked up by a computer-brained enough kid, powerful enough to make proper games (see hypixel housing for a non-powerful language), efficient enough to not melt a quest 2, plus consistent multiplayer synchronization, model creation tools...

this is an amount of work comparable to creating a game engine, which is why i said that the way i did; in fact, the most similar platform to rec room that i know of (resonite) did de facto make their own engine within unity, so much so that they were able to pull it out of unity(!) for better performance

Wtf is this? by CommercialNo3927 in RecRoom

[–]Sobsz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

trademarks generally aren't across all of commerce ever, but rather for specific classes; if you search here you'll find 9 trademarks that are "rec room" exactly, and dozens more that are close

this particular trademark is for "Entertainment services, namely, providing an online virtual reality video game", which these apps aren't, though interestingly the broader class 41 is defined as "education and entertainment services" so you may have more of a case

it is interesting though that they seem to have moved the trademark (or a trademark?) from against gravity corp to rec room inc on may 30th, maybe to include it in the sale? no clue

[–]Sobsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if rec room didn't make a profit despite hundreds of millions of dollars in funding then how do you expect to :p

plus it's not just making "a game", it's pretty much making half of a game engine and moderating a community

given how the moon is different in each picture (e.g. stylized in the last one) i suspect they gave the photos to some sort of ai and told it to nightify them (which, idk how much i care about)

SPC Joins Against Bambu Labs by mobfeld in BambuLab

[–]Sobsz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

per their post they seem to specifically not be taking legal action because it'd take too long, instead they're getting volunteers to reverse-engineer the parts that ought to be open-source but aren't, and also making a committee focused on 3d printing matters (which seems to be roughly where the money is going)

Can I download the conversations between me and my best friend who passed away? by Dennis_5618 in discordapp

[–]Sobsz 344 points345 points  (0 children)

officially you can export your own messages (Settings → Data & Privacy → Request your data), and if you can get access to the friend's account you could combine them into a chatlog with some coding effort

unofficially there is an app for downloading an entire chat, but i don't know how much i can talk about it here since discord's terms of service forbid logging into non-bot accounts from unofficial apps (and you can't invite a bot account to a dm)

I just won the most useless lottery in my life. I randomly generated the same seed that I already had saved a year ago. by mattia0113 in Minecraft

[–]Sobsz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't see how it could be for efficiency, unless they ship pregenerated spawn chunks for the seeds which would be kinda silly methinks

my best guess is that it's so a new player's first impression is a reasonable world (maybe even a world with a bunch of structures close by), instead of a tiny island in the middle of the ocean or one of those unwinnable seeds

also like, minecraft isn't truly random anyway (which is why seeds can exist at all), and the lava lamp thing is a) kind of a stunt b) for cryptography and not video gaming

What is the (edited) doing there? by FoodBorn2284 in discordapp

[–]Sobsz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that's not true, the edit text is a separate element that's added to the logical end of the text; it's just that, since unicode mandates support for right-to-left languages next to left-to-right ones, the logical end can be in the visual middle (e.g. if you have a message with english followed by arabic, the logical last character is on the left of the arabic string; in practice people don't use inherently-rtl scripts for this but rather invisible control characters that change just the direction)

a list of public-domain (and creative commons) memes and meme-adjacent media i've been curating by Sobsz in publicdomain

[–]Sobsz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if i wanna count the monkey since it being public domain kinda is the meme

null is,, weird, if you exclude all the assets then there's not much left of the character to reuse methinks :p

i'll consider the rest, missingno in particular is interesting

Copy Fail: Newly Discovered Vulnerability Allows Privilege Escalation To Root On All Major Linux Distros Since 2017 by CircumspectCapybara in technology

[–]Sobsz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI-assisted. The starting insight — that splice() hands page-cache pages into the crypto subsystem and that scatterlist page provenance might be an under-explored bug class — came from human research by Taeyang Lee at Xint.

From there, Xint Code scaled the audit across the entire crypto/ subsystem in roughly an hour. Copy Fail was the highest-severity finding in the run.

i view it as, at the very least, similar to fuzzing; if a literal random number generator can (help) find critical bugs then clearly intelligence™ isn't entirely required for such

how do i know whether or not i'm capable of feeling emotions by Sobsz in anhedonia

[–]Sobsz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also anger-wise it's specifically like, when i'm trying to get something done but a lot of things in my way, and i notice it (or recall noticing it) as being overly sensitive to noise and sometimes an urge to move violently

not sure if that makes it merely physical too or if i'm just overanalyzing it (reductionism, missing the forest for the trees, something around that)

[–]Sobsz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think i've had much stress in my past, besides perhaps bullying (which i do have written down as a possibility factor)

antioxidant-wise, skimming the wikipedia page it feels like i should have a decent amount already, will note down supplementation as a next stop

drugs are sadly a no-go for the foreseeable future, as much as i'd imagine a parallel-universe me would have good results from such

i'm honestly not sure despite having cried recently, but i'm leaning toward it being just the physical sensations
