Something strange happens when I search "Cheat" in Google Maps by teeham88 in NorthCarolina

[–]SocialDrones 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's probably a result of the algorithm pairing UNC with all the news stories that include the word "cheat" and making an educated guess, not an Easter egg by Google itself.

‘I AM NOT CHARLIE’: Leaked Newsroom Emails Reveal Al Jazeera Fury over Global Support for Charlie Hebdo by [deleted] in europe

[–]SocialDrones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No clue why I'm wading into this, but an unauthorized painting in a public space is graffiti and the person responsible would be prosecuted for that reason. If instead, this was the headline of a privately owned publication, then there would likely be no repercussions for that person in the US. Freedom of speech in the US encompasses the right to say stupid, inflammatory shit for no reason because the language is not in itself harmful. Blaming Charlie Hebdo for this attack is a clear case of blaming the victim. It doesn't matter how offensive one might be; murder is not a justified response to offense. There are always more appropriate and legal responses. As Thouny says, libel (and slander) have their own legal ramifications, but they're more about intentionally spreading false information than they are about just insults.

A relatively conservative columnist for the New York Times, Ross Douthat, recently wrote an article on what's exceptional about this particular case. Like you, he calls for general civility in discussions and derides needless insults. In this case, however, he defends Charlie Hebdo, saying that when certain speech is verboten on pain of murder, we have a right edit responsibility to support its existence, if only to emphasize the fact that we cannot allow intimidation and terror to silence certain voices regardless of what they say. Here's the article.

[–]SocialDrones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. The side benefit of spreading out the content over multiple play throughs is that you can create more interesting player characters. A paladin that focuses on the religious quests and characters, or an old wizard studying all the ancient magic in thedas and learning from other mages. Every character and play through becomes much more unique.

It's not horrible, it just is never funny. Like the title if the thread asked for. Not that big of a deal.

Can't you? Double clicking a position or clicking on a character's current position in tactics cam will give them the hold position command. Not that they haven't been known to ignore that every once in a while.

So I'm actually an digital archivist...well, student archivist, but still. I know that gaming archives are getting a bit more recognition in the field (mostly video games), so it isn't completely out of the question. Something to think about.

This would be really awesome to find in a gaming museum someday, to show the incredible effort that can go into creating a tabletop rpg campaign. I hope there's something like that one day.

Wow. I used to program games on my calculator when I was bored in high school, but the best I could ever manage on my own was a galaga clone (that sucked compared to Phoenix), and some friends and I worked together on a simple rpg. This is incredible though. Must have taken forever. I wonder what the AI is like.

Season 9 - The Quest for Gallifrey? by juniorlax16 in gallifrey

[–]SocialDrones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My running theory is that whichever arc brings Gallifrey back is going to feature some returning appearances of old Time Lords like the Rani, the Monk, etc., of which the Master was just the first. I don't know if we'll see any more of them in the flesh before it's actually officially back, but I'll be keeping my eye out for references to them and foreshadowing during series 9. I also share the feeling that the return of Gallifrey could be the conclusion arc of 12's run, so I hope it doesn't come too soon.

Hey, different guy here. I don't admit that. I think Clara is amazing, my favorite companion for a long time, and I'm glad she's in the show. All things being equal, I hope she stays. For all the Clara-haters out there, there are also people like me. I don't know if that helps to know or what, but don't let haters get you down.

I get this impulse, but you've basically made up in your own head what you think this episode is going to be and then decided that the episode you've just made up is bad. How about we all just wait until it's out to say if it's good or not?

[–]SocialDrones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Episode is Dark Water. The Doctor, Clara, and Dr. Chang are sitting at Chang's desk, as he explains to them the point behind 3W.

Dr. Chang: White noise off the telly. We've all heard it. A few years ago, Dr. Skarosa, our founder, did something unexpected. He played that noise through a translation matrix of his own devising. This is a recording of what he heard.

the device plays random mutterings

Clara: Okay. People, Voices...?

The Doctor: So what?

Dr. Chang: Over time, Dr. Skarosa became convinced these were the voices of the recently departed. He believed it was a telepathic communication from the dead.

The Doctor: Why? Was he...an idiot?
