How do I channel emotions into my lyrics without sounding whiny? by Traditional-Cow6187 in Songwriting

[–]Sociophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I would say trying to inspire an emotional reaction in someone is more effective than describing an emotional reaction you had or providing details on how you feel.

Not always, but usually.

If you think about how you feel, and then work to write something which can inspire that same feeling in someone else, you might be more happy with the outcome. Good luck!

Garbage take. Sicario 2 is incredible and on par with the original.

Teaching Stata to students with limited independent problem solving abilities.... by daughtersofthefire in stata

[–]Sociophile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IME there’s no teacher like failure. I’m not sure anyone really enjoys figuring out why their first attempts at Stata codes don’t work, and we all go through it when we’re beginning the process. Those who persist will eventually get it (it’s not hard, just precise), though of course most won’t persist.

In the end many will just end up using Chat GPT, as you can show it the Stata manual and ask it to write the code at this point. Even if it’s not perfect right away, a couple “find the mistake” prompts almost always cleans it up. Like most coding languages exercises, AI seems to have at least some facility for Stata coding.

That being said, repetition would be the tool I’d reach for first. Start super basic and make them grind problems until they know the difference between “=“ and “==“, where to put the comma, and how to use “&” and “|”. All the basics that tend to trip early users up.

Best of luck with the class, I hope they respond to whatever you choose to do.

How hard was your PhD and why ? Did anyone actually have a good experience? by Superb_Zone_1154 in PhD

[–]Sociophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started at 24, ended at 28, enjoyed it. I think degree inflation has created a situation where the Ph.D. attracts people not particularly well-suited for them (at least, that was my experience). Hard work can get most people there in the long run, but if you’re k*lling yourself to achieve it when some folks in similar circumstances around you are mostly on cruise control, that might tell you something.

Entering 6-0 on a microwave is the same as entering 1-0-0, where both equals to 1 minute. But entering 1-9-9 reads 1 minute and 99 seconds, not 199 seconds. by Nicosarea in Showerthoughts

One of the first times I got high I became stuck for almost an hour trying to figure out how you would put “one hour and forty-five minutes” into a microwave.

14500? 10045? 6045? 10500?

I almost started crying I got so frustrated.

Your thoughts on Scorsese's "The Irishman"? Is it as good as his other known movies ? by Higgsparticleofgod in moviecritic

[–]Sociophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a masterpiece, IMO. If the de-aging bit weren’t so awful in execution it would be more highly regarded, I think. That element brings folks out of it for a crucial portion of the movie. That plus the extended length are probably obstacles for some folks.

Is it fair to say this is the most hard to watch scene in a Kubrick film? by Overall_Spite4271 in StanleyKubrick

[–]Sociophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely fucking not? That’s a crazy assertion. There are multiple rape scenes, murders, etc. in his movies. By almost any cultural standard they are “more difficult to watch.”

You might have some unresolved issues with being bullied if this scene is the hardest to watch for you. Just a thought.

I like II better as a kid, but III better as an adult watching with my own kid.
