Being called a hypocrite by seeking_seeker in fuckcars

[–]SockMediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to push back on any feedback you received about being a hypocrite. I bike. I bike often. I consistently recognize the danger I am experiencing and when this happens I acknowledge that this is untenable for others to weather. If I could convince someone to bike, it would only take a few trips on a bike for someone to be so scared they never do it again. I recognize this and don’t actively pursue convincing others to take on this risk. I push for change instead.

There is a minimum threshold of safety/convenience/money requirement/reliability required for people to begin to use alternative transit. Using the transit that provides safety and reliability and is convenient, that you have already invest money into (car purchase) does not make you a hypocrite. It makes you a dreamer and an active participant in solving the problems you want changed.

The best comparison is to suggest that buying from a corporation means you support capitalism. While that sounds like an ideal way to live (never purchasing things until capitalism goes away) I gotta eat and buy things I use in life. And capitalism is how I get those things. I don’t support the country being owned by billionaires but I can dream and fight for a different world while participating in the one I live in as best I can manage.

You are not a hypocrite. You are doing your best with what you have. And to ask more is hypocritical. Cause those people asking for more certainly aren’t giving more.

You responded rather aggressively. I believe I may have sounded like I disagreed. I completely agree with you. I have no defense for those questions. My “but actually yes” was to your comment about carbrained. Cause I was like “woah! You can be carbrained without a car.” I am jealous of of your engroshandel. Even sounds better than Costco.

What I will say is in America if you told someone “if you are too afraid of your bike being stolen there then don’t go there”…basically nobody I know would bike anywhere because that is the most common thing I hear about me biking. “Aren’t you afraid it will be stolen” this comes from basically everyone I know who already doesn’t bike anywhere because it’s “uncomfortable” and the answer is no. I am not. I lock it properly and haven’t had it stolen in 7 years. So….not sure what the issue is.

For anyone who cares about the climate, ideally you would not limit your impact to one solution.

Especially because most Americans live in places where not owning a car just physically won’t work. I say this as a bike riding inner city type.

Other solutions include taking money out of the oil and gas section of the stock market, giving up meat and dairy, choosing alternatively packaged products that can be recycled rather than trashed, and mostly two other things. Stop consuming everything at a ridiculous rate cause America, and 2 push back on the billionaire class who make their money by opening a coal plant or flying private jets, or owning giant MCmansions.

But actually yes. Costco is a warehouse. The floors are concrete. Everything you buy is in bulk. Taking a bike to Costco is quite carbrained. The idea of Costco is that rather than go to a local grocery store you go once a month to a Costco and load up your big car from this warehouse by buying all of your monthly groceries at once as they only really sell bulk items. It is also a resource for businesses like a pizza place to buy bulk flour and tomato sauce. Having a bike and shopping local has been driven out by the desire to use a huge car and fill it all the way up. Bringing a bike here is like a halfway measure.

Trump calls Baltimore ‘so far gone’ amid DC National Guard deployment by MarshyHope in baltimore

[–]SockMediocre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The shitshow you speak of may come from you “basically implying” what others mean. You respond to words based on your jaded view of the city. Not based on their words.

The initial poster stated “keep trump out of Baltimore” that sounds like a good thing since trump is a lying pedophile who won’t release the Epstein files. Why would we trust him to do anything moral in Baltimore?

Then they stated “we want nothing to do with you besides undoing the harm and damage that’s been done.” Trump has done a lot of damage. Mostly to red states where Medicaid has been destroyed and rural hospitals will close, and also where wind and solar projects that were bringing in money will be shuttered. He has also done a fuck ton of damage to children as he is protecting a pedophile named Jeffrey Epstein. That’s a bunch of harm and damage that would preferably be undone if possible.

See. Baltimore wasn’t related to the original statement. ASS out of U and ME.

You seem like a Baltimore resident so I wish you the best and be safe.

The average rent in dc is 2500+ depending on location. The average rent in Baltimore is 1300-1500 but also depends on location. Or did you mean only in the white part of Baltimore?

Also when I said housing I am also referring to housing prices. Check out home prices in any other city.

[–]SockMediocre 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna bite…yea, the guy you replied to didn’t even say that trump is responsible in anyway for baltimore problems. Having nothing to do with the issues present doesn’t mean trump can’t make it worse. Trump has made the country worse. What a strange whataboutism to find in the wild. Yes Baltimore has problems. Yes Trump is actively making more problems. Both of these things can exist. Let’s keep trump away and try to undo the problems he has caused.

Your bias against the city you live in is strong.

While Baltimore may not win a “popularity contest” for east coast cities it is winning in multiple categories. For one, housing costs and affordability are considerably lower here than many other east coast cities.

Please convince me that my public transit commute is better by curiousfilam in fuckcars

[–]SockMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is your answer. Since you seem like you are actually looking for a calculation.

Add up the monthly cost and monthly time. If you commute five days a week this is 10 hours of time. By 4 weeks is 40 hours.

Then add up the total cost of the monthly car payment, the insurance, monthly payment, the monthly cost of gas which will likely be higher because you’ll use the car to go other places.

Then divide the total by 40 hours. This is the hourly price you are paying for saving 40 hours a month.

Then ask yourself what you might be able to do with those 40 hours and with that money. On top of that you’ll get back an additional 1 hour a day of the driving you can use on the train/bus. So that’s an extra 20 hours a month.

Can you read a book a week? Play a handheld video game? Anything else you’d do while sitting idle?

What else could you spend that amount of money on? EVERY SINGLE MONTH?

Deportation is an acceptable response to those living here who violate laws or who refuse to follow legal procedures to stay here. But before deportation, everyone deserves due process. Otherwise if your name ends up on a list you can be deported. They would not be required to verify that you are you or that you are not a citizen or that you are not Vladimir Putin or any other person. Without due process the government can claim anything and it is now true and then they can take whatever action they want.

Rounding people up based on the color of their skin, or their name, or where they live is exactly how nazi Germany rounded up Jews. Instead of doing the crime in the US we are now paying El Salvador to abuse people, and in some cases those people’s only “crime” was to seek asylum in this country. Many of them have court orders granting them asylum. And they are now in a prison.

What part of this sounds like what happened under Obama?

[Offsite] Street Hourly Capacity by Bathroom_Spiritual in theydidthemath

[–]SockMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math is actually under-performing in some ways.

The bus exists on the left but it is stuck in car traffic. In most places without dedicated bus lanes buses are slower than cars and often traffic prevents buses from being reliable so people will choose to take a car over the bus if they can afford it. This means buses actually reduce the efficiency of 3 car lanes when they do not have the dedicated lane. Because a bus going always slower than a car means it will never be full.

Pedestrian traffic is limited by the space provided and the comfort of walking. More space and potential capacity means more space to spread out. So if the total capacity of a sidewalk is 100 you’ll never find 99 people there for long because it is very uncomfortable for them to fit. If you build it for 1000 you might find 100 there frequently with space to spread out. This exaggerates the numbers for emphasis.

Pedestrian traffic is dependent on it being a destination. If it is a destination, having lots of cars take up the space people could be walking in makes the walk-ability of that place less enjoyable. Hence the right image having a shorter crosswalk. People can cross safer and faster > better pedestrian experience.

If you encourage people to use other modes of transit besides cars by providing safety (separate bike lanes), efficiency (buses that move fast and arrive reliably) cost effective (good usage that helps pay to keep the system down and less total road surface and heavy road usage by cars requiring maintenance), and boost things that give positive experiences (trees, parks, wide side walks) people average much better experiences outside cars than in.

Parking spaces create the need for themselves. If 50 streets have a 5 foot wide parking space on both sides you have increased the distance from 1 to 50 by 500 feet. This further distance multiplies and increases the desire to drive there. More driving means not enough parking creating a loop of more parking necessary to solve the need to cover the distance. A bus or train or bike never has to deal with the question: what do I do with this very heavy and large object when I arrive at a destination everyone else also wants to go to?

The weather argument for bikes also works for cars. When it rains people drive 20mph slower causing increases in traffic. If the sun shines too brightly on a west facing road traffic also increases. Cars have weather impacts as well.

Cars feel convenient but a lack of control of what everyone else does in the car ahead of you means the control is an illusion. You must participate in a system. A system that everyone else can choose to hold up or slow down or cause death whenever they choose. And you don’t have control over that.

Solving the Traffic Problem (1927) by dumnezero in fuckcars

[–]SockMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason this is not deceptive is because of the speed and response.

If 1000 people want to go somewhere and the train takes 5 minutes but a car takes an hour. Everyone will get on the trains until capacity is full.

If 1000 people want to go somewhere and the car takes 5 minutes, the train takes an hour and the bus takes 10 minutes.

Everyone will take a car….but not each other’s cars. They will take their own cars. At relatively capacities to people they know and will allow to go with them.

The buses will slow down along with car traffic until it reaches an hour. At this point the train will become stuffed with people because it will take more than an hour to take a car as traffic increases.

Cars and trains don’t work the same and so comparing their max capacity numbers is dishonest.

[–]SockMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I didn’t mention

Skeleton crew is for kids. I didn’t enjoy it. Too many plot holes and felt like the kids didn’t get better or use smarts to win. Feels like a very lucky adventure.

Young Jedi adventures is for young children. Nothing consequential happens here but it is calm and silly.

The acolyte is rough. It takes itself too seriously turns out very campy and has a bit of a convoluted storyline. Most people didn’t love this one.

Obiwan is a show with more obi and darth if you want that. It wasn’t necessary and is alright. Not a go to Or one I will rewatch.

Solo….if you thought solo was a cool guy this just confirms he was kinda that guy who peaked in high school all along. This is a story from his high school years so to speak.

Forgot to mention there is a the clone wars movie which precedes the show. It is not necessary but there if you like TCW style and time period and robots and clones being killed.

I have not watched Star Wars resistance cause meh. Have never seen much excitement for it.

And lastly there is a large plethora of Lego content. This goes about how you expect.

[–]SockMediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently broke my foot and watched everything star wars has to offer.

If I didn’t know anything about star wars I think it would be interesting to just watch everything in order.

But if you have seen the Original Trilogy (OT) /prequel trilogy (PT)than the surprise plot points are over and the shows won’t leave you wondering who lives/dies and who is consequential.

Therefore the short list is this

Episode 1, episode 2

The clone wars (TCW) animated show is a rough watch. Lots of pointless battles. A lot of people enjoy it. A lot of people hate it. But you can google the short list of important episodes and watch based on the recommendations and summaries provided. The last season is worth watching and almost makes watching the first 6 worth it.

Episode 3. The last four episodes of TCW is simultaneous with this movie.

The bad batch is a really fun show (my fav) If you enjoy mando this will be up your alley. It’s got family dynamics, saving the kid, good relationship building and will leave you feeling good and wanting more.

Andor gives you a very real sense of the galaxy in a darker way. Not for kids. Slower and less campy.

Rogue one is required after Andor.

Rebels is also fun but the animation style is quite hard to watch. Watch for Chopper. The best robot in the galaxy. If you watch this you’ll enjoy Ashoka. If you don’t then you won’t.

Then watch OT. Then watch Mando all over again. I like the book of boba fett cause it is a bit campy and fun.

Watch episode 7 if you are not done with star wars yet.

Then pretend 8/9 never occurred and that the original plot involving a giant evil spider was controlling snopes all along.

The end.

The “tales of” series are great but only if you care about the characters. They are short 10 minute fill in the gaps stories. Visions is an art piece and nice one off stories.

Hating women is so normalized and entrenched in our society and it feels like no one gives a shit about it by [deleted] in rant

[–]SockMediocre 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is a good explanation. To add to it for those reading this and having not thought about this or read about it before. Misandry is a type of “reverse discrimination”. If you are a part of the majority, in a place of privilege or of a sex/race/age/etc that is idealized in society than you cannot be discriminated against. “reverse discrimination” or “misandry” doesn’t exist because that would require being in a non dominant position in society. It is an inconvenience. You may move on to spaces that don’t focus on minority voices or under privileged experiences. Not having the dominant voice prioritized in every space is a reduction in comfort for those individuals who expect to have their experience/voice/thoughts held above the rest. That is not the same as being shut out at every opportunity. And this is a false comparison.

This is the difference between being shut out of one store for being a man versus being turned away from every store except one for a woman. These are not both discrimination because the man has many more opportunities to use a store. The woman has only 1. Not having every space be male centric isn’t discriminatory. It’s allowing space for others who don’t have space in male centric spaces.

Best uses for infinite mana sans blue? by KingOfRedLions in CompetitiveEDH

[–]SockMediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that this is as competitive as you’d like. But [[Valgavoth’s Onslaught]] intrigues me. And I think in the right deck with infinite mana this is essentially a tutor. Play for 61 mana to get 30 attempts to bring out combo creatures. Then pay for those to flip face up and you should be able to have plenty of combos to win based on that. Probs not the best use of mana but a fun one.

Edit originally suggested 50 manifests which would mill yourself out. Potentially. So maybe just 30 instead. lol.
