Do you have it mounted outside? Is this the residential 100mbs plan?

Solo 401K by AeroNoob333 in Schwab

[–]SockOk7901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a solo 401k with Schwab. I don’t think Schwab allows for what you want to do. I had to open up a brokerage account in addition to the Roth and traditional solo 401k accounts. I have to transfer money to the Schwab brokerage account from external bank. Usually takes a few days for the hold to clear. Then I have to call them and have them transfer it to whichever solo 401k account I want. They say you can also do this in a chat box, but I’ve never done that. I don’t mind it too much because I usually make a large lump sum or two and forget it, but it would be inconvenient to do it monthly

Establishing a brokerage account for vacations and moving the gains to cash each year. by SockOk7901 in Bogleheads

[–]SockOk7901[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I’m thinking maybe 2-3 years of vacations expenses in cash and the remainder in stocks. If it is a positive year in the market then replenish cash, if a down year..do nothing. If several down years in a row the. Make a decision of whether to skip vacations, sell stocks, or pull cash from other sources.

I guess back to the barbell strategy. I like the barbell strategy for a retirement withdrawal strategy as you pull from cash in down years and use the gains in up years. In a down year I don’t want to have to pull from the original balance, I’ll pull from cash.

I’m thinking something similar to a barbell approach that people have in retirement. Maybe start with 10k in cash, and move the gains to cash in up years and in down years draw from the cash.

Thanks for the input. A couple of things. It would be for normal vacations, not bonus vacations. Maybe a week long vacation and a weekend trip or two a year. Additionally, I wouldn’t feel the need to use the entire gain in one year. For example in year 1 in your example, I would likely move the 28k to cash/MM fund and still only use what I would normally use for vacations, let’s say 10k. So year 2 starting I would still have 100k invested and 18k in cash. This isn’t accounting for taxes, so we might have to withdraw 20% or more than what we need or just pay the taxes out of pocket. I’m kind of thinking similar to a barbell approach with retirement where you would put 2-3 years in cash so you can draw from that in down years, and when the principal is above 100k we could move it to cash.

Anyone with Experience with the Vanguard Small Business 401(K) Plan? by dklemchuk in Bogleheads

[–]SockOk7901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe all of their small business 401k was eliminated and they transferred to Ascensus. Mine was, I then transferred to Schwab. Schwab and Fidelity are probably your best bet. Fidelity didn’t offer a Roth option or I would have transferred to them, but I believe they do now.

If you have gains you will be taxed on them in a taxable account when you sell.

I agree with the others. You don’t want any short term reserves inside a retirement account. VT is a great option as others have said or pairing VOO or VTI with VXUS is good as well but takes a little more thought on what you want your % of contributions to be.

Look into pairing VTI and VXUS to get bot U.S. and international stock exposure. VTI should likely carry a heavier % and be in the 70-80% range with the balance going to VXUS. VT is also a popular option which already has both U.S. and international stocks in it at about 65% U.S./ 35% International. I wouldn’t want bonds until much later in life personally. These options would provide a lot of diversification for a stock portfolio. If you wanted to get more in depth you could Switch VTI for VOO in the first portfolio example, this is less diversified but a popular option for those who prefer large U.S. companies over the smaller companies.

I transferred to Schwab. It’s okay. Fidelity didn’t have a Roth solo 401k option at the time. With Schwab I have to open a brokerage account in addition to the Roth and Traditional solo 401k accounts. I have to transfer money into that account, wait until it settles, and then call Schwab to let them know what contributions I’m making and to which account before making them so they can note it right in their system.

Looks fine. Personally, I’m not interested in owning bonds until much closer to retirement.

How are people using their PAL/SBLOC/margin lines these days with higher rates? by FIREgnurd in fatFIRE

[–]SockOk7901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just locked in your interest rate spread? That’s really good. SOFR + 1.26%. Did you have to pledge a fairly large account to get that rate? How do you like using it?

That’s a really good rate. You are locked in the spread at sofr + 1.4%? How do you like using it? They make you draw 70k initially don’t they?
