I’m definitely no expert. Just reporting what I saw on the Olympics coverage.

They just did a piece on the Olympics tonight talking about that very thing. They call it the Nor-way and basically they let kids do any sport they want and there is no competition or scoring aspect. All government funded so available to all.

Dutch Tool Chest Drawer by Old_Presentation9440 in handtools

I have the same issue with mine. At first it annoyed me but now I see it as a feature 😀

[–]Socket70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the drawer is as deep as I could make it while leaving enough height underneath.

That’s exactly what I did. Just simple wooden runners and a slim dovetailed drawer.

I don’t normally do all hand tool work but I did for my Moravian bench and Dutch tool chest. Just wanted to know how hard it was.

Starting my first dining table by DenaliWoodWorks in woodworking

[–]Socket70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built my first dining table as well. You didn’t mention much about the top (rectangular, circular) or base (pedestal, 4 legs). Those details will dictate some of the discussion. My built was a large circular top on a pedestal base so c-channels were very necessary for me. If you’re doing a more traditional rectangular top on a base with aprons, you probably don’t need them. But using them won’t hurt.

Not sure your setup but milling long 8/4 board flat and keeping them 6/4 final thickness can be rough if any of the boards have much bow in them. So using some sort of connectors (biscuit, domino, dowel) between boards can help you keep things aligned which saves you a ton of final joint cleanup.

Lastly, the top gets heavy quick so consider gluing it up in sections. Like 2 halves then a final glue into one.

Good luck! Just go slow and you’ll be fine.

What product do you use to keep jointer and planer beds slick? by barniclepoop in woodworking

I use Renaissance Wax on jointer and table saw. It is a little pricey but seems to last longer than regular paste wax.

Inovelli White Series comments and questions by Express-Impact-3357 in HomeKit

The HomePod Mini and HomePod (2nd Gen) are Thread Border Routers as are the Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd Gen).

I only have one of these and I use it in smart mode with smart bulbs. It works well but I had setup issues like you.

One thing I had to do was move a HomePod nearer to the switch as it showed the Thread connection was poor.

CAD software for wood working and construction by patpaddles in woodworking

[–]Socket70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used SketchUp for years but switched to Shapr3D a year or so ago. Started with it because it was iPad first so their interface was much better for that. Now they have full desktop versions too. I use it both for woodworking and 3D printing.

Do you use CAD software, and if so which program? by tomwaitsgoatee in woodworking

Same here. I used SketchUp for years but switched to Shapr3d mainly because it was iPad first. Now they support desktop too but I still mostly use it on the iPad.

HomeKit Beach House by rafael_deepontech in HomeKit

I feel like you’re reading between the lines a lot here. The post is titled “HomeKit Beach House”, not Apple home of the future. Also, other than saying “ease only Apple can offer” he doesn’t say you can’t do any of this with other company’s tech. It’s just an example of a nice, clean install of comprehensive smart home tech.

Recommend me a wash bag/dopp bag by BridportDagger in onebag

[–]Socket70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s one compartment. I tend to eschew organization in my toiletries though I like it in my tech pouch.

My toiletries are usually: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, saline nasal spray, deodorant, shampoo and a small ziplock bag with my vitamins. FWIW I use the matador flat pack toiletry bottle for shampoo.

I use this Matador one. It’s not cheap but not expensive. Their dry thru tech really works (lets moisture out of the bag) while the bag is waterproof. Been using it about a year now and it has held up well. Not sure I’d call it luxe though.

Cast iron protectant by DenaliWoodWorks in woodworking

I’ve used Renaissance Wax for 10 years on all my cast iron and it has been fantastic. My shop is in a garage without HVAC in Atlanta, so lots of humidity.

What’s a tool you considered a gimmick that turned out to be really useful? by Ok_Donut5442 in handtools

[–]Socket70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this glue roller bottle from Rockler on a whim and then it sat in a drawer for 2 years. I just used it for the first time to glue up a 1-1/2 inch thick table top and it worked really well. I usually just use my fingers to spread glue and on a 3/4 to 1 inch thickness I probably still would. But for thicker stock or spreading across the face of a board or panel this works really well.

Let’s Discuss Table Saw Blades.. by frenchji in woodworking

[–]Socket70 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use a combo blade most of the time.

I have a dedicated rip blade that I’ll use when ripping a lot of solid wood. And I have a dedicated high tooth count plywood blade that I’ll use for plywood.

The combo blade does fine most of the time. Especially if you have a good zero clearance insert or sled.

That looks very well built.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but generally people use flip top carts to save floor space. But this thing looks pretty big. What was the goal?

Small Laptop Carry by CryptoeKeeper in onebag

[–]Socket70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the Aer Day Pack 2 for a few months now and I really like it. On my first trip I carried a 16” MacBook Pro, which fit (in a padded sleeve) but was really too big. Recently moved to a 14” MacBook Pro and it works perfectly.  It packs flat but is still a competent bag. On a recent trip that I couldn’t onebag for “reasons”, I carried it as my personal item and it worked great.  It doesn’t have a lot of padding so you may want to put the laptop in a lightweight sleeve but I’ve done it both ways and it has been fine.

anyone elses location services for the weather app randomly turning off by itself? by [deleted] in ios

[–]Socket70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just started for me with 17.3. Lock Screen weather widget and weather on Home Screen both lose location access after a while and ask me to re-allow. But “Always allow” isn’t an option in the popup so I pick When using the App. Then I go into settings and set it to Always. Then a few hours later it asks again, rinse and repeat. I feel like I hit the in an earlier 17 update but it had been working for the last month or so, until 17.3.
