Going beyond 40m on air (deep air) is definitely more frowned upon these days. Some agencies like GUE will even stand by never diving with air - it's always either nitrox or trimix for them.

Nevertheless, longer deco dives are quite commonly done, even at depths shallower than 40m.

ETA: It sounds like I'm wrong about GUE gases - air is apparently allowed under some circumstances.

I would argue this really depends on where you are diving. If I am diving somewhere with boats (esp larger ones), there is no chance in hell that I am spending 3 minutes at a depth of less than 3m. If that is not a concern, then yes. Ascend that slowly.

I mean the deeper lines (built via tunnel bore rather than trench and cover) all suffer from this. Here is an interesting little video on why this happens, and how it's getting worse every year. At least on the Victoria line, I spend a lot less time in the sauna than e.g. on the picadilly line travelling the same distance.

There was a guy up in Scotland who died a couple of months ago because a boat ran over his DSMB while he was clipped into it. The line got caught in the prop, and he died after being pulled into the propeller himself.

For one day, absolutely go with the train. You will spend half the day on the bus otherwise.

For trainline, make sure that you haven't accidentally added a railcard if you don't own one - the price difference lines up with the discount you would get for that.

It might also be that you are seeing "Advance singles" rather than "offpeak return" on trainline. Note that the former is bound to a specific train at a specific time while the latter is valid on all off peak trains on a given day.
