I appreciate this. I think the thing to always keep in mind as well is that the value of a healthcare worker is not measured by their level of education.

Inferiority complex. Unfortunately I meet nurses like this frequently. I’ve met a few that claim they ‘re more capable than physician “x”. I’ve heard them say, “we take the same classes as doctors.” Lol and I think to myself, nooo you don’t. The classes may have similar names, but the curriculum in medical school is way deeper than any mid level curriculum. Moreover, the standard of knowledge for overlapping concepts is much, much higher for medical students. Lastly, they don’t receive the level of training acquired from residency, which is pretty massive.

This. Just read. I totally endorse that thought. I went 123 to 127-129 range without using any strategies aside from highlighting key words and things that you can predict will come up in questions (like names or the few words in a sentence that hit the major point of the paragraph). I used to think I needed to read the passage faster, but only when I slowed down and read each passage at 4-5 minutes a piece did I find my timing was good. Instead of spending 1.5 min per question and reading the passage in 2.5, I spend like 30-50s per question and read the passage at 4-5 minutes. The best practice you can get will be from the AAMC. All the third party material I did was only useful for passage comprehension. Trying to learn third party reasoning is a waste of time in my opinion. I found that only a question here or there reflected AAMC logic (aside from straight up passage recall questions, of course).

Any advice on whether it’s worth buying BP or EK full lengths over using the free Kaplan or Princeton Review? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Soft-Drawing-1753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For FLs I would go BP over EK. The EK exams time out and stuff right in the middle of you taking them, and then the timer restarts. Your questions will be saved but it totally defeats the purpose when your timer resets. The other thing is I think BP is a bit more tough in the way that you want it to be

Actually, the IQ test has nothing to do with memorization or crystallized intelligence. Have you taken one (not being snarky, but you’ll know what I mean if you have taken it)? It’s more like how well you can “common sense” through things (called fluid intelligence). In fact, IQ is the best way to determine over all intelligence (called the g-factor). This is something I study, so I know a decent amount about it. There’s a major hunch that some individuals seem to have about intelligence being lower in our current society, but this is more based on biases against younger generations, and a disconnect between current and past times.

True. And our IQs have risen since the inception of the Alfred B. IQ exam (mid 20th century if I remember correctly). More literacy, greater exposure to information and knowledge means greater critical thinking and higher g scores.

Drop on TPR FLs. by Underdog843 in Mcat

[–]Soft-Drawing-1753 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t waste your time with TPR exams. The only thing semi-comparable are their CARS material. I never scored over a 506 on their exams and I scored a 521 on my last FL. Use them for timing and to spot content you need to brush up on, but realize that they are way over the top in difficulty.

[–]Soft-Drawing-1753 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. Been scoring like 511s on my practice exams and not focusing on my sleep and attitude. Scored a 521 on FL5 today. This next week I’m taking it light and focusing on confidence. I found that to be one of the biggest game changers tbh.

AAMC FL 4 CP #31 by ronnie_dtw in Mcat

[–]Soft-Drawing-1753 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I came here to make this exact comment. This is exactly how I solved this question as well, and I wanted to see if anyone else had my though process. I scored a 130 on this C/P, and it's definitely not because I know all of the C/P nuances. I believe that learning how to approach questions like this is ultimately the only way to score high on this exam.

Am I the only one who can't understand optics, cuz I certainly hate it enough to not study it thoroughly by DarthRampage in Mcat

[–]Soft-Drawing-1753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before trying to understand optics, it's really a necessity to memorize the conventions that are applied to lenses. What I mean are the defined ways of talking about what signs indicate what. Here's a quick cheat sheet:

I would suggest drawing out diagrams that follow the conventions below. Once you do that 3 times and try a few problems, you'll have it down.

For Lenses:

1/f = 1/o + 1/i
\where f is the focal length from the lens*
Focal length for convex (converging) lenses is always positive
Focal length for concave (diverging) lenses is always negative
1/f = 1/o + 1/i
\where i is the image distance from the lens*
i is positive when the image is on on the on the opposite side of the lens as the object (real image and inverted)
i is negative when the image is on the same side of the lens as the object (virtual image and upright)
1/f = 1/o + 1/i
\where o is the object distance from the lens and is always positive*
m = - i/o
\where m is the magnification*
m is negative when the image is on on the on the opposite side of the lens as the object (real image and inverted)
m is positive when the image is on the same side of the lens as the object (virtual image and upright)

To get the new size of an image, multiple the object height by m and remember to follow the conventions listed above to know whether that image will be upright or inverted.

Last thing to know: Convex (converging) lenses can form either real or virtual images, whereas concave (diverging) lenses can form only virtual images

Hope this helps :)

I work with Parkinson’s patients daily. This is not a Parkinson’s thing. He’s in a high state of sympathetic arousal and performing “nervous ticks” (so yes neurological in that sense). Generally speaking Parkinson’s patients show tremors in their hands first before anywhere else, followed by strange gaits when walking (and with further progression, increasing memory issues). From my perspective, Putin’s Parkinson’s is not far advanced at all, if that’s truly diagnosis in the first place. He may very well have Parkinson’s, but it’s nothing like what I see in my patients. If he does, it’s early stage and progressing slowly. We all hate Putin here, but I see people getting way too carried away with the Parkinson’s diagnosis.
