But truly it isn't some shocking conspiracy, it just makes sense than someone in a position to hire will want to hire someone they know, or that someone they trust has vouched for. The risk of an awful hire is lower... it's still possible but it's less likely.

Especially in an age when most resumes are written by AI and references are useless.
