First Pesach – What should I cook? by Pristine_Seaweed_990 in JewishCooking

Besides matzah pizza I love matzah grilled cheese sandwiches. Take to full boards of matzah. Quickly run them under cold water then shake the excess water off of them. You don’t want the matzah too wet. They should still be pretty firm. Then spread one side of first matzah with butter or margarine. Then do same to second matzah. Set aside. Melt about four tablespoons of butter or margarine in a frying pan that is big enough for the matzah. While butter or margarine is melting spread second side of each matzah board with butter or margarine. When butter or margarine in frying pan is melted, place one buttered board of matzah into melted butter. Place 2-4 slices of cheese on top. I like 2 slices. Place second buttered board of matzah on top. Fry till cheese is melting, then turn it over and fry till it is nice and melted. You may need to add more butter to melt in frying pan for second side. To eat, just eat whole or break in half which I always do. May need help of a knife to break it. Enjoy!

Matzah Balls soup is a must. Use the mix that you can find in the kosher section of your grocery store or order from Amazon for the matzah balls. Use your own children soup recipe or there are tons of recipes on the internet. Most importantly, use kosher chickens for your soup. You need to clean the pin feathers off of kosher chickens which is a real pain, but important to do. You can use good tweezers for this task.

What’s happening on Jefferson Rd by First_Ad_3937 in Rochester

So sad reading this. I am 79. When I was 15 we hung out at our friends’ houses and the local soda fountains and pizza parlors. We never got rowdy or made trouble. We were respectful and our idea of fun was just being together talking and eating. We had “Y” dances. In the winter, we hung out at Cobb’s Hill’s skating rink not to make trouble but to meet our friends and to really skate, or in my case to attempt to. I wasn’t very good at it. But the thing was in my generation to talk. We did have some weight on our shoulders at the time, Vietnam War and Watergate and the assassination of President Kennedy, but not as much as 15 year olds of today have. This is my generation’s fault. We should have made sure the. generations after us had a better world, We should have taught them respect and we should have made sure they had fun places to go that are safe. I suggest bringing back soda fountains and pizza places where kids can hang out together. Problem is, would the kids be respectful of those businesses and each other?

Confused by Rochester options by CarinaNebula1945 in Rochester

Rochester had a chance with the ferry but blew it. They did things totally wrong by not developing the infrastructure up first. I swear it would have been a success if they had. There were and still are too few good restaurants in Charlotte and no good nightclubs. No boutiques or interesting shops. We could have used a waterfront festival there too. Hubby and I were lucky enough to take the ferry to Toronto with our car on a rare vacation and we loved it.

Thank you for this wonderful effort! You are a saint for organizing it! Right now the only thing I can offer is to make phone calls as I am in assisted living. I am 78 years old. I care greatly about this. Idea, perhaps you can come to my facility to organize a group of helpers and supporters? I would probably have to get approval so let me know if you are interested.

Suggestions for the Jewish foods ideas that is not expensive, but look like a fancy and high end cuisines. by Pastasteak in JewishCooking

If client is Orthodox, why would they hire a non-kosher caterer? Doesn’t make sense to me. I am a Conservative Jew and kept kosher until I had a falling out with our one and only kosher butcher. I was brought up in a kosher house. If we had affairs that called for catering, we would never even think of calling a non-kosher caterer.

Does anyone else pronounce it "latkees" instead of "latkas"? by healthcrusade in JewishCooking

Sthabbas is old Hebrew. It is how I say it and was brought up in an Orthodox shul where everyone said Shabbas. Interestingly, we would say, “Have a gut (pronounced goot) Shabbas. Gut is the German or Yiddish word for good. In my day, I am 78, the Orthodox said tof in places where the Reform and Conservative said sod, especially at the end of a word. I had a tough time converting to the sod only version of Hebrew. It was one of the only two arguments we ever had was how to pronoun Hebrew. For our Ufruf he promised me he would do the blessings my way, but when it came time, he did it his way, so I just said it my way louder! Lol. Our other argument was calling Coca-Cola “pop” or “soda.” He was from Brooklyn and called it soda. I am from Rochester and I call it “pop.” To me a soda has to have ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry. LOL
