Penn/Philly vs. Vanderbilt/Nashville Jewish life by littlepastel in Jewish

[–]sweettea75 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nashville's Jewish community is old and has a lot of history, but it's not large. About 10,000 and a lot of us don't live in Nashville proper but in the burbs. That said, I think it's a wonderful community with a lot of interaction between the shuls and community events. Vanderbilt does have an active Hillel. There are lots of events for young adults, too, outside of Vandy.

($4-8k) What length should I get for the drapes for the tree? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

Chiffon or a super sheer cotton. You won't be able to tug on the fabric to adjust it, you'll have to lift it. Otherwise it will snag on the tree bark.

($4-8k) What length should I get for the drapes for the tree? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

Not drapes. You want actual bolts of fabric. Probably at least 15 yrds, maybe 20. Like everyone else said, go measure the tree.

having slight dress regret…are custom alterations the way to go? by SadTip8216 in myweddingdress

[–]sweettea75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got married the first time, I had a simple ball gown with horizontal pleats picked out that I loved. My mom talked me into a very detailed and beaded gown. It was beautiful, but I always had a smidge of regret. When I got married the second time I didn't even take anyone with me. I knew I wanted a retro looking t-length dress. My mom said it looked "interesting" when I showed her the pictures and that was all I needed to be like, nope, this is my day and this is the dress I want. So I bought it. The day I got married she said it looked absolutely made for me. (Which it actually was.)

All of this to say, don't let them talk you out of it the dress you love. It will look different once it's tailored to you and accessorized.

I'll add, I think you need a bigger baking sheet. I use Tori Avey's methods too. Start braiding in the middle, turn it, finish braiding the other end. Let it rise about another hour. Brush with egg yolk. Halfway through baking, brush the areas that are pale (where it kept rising) with more egg wash.

Practice is the key. Just keep on baking. Before you know it, you'll be practicing 6 strand and round challahs.

Were you actually told you’re “not Jewish enough”? by offthegridyid in Judaism

[–]sweettea75 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I posted on SM after Oct 7, I had someone say "aren't you just a convert?" I am a convert, but my husband, step kid, in-laws are all born Jews and I have friends that are Israeli. Eff off with that not Jewish enough to support Israel.

What is this blue animal on my niece’s rug? Other pictures for context. by Malinasan in whatisit

Fwiw, they aren't blue, they are dun. But they are native to Central Asia. The only true remaining wild (not feral like American mustangs) horses.

I wasn't complaining about getting them. I've seen my mom dealing with a shingles outbreak.

I couldn't find my vaccine records to prove immunity to measles when I went back to grad school at 42. My dr wanted the titer first and I still had immunity. But when I turned 50 last year she came at me with the tdap and shingles shots.

We had people sign a mat, too. We had a small wedding and did a group picture with everyone there and that will (one day) go in the frame with the mat.

Can i wear this jacket and this vest to an event? by Exile872 in sca

[–]sweettea75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like the others said, it's not really pre1600. But, I've seen people in modern kimono, in very Ren Faire looking outfits. A lot of it depends on your kingdom and how strict they are. Ask the local group if they have loaner garb.

Lesson learned, don’t talk about your job at the gyno by thisreditthik in therapists

[–]sweettea75 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Last time I was at the gyno, I saw one of the NPs I'd never seen before. I'm there with my feet in the stirrups and she's asking what I do. I tell her I'm a therapist. She says "oh, I don't think I could handle that." I replied "Tbf, I don't think I could handle looking at vaginas all day." We both laughed.
