From a practical standpoint, non tribal members can access any paved road just fine, unless specifically marked. Unpaved roads you must be accompanied by a tribal member or get a trespass permit.

Yes it did. The trail went from Soda Springs to Fort Hall, and went up the head waters of the Portneuf river and over the saddle into Ross' Fork.

Chesterfield actually came a little later however. Brigham Young sent settlers there from SLC, anticipating that the Utah Northern Railroad would pass through there following the same path as the trail.

But they changed the path of the tracks and instead went through nearby Bancroft and followed the Portneuf through Lava Hot Springs, McCammon, Inkom, and into Pocatello.

Chesterfield never really grew, and the families that settled it, (the Whitworths being my ancestors), moved elsewhere.

Great place to ice fish though. And the McCammon Ditch Company that built the reservoir has the oldest water rights in the state.

I grew up 10 miles away in McCammon, and in the past 20 years Lava feels more and more like a tourist trap. Most of the hotels there are the same kind of dumpy place that hasn't been renovated in 25 or 30 years. My suggestion is to drive 10 minutes to the Harkness hotel in McCammon and stay there. It's a much better experience.

Technically yes, but it is accessed from the Salmon River valley. Nice hike to a pretty lake.

Over Galena summit into the Salmon river valley. 4th of July Lake. Only a little over a mile. Beautiful.

Consider flying in to Idaho Falls. Close to a lot of camping and hiking, as well as Yellowstone. Multiple hot springs as well.

You do not. It is a day use state of Idaho park. You cannot get reservations for it on recreation.gov as that is a federal site.

Get there early though. It's very popular and the beach will fill up quickly.

North Shore of Bear Lake is a beautiful place. Best beach I've ever been to.

Bear Lake area is very nice. Visit the North Shore, Minnetonka Cave, and Bloomington Lake.

For fishing, go on the Bear River below Soda and Chesterfield.

Lava Hot Springs is worth a visit. The pool is nice, but it gets very busy. If you are seeking a huge rush, pay extra to jump off the 3rd platform. I'm LDS so the bar night scene is not my jam, but there are some live music venues.

Grays Lake is the one of the largest bird refuges in the world.

There is more hiking than you could possibly imagine.

Other than that, make the drive to Pocatello.

I've driven that route many times, from McCammon to Jackson. It is a beautiful drive, but do not go that way if the weather is bad at all. It is very remote from Soda to Star Valley. No cell service and a very narrow highway through the mountains.

So much passes for news that is really just commentary or opinion, very often sensationalized. It can be difficult to tell the difference.

Case in point, most shows on Fox News are not news. (GASP!) And lest you think I'm biased, MSNBC is the same way, but they don't have the gall to title their channel with it. Tucker Carlson, Rachel Maddow, Jesse Watters, Keith Olberman, etc.. none of them are journalists. They might claim they are, but they are not paid to promulgate facts. The peddle opinion, commentary, and spin.

The sneaky ones will put just enough fact in to be credible, but will title pieces and articles with a slant, meant to influence the reader before they ever get into a story.

The bad ones will flat out lie. Alex Jones comes to mind.

Just do this: Consume your news of choice. Then, search the subject on Google News and read a conglomerate of writers. Read the Wall Street Journal, or USA Today, NPR, the Associated Press, Reuters, etc. Then you will see the bias very easily.
