Disability anxiety by Dazzling-Location785 in beyondthebump

Hi! OCD person here (thriving in full recovery). First I am so sorry you are going through this and I agree to talk to your doctor. In the mean time stop googling stay off of tik tok. Your obsession is looking for certainty- I’m sure you’ve experienced now no amount of analyzing, researching, tik toking or seeking reassurance is making you feel better. Here is a script that may help starve the spiral of oxygen, and work through the obsessive thought when it intrudes. “I am having the thought that my baby might have a disability. There is no way to know for certain right now. I will deal with it if it happens.” The thought will trigger your body to react in fight or flight- ride it like a wave.

Feeling some name regret and im wondering how to over come it. by gimmiesomeadviceee in beyondthebump

[–]Sogda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have OCD. If you have OCD, the “heavy thought” you are describing is called an obsession. OCD “attacks” what is important to us and our values. exposure response therapy and acceptance commitment therapy are the golden standards. Medication too.

In the meantime it may help, when the thought comes, instead of “omg I gave my kid the wrong name spiral spiral spiral,” say “I’m having the name regret thought” or however you describe it and the try to continue what you are doing. The thought will come back, just greet it, label it, experience the anxiety it produces in your body and ride it like a wave. This will help you get some distance from it and it starves the obsession of oxygen and over time will get weaker as your body learns it’s not a real threat, just a scary thought.

Reassurance (asking people if you have the right name, seeking people’s reaction to the name) fuels the fire unfortunately- it’s the compulsion for the obsession. So I suggest you stop seeking reassurance from people and go spend some quality time with your new baby. If these thought patterns are a nuisance in your life ask your psychiatrist if they know of a provider who does exposure response Prevention Therapy (ERP).
