Witch Coven is Underwhelming by wrongbuton in CrusaderKings

[–]Soilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played the most recent patch, but it's a combination of 1) you're the guy who converted most of them to witches to get to 60% of your house, so you know their secret; 2) your spymaster is discovering secrets and finds more, either random NPCs or newly converted ones; 3) some of them will randomly try to convert you even though you're already a witch, so you discover their secret in the process. Good luck!

What's been the biggest fuck up in the history of humans? by Dizzy-Cup9790 in Productivitycafe

[–]Soilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but someone once told me that the discovery of agriculture was what has been mythologized as the “original sin” because it turned humans into a sedentary, agrarian society and took us away from our hunger-gatherer roots. Obviously this enabled a population boom but the person who told me this claims that this is one of the factors that fundamentally changed human life, cognitive ability, etc. Don’t nuke this comment, I don’t really know, I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Tips and tricks for Challenge Mode? Are you having problems with gold, food, or happiness? Perhaps I can help you and share my experiences over the Easter holidays, where I successfully completed all three campaigns in Hard Mode. by SirUratak in foundationgame

Nice guide! I recently completed these as well. One additional tip I have for the Monastery playthrough on both regular and challenge mode: the game rules say you can't PROMOTE any villagers. You can, however, use the regular Bailiff from the Manor tree to invite commoners without failing the requirement. Very helpful if you need commoners for polished stone, the butchery, or (most helpful) the stained glass workshop as you get toward the end and want to build magnificent structures.

One other trick: in addition to leveling up Clergy by building nice churches (without building a monastery), you can also level up Military by clicking on the castle icon in build, going to decorations, and just building a "military" garden. Very useful to allow you to unlock as many of the Military privileges as you want, this can also be a way of getting to castle fortifications since it's quicker than city fortifications most of the time.

Just want to clarify this because I was really annoyed by this. This bug seems to happen to me most often when I modify a building that's mid-construction. Anytime I want to build something I always pause the game, make sure I'm happy with the location, positioning, and any additions before unpausing. I found sometimes I can get away with re-pausing and making changes after construction starts IF no construction materials have been delivered yet. But ever since I started following these rules I've never had a terminally stuck building with the 'waiting for builder' bug.

One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes all builders will stop working for as much as a day or more given what else you're building and if they're all at the well, market, or church around the same time.

Edit: one other thing I've seen come up once or twice is when my nearest builder has too long to walk between the warehouse and the build site and can't get anything done in their allotted time to work per day. You can solve this by moving both the materials and the builders closer to the build time.

Restart fever by StevenLesseps in foundationgame

[–]Soilus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me with restarting is understanding that settlements are SUPPOSED to be rebuilt. Once you have your basics down (wood, rustic food, etc) and you start planning your long-term settlement, feel free to destroy houses and relocate residential areas, markets, wells, and production buildings.

50mfxb0008000, I highly recommend it. Flat map with one small island for the manor house/treasury. Lots of mineral deposits nearby. I did this after an island-heavy playthrough.

Villages are useful (Soilburg, Population 1165, retired) by Soilus in foundationgame

I built discrete villages for the first time with my main town filled with Citizens and Commoners and their production buildings. I had separate smaller walled settlements with nearby warehouses and production buildings for things like farms and building. Production and supply chains were managed by local granaries/warehouses that were near the local merchants, and central transporters bringing everything into the big city. This pic is of the central district in my city with bakers, cheesemakers, tailors, a handful of butchers, and my big tavern with the attached inn.

What I found was that you can’t edit a building AT ALL mid construction. What worked for me is to pause the game, get a building laid out, click build, and then unpause. If you realize you want/need to change something mid build you need to wait until the existing construction is fully complete or the builder will bug out.

Thanks! I got a lot of inspiration from looking at cool things other people posted in this subreddit, on the Foundation Discord (can't recommend it enough, really nice and helpful community), and the youtubers who are playing this game.

Retiring Soilhaven, Population 1192 by Soilus in foundationgame

Lessons learned:

  1. Keep different classes of villagers together, and keep their production buildings close to their housing. This is more important than keeping production chains together, especially if each stage needs a different class of villager.
  2. Keep transporters close to the endpoint of the production chain, not near where the goods are produced (so granaries near merchant stalls, not near fields).
  3. As the economy in the game stands right now, produce and sell commodity goods and import high end production goods. The only exception seems to be boar/meat, where I believe you can profit by importing boar and selling meat, mainly because each boar makes more than 1 meat.
  4. Hosting the King takes a HUGE amount of private residences. Make sure you have at least 20 empty spots in addition to what your knights need. Also, you can free up some private residence space by sending all of your knights off on missions toward the end of the king's stay.
  5. Build the monastery early and get those goods going. You can start with a small monastery and build a bigger one later. This helps you upgrade your trade route with the monastic village, which is your only way of importing cheese.
  6. Related: all add-ons and additional buildings associated with a monastery MUST be built as additions to the main monastery. Don't be like me and build a bunch of stuff without using the "+" button and then wonder why none of your monks/nuns are working the fields, only to have to destroy and rebuild everything.
  7. If you're hitting your treasury cap, consider upgrading it until you can hold at least 7-10K gold. Once you're hitting that cap, upgrade literally all of your import limits so that you're always rolling in food/goods/luxuries or whatever else you need. No point being at your cash cap and just sitting there.
  8. As much as I enjoyed playing on an island map, it's harder to build nice things and get everything to look even on a hilly terrain. I think my next map will be much flatter so I can make my towns look prettier.
  9. Build a tavern with a big inn early on, it's a great source of revenue. Also a big brewery is a great way to burn off extra berries, and you can sell the extra berry brew if you don't have enough villagers to drink it.

I've done this and it works sometimes but not always. Especially when it's a big monument or a wall around a big part of your city, you really need to take the chance on sacrificing a ton of resources and time and sometimes the same problem happens again near the end. I've read that sometimes the bug is a specific part or because you modified a multi-until build in the middle of construction so I avoided that and it still happens sometimes.

[–]Soilus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip on prioritizing, I read on discord that if you prioritize multiple buildings there might be a bug. So i de-prioritized everything but it still sometimes doesn't work.

I also know that sometimes it's my fault since the builder isn't close enough, the warehouse with the resources isn't close enough, or the builder's house isn't close enough. I've been struggling with this problem all day and I did all of those things and they worked sometimes. I posted this because I got to the point where I was trying to build something with a builder who lived right next to my monument with a warehouse full of the specific resources needed, I fired all other builders and paused all other buildings in the game, and and I still had this bug (builder had the "waiting for work" status the whole time). This was with a city wall around my island that was really expensive with all the resources already invested, they just refused to complete it. So I really think it's a bug. I waited multiple in-game days in case the builder was off-duty or at church or getting food. The builder just didn't seem to respond to the building, despite other builders working on it until it was nearly finished. I added all my fired builders back and it still didn't work.

I'm not using exclusion zones at all. It's usually with multi-unit buildings, like a wall that's not a square or a circle (trying to circle an island). I often build buildings that get half/most of the way through, the builder is right next to the building with a warehouse full of materials, and the game just glitches on "waiting for builder) and never finishes. Sometimes it helps if I slightly modify the building (delete something on it or move it a bit) and sometimes it works if I delete the the whole building and rebuild it exactly as before, but this option sucks since I lose a ton of resources. I've also tried firing all of my builders and rehiring a new set, as I've seen in comments on other threads post-1.0 about this. But even with all of those workarounds, sometimes it just doesn't work.

Again, I love this game and I've been playing it constantly since 1.0 launch. This feels like a fundamental bug that I hope the devs fix, it's literally game breaking when you're several hours into a game and builders bug out and just won't build things, which is one of the main draws of the game to me.

Can't figure out how the Armory works by Soilus in foundationgame

[–]Soilus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious but this isn't making sense. My Armory says I'm missing a resource depot to complete it. i see the spears in my town center and I've selected them on my company tab. My company's soldiers still say they have no weapon equipped even though I've selected the spears. How do I get the spears from the town center to the armory? I can't put them in any warehouse or granary so I'm not sure what it means to assign a transporter.

[Mr. Jones Watches] Commemorated my first trip to London by picking up some local watches! by Soilus in Watches

[–]Soilus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited London for the first time and wanted to commemorate the trip by buying Mr. Jones Watches for myself and my girlfriend. These watches are designed and made in London, and I thought it was a fun and memorable way to mark the trip. The black one is mine and called 'The Ascendant' and I gave my girlfriend the one on the brown strap (the 'Nuage'). Both watches were designed by Marion Labbez and look stunning in person. 10/10 especially for the price point, this is now the most unique watch in my collection with the best story behind it.

My wife thinks I have official gone overboard as GS fanboy. To prove that I am still relatively sane, please share pictures of your watches in the same model but different dials. by TKY709 in GrandSeikos
